Prediction Changes vs. Brisbane

IN: Howard, Drew, Neade, Atley

OUT: Hombsch, Toumpas, Sam Gray, Ah Chee

Hombsch goes cause if he's not defending well what's the point? Has to be dropped after that performance.

Ditto Ah Chee with winning contested possessions - 4 is what guys like Josh Green and Orazio Fantasia won.

Toumpas - sorry kid, but you're depth only.

Sam Gray - Wingard and Boak are better and Gray is apparently 'almost over' the niggle that Hinkley said he didn't have, so off you go.

Put Trengove back, Drew on the wing as a link man, Atley to fill in off the bench and Neade to replace Gray in the forward line and Robbie to play high forward, swapping with Wingard in the middle.

OUT: Darcy Byrne-Jones, Tom Clurey, Jack Hombsch, Matthew Broadbent, Tom Jonas, Hamish Hartlett, Brad Ebert, Ollie Wines, Jared Polec, Jarman Impey, Justin Westhoff, Sam Gray, Chad Wingard, Charlie Dixon, Jackson Trengove, Paddy Ryder, Robbie Gray, Travis Boak, Sam Powell-Pepper, Jimmy Toumpas, Jasper Pittard, Brendon Ah Chee

IN:

Hinkley: I'll back my team to turn it around. No changes.

If we went unchanged I wouldn't melt its a statement of some kind even if it's just to the players. If we made mass changes I wouldn't melt either that's a statement. What would really suck would be Toumpas for Young. Or SGray for Neade as the sole change.

I think you forgot about DOUGAL HOWARD. Did well today I hear.

As others have pointed out, Ken now has a real problem. Dougal must come in now, there is no denying it. However Ken has his favourites and they seem to be undroppable, which will make an already unbalanced side even more unbalanced.

Bringing in Dougal could be the best thing that happens to this team if Ken is sensible. It is the perfect time to balance the team and drop some of his undroppables.

Send Trengove back. Drop one of Hartlett, Pittard or Broadbent. Drop two if you want to bring Houston in, which might be preferable because with Jonas and Trengove down back we lack precision kicking. Hartlett and Pittard have been the worst of the 3, Broadbent is just undisciplined.

Drop Toumpas, he is not a wingman and we don't need more half-backs. Bring in White.

Drop Ah Chee, he pops up and does nice things every now and then but is far too inconsistent. Atley looks to me like he will be a stoppage beast and has a higher ceiling than Ah Chee, get him in now.

On shaky ground is Impey and Sam Gray. Gray cannot be playing in a forward role if he can't kick straight. 9.14 this year.

Ken will never drop Westhoff. But if Trengove plays down back that would be one less reason to have him in the team.

In summary, my changes
Out: Hartlett, Pittard, Toumpas, Ah Chee
In: Howard, Houston, White, Atley

See how we go with a more balanced team for a while. After that start tinkering with Boak and R.Gray. Then decide if we need to keep playing Trengove, Clurey, Jonas and Hombsch together.

If Westhoff didn't play last night we probably lose by 100. Bar a typically awful set shot he was back to his combative best in a midfield that was overrun.

Such an enigma.

Thanks - I did not see more than 10 minutes of last night for various unsavoury reasons and meant what I said in the sense that we're all keen to see Dougal take grab that roaming spot on his own merits and also deliver on holding down a KP role more often than Westy has done over the journey. He's been an enigma has Westy but he's also representative of our enigma...

A strength for us is our reserves, why not use them?

We can 100% afford to make a stand with a few players; Hombsch, Hartlett, Hoff etc. We have great young players in form to replace them across all parts of the ground.

In the past couple years, Luke Beveridge made a stand by dropping players, including Jackson Macrae, Jake Stringer, Tom Liberatore. Those players are now premiership players and the team is better for it.

We need to apply the "sunk cost" rule to a few of our players. Lobbe was played a year too long because we over-committed on his contract, Hartlett is going this way too, yet we'll keep playing them to avoid admitting we made a mistake. The fact we're paying Hartlett 600K a year vs. Houston's 100K shouldn't change the fact Houston has been more effective in a half back role this year, yet for us it does.

With trends in the AFL world moving so quickly now, the fast movers and those quick to react will get the cream and the rest will be left behind. We've got the list for a premiership, but we're far too slow to react and it will cost us a flag unless something changes.

Pittard has been putrid this season. It's time the acid was put on him about his intentions for 2018. He's most likely taking valuable development time away from Houston / Bonner.

You would play Hartlett next week? Think another Hinkley chat will do the trick?

I still can't comprehend what the actual **** was happening in Hartlett's head in this moment.

'Hmm, best to avoid physical contact here I reckon. Actually, I can probably let him step goalside of me and waltz in for an easy goal too. Yeah, that sounds like a plan.'

Also, I'm not usually one for selection night melts, but if Howard doesn't get a call up this week it's quite possible that my family will have to have me involuntarily committed.

Did anyone notice the mob our Maggies played today? They are by far the worst team in the SANFL for more than 30 years. Good to see some of our boys do well, but it was a training drill against literally 21 Cones. Some good performances by our boys, but I wouldn't bank on that form if we push too many into the AFL squad. Reward form for sure, but set them up for success, not failure.

West are really bad, but we can really only go on what we have in the 2s. We have a horrendously misfiring first team who just played traffic cones to a upper-middling if pacy Essendon side. We have several players in that side who are out of form and low on confidence, and several others who are serial underperformers. We also have some tactical holes.

In the reserves we have a team brimming with confidence and we have players who will fill some of those tactical holes.

It's obvious that the Trengove forward experiment hasn't set the world on fire. It's obvious for all of our improvement this year, we still can't enter the forwardline with any precision or penetration. It's also obvious that our small but plucky defence has big issues with giant forwardlines. Trengove must go back, and Dougal Howard must come in. Howard not coming in this week would be grounds to sack the coach on Thursday night IMO.

Young will obviously come in for Toumpas or similar.

But are those two changes enough when your established players have repeatedly burned you like these players have burned Hinkley?

Yes The quality of Essendon and West eons apart, but what more could our 2nds do yesterday to demand AFL call up

Leon Cameron came out and said players not prepared to go the distance will be replaced.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-06-11/theyll-be-replaced-giants-put-on-notice

GWS reserves side have been smashed all year in the terrible NEAFL competition because they have so many injuries, and yet Cameron is still prepared to say that players are on notice and will be dropped if they underperform.

Port have a full team playing for the Magpies and are winning almost every week and yet we hang on to underperforming players who are screaming out to be dropped. I understand that the club wants stability, but serially underperforming players need to be dropped for the betterment of the whole squad. It's not the end of the world for a player to be dropped. If they go back to the magpies and demand selection then that's great. Our list is good enough to have a serious crack at a flag but we can't forever accept crap performances.

Select in form players. Make players justify selection. Drag players who are staging for frees and dummy spitting.

By showing such ridiculous faith in the same group of players you are undermining the strength of the squad as a whole. Apathy leads to atrophy.

We have a few players who historically have let us down in big games when the heat is on. These guys are NEVER going to change.

Out:
Hartlett - Am sad about what has happened to this guy. Just don't understand. Has all the skills but just doesn't go hard enough often enough.
Westhoff - When the heat is on, we just can't rely on Hoff. Why can he never kick a goal when we really need it.
Sam Gray - Hes a small forward there to kick goals but he never does. Drives me nuts. One of the worst decision makers and worst kicks.

I don't post often and rarely criticise individual players but these 3 are the regulars who are not going to play in the next premiership IMO.

This not ready for AFL stuff is a ruddy' disease I tell ya
The one that's 1000% more relevant is 'not AFL standard'. We have have numerous players that can play well in the SANFL, but aren't any good in the AFL. It's a trend that they still keep getting games. Toumpas and Neade leap to mind this year. Some need to be stamped as 'only in dire injury emergency'.

My non-negotiable outs to not be melting are Hartlett and S. Gray. The two most easily replaced serial non-performers in our losses.

Ideally -
Outs - Hartlett, Broadbent, S. Gray, Toumpas all omitted, R. Gray injured (enough is enough, rest him and hope we make finals, this half a Robbie has not worked for a month now)

Ins - Howard, Atley, Houston, Monfries, Drew

Trengove takes the oppositions tallest KPF, Clurey the second KPF, leaving Hombsch his ideal role as on the third tall / intercept mark. DBJ, Jonas and Houston on the smalls. Pittard the +1 down back to break lines. Dixon CHF / roaming, Howard FF.

Yes, lots of youth, but I'd rather enthusiasm then senior lack of leadership.
With Monfries injured, swap him for Palmer above.
