Preview Changes v Saints

We’re too short. If St Kilda starts clunking marks we could be in real trouble. The midfield must absolutely dominate the contest for this to work out. If the mids put on another exhibition like they did against Collingwood then our height problems will be a determinant factor in a loss.

I think if Cordy's one of the players on the interchange, we'll be okay height-wise. We were too tall last time.

Gardner is likely to play on King, so someone with similar experience to him. Just has to do the job, if not surely he's out.

Like Gowers in for his aggression, hopefully he takes his chance as we need more guys with a bit of mongrel who will fly the flag.

I wouldn’t mind trying Cordy out in a genuine utility position if he’s picked on the bench. He’s proven he can chop out forward and I’d prefer to avoid playing Naughton & Bruce in the ruck for the 3/4 mins break that English needs.

I think he needs to play this week with Wood out, just to give us a bit of safety in the backline with King, Membrey & Ryder.

Always enjoy the melts at selection. Not quite the same level as those during the game which are often Epic, shown to be erroneous then flipped on their head when we win.

Since Bevo has been our coach, and keep in mind he is PART of our selection committee, not our only selector s some posts here tend to suggest, I cannot remember more than a couple of weeks where I thought that was good team selection. Inevitably when I had that thought we lost.

However, we have been finalists in 2015, 2016 and 2019 and should have been in 2017. It is easy in hindsight on the odd occasions to blame team selections, Round 1 being the obvious example. My opinion is we were not fully focused on playing due to the impending season stop and the Pies were focused for that evening.

Did I like the team selected, no but this has not been a good guide to wins and losses in Bev's time. Do I like our team selection for this week? No. Mc Clean for one should be in but this one selection in itself will make no difference to us winning or losing.

I don't get Gardner in the team, but his role appears to be as a stopper so whether he or Trengrove play I am not sure this selection on its own will make a lot of difference.

Unlike the myth that games are won by the bottom 6, most games are won by the best 10 players of your team being better than the best 10 players of the other team, as if that happens the bottom six players look better.

We will win if more of our best 10 players have better games than the Saints best 10 players. If not as happend against the pies where there best 10 were significantly better than our best 10 we will be beaten.

Therefore, yet again this is a strangely selected team, but us winning or losing is not effected by it

Gowers has swagger. You can't manufacture it. We sure as hell need some as our last two official games have been putrid.

A mate of mine has been involved at north for years and I remember him saying the dogs in ‘15 and ‘16 were regarded by the north players as being astonishing arrogant. They couldn’t work it out as we hadn’t achieved anything at the time. We had to trade Stringer, Dahl wanted out, Clay’s knee stuffed him and Libbas been injured but getting away from nice and back to arrogant, aggressive and with some swagger might see this team head up again quickly.

If that's the case, Smith and Gowers seem to love the smell of their own farts and both are new additions since the flag. Could see Sweet being the same way. Could be interesting having Gowers back in

Does he have the speed? King is quick.
The option if Gardner is out seems to be Trengove (who I like but he is slow), or Lewis Young (not good one on one). Cordy and Keath will take turns on him as well I suspect although I prefer Keath further out, intercepting.

I've had a brilliant idea. On these preview or team selection threads why don't we (ie the mods) post the team at the top of each page (like with a poll) so we can instantly refer to it during the discussion? Saves having to go back pages, or go to other sites.

Thanks!

Mofra Mutt Ant_ Kermit _Mike_ What do you think?

Mods can sticky a comment right? Is a good idea

Crozier on membrey. Keath on king and Gardner to the resting ruck. Could this be naughton's return to defence?
If Naughton made a return to defence, it makes sense that this is the week that Gowers makes his return. He plays like a short KPF (bit like Membrey)

Much happier with these changes seeing Richards back in. We've just added a ton of speed and grunt that we desperately needed. Hope it works out.

Seriously ****ing hyped for Jong to have another go. Hate to say that he rarely lasts long before the next injury, but at least he gets a crack

Knowing Jong's luck he'll get knocked out in the 1st quarter, miss the next couple of weeks with concussion, then pop his collarbone when he returns to training. Hopefully that's changed, he's due for a decent run at it and a chance to show what he's worth beyond the year.

Saints defence is a little light on experience and hight so we may cause quiet a few issues for them with three marking targets.
Just need our defence to hold up their end, as our mids have them covered.

If Cordy missed a bit of training and has been underdone for any reason, this might partly explain why he's out?

Tim English, Zaine Cordy, Taylor Duryea and Rourke Smith were on the sidelines at the beginning of training, though English was expected to train later in the session.

Good point. Also should note that Sweet is emergency this week, and English was part of that group on the sidelines. Could be concern that English may be a late withdrawal, with Sweet ready to jump in if needed
