I think he was nowhere near as bad as some here have said, but not even close to third best on ground.

He was very unlike Scott Thompson. Got a lot of the ball, but was fumbling it all night. He certainly wasn't alone in that area though.

Is there any evidence (or even any suggestion) that playing too many games at AFL level early in their careers is bad for a player's development? Who has been destroyed physically and mentally by playing too much AFL footy too soon?
Is there any evidence to the contrary? Most head coaches are fairly good man-managers and do a good job of judging when their kids need a rest. It happens at all clubs. Players coming into the side in their 1st or 2nd year and playing 22 games is relatively rare, particularly in the midfield - and happens mostly with kids who are more physically developed than their peers.
Come this time next year, will Crouch or Lyons (for example) even remember whether they played 1 more or less game at AFL level and will the fact that they played 1 more, or 5 more, be holding them back somehow?
I doubt it. I'm sure the decision to drop them would have been taken in consultation with the players themselves, with the player providing feedback as to how he is coping with the rigours of playing at the senior level.
I just don't buy that too many consecutive games can have an adverse effect on a player's development. Maybe in the short term their performance will plateau or worsen due to accumulated fatigue, but I can't see how it would break a player's career.
Depends on how far you push them. Playing the kids past the point of exhaustion only leads to injuries.

If anyone is going over, hopefully you have booked your accommodation as it took me all day to find something suitable.

Occupancy in Melbourne this weekend would be at 90%

Ended up staying at the Dockland apartments - come on you crows. Lets get a win.

In his PC, He said that he was running on the spot towards the end if the game Saturday night. With a 6 day break, he wasn't sure if he could come up and have a positive influence with his limited fitness base.

I'd say a 50/50 that he gets a rest.

seems the perfect candidate to either start as sub, or be planned for the red vest this week then IMO.

still gets the experience, gets the reduced game time, gets an 8 day break before the Cats the following week.

I'm sure Mr_Smooth would put you up! ;)

Jack Watts, Jack Trengove, Jack Grimes.
Cam O'Shea
Jarrad Grant, Adam Cooney (knees??)
Bryce Gibbs, Matthew Kreuzer (not bad but neither reached the heights expected)

that's off the top of my head. but i'm sure many could be debated.

Bowen Lockwood was destroyed physically by a club wanting him to play too much before he was ready (by forcing him to do too much in the gym).

No he wasn't. He hurt his back lifting weights and would have had the same injury had he been playing for Centrals or Port Power.

I would argue that there are other factors at play which are unique to the Melbourne trio. They have all suffered under the weight of excessive and premature expectation (for various reasons). I agree that they may have been mentally shot, but don't think similar considerations would apply to our guys.

Cam O'Shea actually now makes a passable impression of an AFL footballer, if anything I'd say his development has been fast tracked by playing regular AFL footy long before he was really capable of it.

Jarrad Grant ain't much good and never has been, and I don't reckon it has much if anything to do with his handling. I'd be happy if Grigg, Lyons or Crouch is ruined the way Cooney was and I suspect each of them would probably take a Brownlow before a premature decline.

Gibbs' development has been stunted by a coach who had no idea. Kreuzer still has plenty of time and in any case the biggest hindering factor in his development was his ACL - query whether the stress of playing too much too early could or did have any effect on him doing his knee - I have no idea.

Hopefully we are humanely put out of our misery over the next 2 weeks so this 'mathematical possibility' nonsense can be put to bed and we can focus on rebuilding for next year and manage to get at least some kind of benefit out of this abomination of a season.

Because Melbourne ejected most of their senior players and played these kids from day 1 instead, milking the PR for all it was worth until the wheels inevitably came off. Keeping James McDonald around to play another two seasons would have done wonders for them, but they were off and running on their "the youth will save us, they are the future" marketing plan, and nothing was going to stop them.

Except, you know, the youth collapsing under the physical and mental pressure.

The list of those who made it is a hell of a lot longer than that one (which includes a lot of players who have other issues).

Lyons is up to it, just play the kid.

Except clearly the club has an issue with his behaviour or something he has done, and they want to keep it internal.

That's such a slur and based on the assumption our selectors know what they are doing and there's plenty of evidence this year to challenge that assumption

the list of those that have failed would also be much longer. it's hard to remember players that fail.

anyway, I agree Lyons should be played and shouldn't have been rested/dropped.

dunno what I was arguing about now...o_O I think I was just trying to highlight that throwing the player in the deep end doesn't always end up the being the best way to handle a player.

We got 5 of us heading over. Staying at Adina Apartments. We had an extra guy wanting to come last minute but flight prices went through the roof. No accommodation does not surprise me.

Looks like some might get their wishes answered against the Pies with Sando hinting defenders might be tried up forward to compensate for no McKernan??? My hope is Hartigan will come in to cover for Talia being used up forward this week. Please no Angus Graham....

ADELAIDE'S defenders were asked to goalkicking practice at the Crows closed training session on Tuesday - and not just as reaction to the costly misses in Saturday's six-point surrender to West Coast.
Any of Adelaide's preferred defenders - Ben Rutten, Daniel Talia, Andy Otten and Ricky Henderson - are in contention to deal with Brenton Sanderson's new layer of headaches in attack after losing key forward Shaun McKernan to a two-game ban on Tuesday.

Sanderson will sit at Adelaide's match committee meeting today hearing genuine forward Lewis Johnston is not ready for an AFL recall, despite returning to SANFL action at the weekend after recuperating from a serious knee injury.

He will hear much debate on the merit of picking ruckman Angus Graham as a forward, but he is unlikely to favour giving the Richmond recruit his first try out as a Crow in Friday night's epic clash with Collingwood at the MCG.
And that leaves the shuffle of a defender to the Adelaide forward system that has been hurt by defection, injury and suspension of Kurt Tippett, Taylor Walker and McKernan respectively in the past year.

"We don't have too many fit key forwards," conceded Sanderson on Tuesday.

"We have some headaches at match committee this week... we might have to shift some guys around, we might have to play a small forward line or we might have to bring in some talls like another ruckman.

"And we still have (midfielder) Bernie Vince with his concussion and we probably won't make a decision on him until Friday. (Small forward) Ian Callinan doesn't look like he is going to come up after taking a quad injury (in the SANFL).

"Lewis Johnston played his first game in nine weeks at the weekend, so he probably needs some more footy.

Agreed. He was unlucky on the weekend. Kennedy kicked 4:

1. Free kick Sauce gave away. Kennedy admittedly had outbodied DT and was in position A to mark the ball, but we will never know.
2. Mark playing in front from a scrubby kick. Maybe DT could have done better but sometimes those sort of kicks land in forwards' laps.
3. Snap at goal while DT was on the bench.
4. On the run on the left foot. Got away from DT, who lost his feet. Still, pretty tough to defend if a key forward is going to slot them from the pocket on their opposite foot on the run.

He would be top 5 in our B&F.

Good post :thumbsu: Talia is a beauty. I wonder what odds I can get on him being AA at some point in his career.

A really quality forward is going to get opportunities any defender if they're given enough decent supply, but Talia ensures that forwards earn every single opportunity they get. We're very fortunate to have him.

Is sending Talia to full forward going to be the new send Rutten to full forward? ie it'll never happen, but people will call for it every second week when they think they see a mismatch?

Seems more like Henderson and Dangerfield forward if they're not going to bring in Graham.
