Preview Changes v Saints

I think it will be just as hard for the older guys to back up physically week after week, especially with reduced conditioning staff etc., a team like Geelong with a lot of key players 30+ will need a lot of luck. Whoever is standing at the end of the year will have done well
If our depth is as strong as some think it is we should thrive. I suspect we’ve probably overrated our depth a little on here, me included.

After the preseason hype around English I’m really hoping he can show something against the saints. I didn’t expect him to beat Grundy but he was absolutely pantsed in that game - to an extent I haven’t seen for some time. Have to play Libba if he is fit and our mid field needs to show some fight or a 17 round season may still be too long.

Cautiously hopeful but I was frankly shocked by how bad round 1 was. Just hope it was an aberration. Libba and Lipinski into the middle please and I would select Lin Jong as well if he is fit. He’s not the most skilful and I understand why some on here don’t rate him but he is courageous at least and we bloody lacked that v the pies...

Jong is also our quickest player (unless Richards, Cavarra or Vandermeer have passed him) which would be nice to have on a wing. More likely than not that Jong doesn't establish himself, but I'd like to see him get a go

Is he?! That’s baffling if so. I don’t think I can ever recall him running away from anyone. What about JJ? Crozier? Richards? Dale?
A few years ago he was rated our fastest over 20m. Haven't seen any ratings since then but he's definitely up there with the quickest.

His best games showed real break away speed. With so many injuries since then he may not have it anymore but if he does I’d select him for sure based on round 1 and everything we lacked.

Richards would be closest I'd think. Jong never even gets the chance to show it so who knows how quick he is these days

His hamstring issues will have impacted that breakaway explosiveness but he should still be up there for speed with some room to use it.

Cavarra is a weird one. Tested great for speed in his draft year but hes never looked lightening quick even when he was at Willi. I don’t get how someone can be that quick and yet get nowhere near it.

Don’t ask me how it works but people can be fast as hell on the test track but it doesn’t necessarily translate into being quick on the footy field.

My other sporting team, Everton, had a guy named Phil Jagielka who would always be rated as ‘quickest player at the club’ by his peers. I could never understand it. He simply wasn’t fast on a football pitch.

His contested marking would be in the top 5 or 6 at the club as well I reckon.

If Jong can stay sound and is used the right way he could add another dimension. This year would have to be his last chance. As long as he didn't try to bite off too much with his kicking, could be effective.
Last chance for him so roll the dice and see if he can make a fist of it.

It’s hard to hide poor kicking on the wing though.

Hunter is an atrocious kick, but somehow managed a disposal efficiency over 70%. Leave the high risk kicks to blokes like Daniel, JJ and Bont, and he should be fine.

Not a fan of having two shit kicks on the wings, but I do think Jong has a lot to offer in other aspects of his game

There are quite a few worse kicks at the club.
Jong’s main problem has always been his lack of composure and vision with the footy in hand.

When I coached soccer, one skill we tried to instil in kids - and one you treasured if they had it naturally - was to be comfortable in possession of the ball. Of course you don’t want kids to be ball hogs and selfish players but equally you don’t want kids who are scared of possession and always pass it off as soon as they get it.

I get that feeling with Jong. He wants to dish it off to the first RW&B jumper that comes into his field of vision, even if he's only a metre away. Just compare that to a player like Bont who doesn't want to dispose of the ball until he can see how it will turn into a constructive sequence of play. If we could get that skill into Jong he'd be an automatic selection every week.

I like Jong but at this level that should have been ironed out by now. He’s got some incredible attributes like his marking, size/power and speed but where do you put him two years on from when he last properly played? He could do a job forward causing mayhem I reckon. Could provide as much pressure as any small forward we have but happens to be mid sized.

Jong has quite good marking ability , so I would treat him like an Old School Ruckman. And make a team rule that there is at least one person going by for the handball receive.
Apart from that Jong will need to work within his limits and not get too cute, if he is going to make a fist of it!

I remember that the club could once boast six or seven players who could sprint 20m in under 3s.

One was Peter Street.

One who was over was Adam Cooney.

We should build our whole team and gameplan around Jong like the 90's Bulls team did with Jordan.

With the issues Jong has had, I think it's overly ambitious to think that his body will consistently stand up to the rigors of a midfield role.

I think his attributes could make him a useful half forward, who either gives off immediately to an open target or goes long to the deep contest.

His strong marking, sharp burst of pace, big body and solid defensive, tackling game would all be good assets.

There is another Jong with lightning speed so much speed a nutty president refers to him as rocket man.

The main thing I want to see with our Rnd 2 team is the absence of speculative project selections., and a genuine attempt to pick our strongest 22.

If we just pick the best performed players who are definitely fit, we will give ourselves a chance in any match.

The confidence of so many supporters was riding high going into the season, but took a dent straight away with the debacle of our first team selection, the match result was sadly fairly predictable from that point.

I don't want to see Gardner or Cavarra named in the side. Sweet should be the only debutant under consideration due to our thin ruck stocks.
And if we have enough fit key position players to avoid selecting Young after his Rnd 1 performance, we should do so. If Naughton isn't right, don't risk it and leave him out. if Libba, McLean, Wallis, Dickson and Bailey Williams are fully fit they should all be locked in. We needs guys who want the footy regardless of the external circumstances.

Some positive sports psychology treatment for English before the match wouldn't go astray but perhaps selecting Sweet as a 2nd ruck option might have the same effect.

I had just got through 2 and a half months of intense therapy trying to block out all memory of Gardner in Round 1 and you go and put me right back in it!!!!!!
Never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever again.

I like the idea of Jong to get a crack. Not sure about the fastest tag though as thought Dicko had held this crown for a while.
Don’t see a matchup for Gardner really although unlike many, I thought he did a couple of nice things amongst some awful stuff. Was way better than Naughts and Bruce . Neither gave a yelp.
Lipinski and Richards back for Dale and Hunter. Need Richards to roam whereBilling roams as he causes us headaches each meeting.
