Preview Changes v Saints

I watched the Saints Norf game R1. Saints dominated the first half, but Norf inched their way back, almost solely on Ben Cunningtons gruntwork and sheer force of will.

As I was watching Cunnington go about his work, I thought jeez we miss Libba.

I thought speed was supposed to be one of Gardner's few strong points.

Too slow to dispose well or get to a ground ball, fast enough to consistency impact the high ball. Might've just been that he was the slowest of our defenders

I'm interested to see Jong back in the team. I think his strengths (toughness, pace, marking) are better suited to the team we have now than the team we had when he was last in the seniors. The jury is still out but i think he can have a big impact if he plays to his strengths

Where would you play him? I’m assuming he’s coming in on the wing as that was the preseason chat.

I like Jong but I’ll be hiding behind the sofa every time he disposes of the ball out on the wing.
To be fair it can’t be a great deal worse than Hunter’s. I’m happy to give him a chance in one of the wing spots while it’s pretty open. For all his weaknesses, he has some pretty bloody good strengths that could be a real point of difference in our team.

Yeah true. If we take Hunter as the role wings are supposed to play in our team, then he really just needs to be present as the "get out" option when we have nothing else on. A lot of Hunter's disposals aren't precise because he's treated as the get out option and just needs to bang it forward. Jong can do that.
And if he can get on the end of something in the forward line, i actually don't mind his goal kicking.

I think half of jongs trouble is he second guesses himself to often looks for a third or fourth option and chooses the first option after it is no longer an option. Think once he gets confidence in himself and backs himself in then alot will click together

Looking forward to some epic melts when the team is named tonight, even if it's only a squad of 25.

Don't let me down, folks.
I’m just hoping Bevo has come to his senses and just plays our best team. The fact that he has flagged considerably changes is positive. As long as all of Cavarra, Gardner & Young are all out of the team and replaced by a combination of Libba, McLean, Lippa, Richards etc. then most will be content. Wouldn’t shock me to see Dale dropped either.

My changes:
Out Hunter, Gardner, Young, Cavarra
In: Lipinski, Libba, McLean, Jong

In today’s presser Bevo said the round 1 performance had nothing to do with going in so tall. Also reiterated it wasn’t the forwards fault either.

Glad they're making changes based off training form, no fair way to do it based off round 1 when the whole bottom half of the team were as bad as each other. Plus players like Crozier and Lloyd who struggled have too many credits in the bank to justify leaving out.

That is not great to hear. Our talls are by and large sub par players. We shouldn't be loading the team with them ever.

Anybody heard anything about why we are not playing any scratch matches this weekend for the non 22 players? I could understand if we are playing interstate but we are playing at home.
Because of the reduced break before round three. Organised one with NMFC for the following week though.

Also, Laitham is set for a debut, congrats to him!

I agree with this. Although I left him our of my team, I'm kind of hoping Cavarra gets another chance.

For a small forward, 22 entries gives you next to no chance. At least he managed multiple scoring shots (unlike anyone else in the team) and won a clearance.

For a guy who has waited so long, he deserves more than that sole opportunity

My boy Vandermeer! Pumped to see him play, although interesting to see who comes out now as well seen as Lipinski Jong and Libba were essentially confirmed too
