Deluca played as a small forward last time, and Brady Grey was emergency last week and has been playing in Ballas' position, but in any case why do we need to pick another small forward? We went in too small last week. You also forgot Macarthy who is available this week after his suspension.

Ah yes I forgot about Grey, would be appropriate alternative.

I think they are cautious about having a forward line that consists entirely of players who have played less than 50 games though.

Who plays as a key defensive role for Hawthorn these days? I saw that experienced players Frawley, Stratton and Birchall are all on the injury list. A bit of the game I tuned into on Saturday it seemed Sicily and Gunston were both back there. Not exactly monster type defenders.

If Tabs was an All Australian forward he would be given as many chances as Ballas.

Please no. There is absolutely no point in doing this. If Darcy needs a rest, then rest him and play Jono for the match.

ZERO point having both in the team especially when Griffen has no future.

If he needs a chop out it's Taberner, Cox, Johnson, Strnadica, Inanimate carbon rod, Suban before Griffen even gets considered.

Darcy needs to learn how to play forward eventually and he can't really do that when he's solo carrying the ruck.

Griff is the only viable option to split ruck duties with Darcy this season.

Eventually. Probably not 5 games into his career when he has a screaming opportunity to fast track his main purpose of being a ruck.

Griff and him don't play together ever unless we're in serious tank mode.

Current state of rucking has settled post 3rd man ban.
It seems that a pure ruckman taking 90% of the load and a fwd who does the remaining 10% when the ruckman is off the field is the most successful combination. Darcy seems capable of being that pure ruckman and continued growth in that area would have to be the best for his development.
We get Sandy back next year which could open the possibility of Darcy spending time forward but even in the case I'd prefer Darcy to ruck the vast majority of game time.

Pretty sure Tabs gets to play 3 poor ones before being dropped. That was certainly the case this year. I'm not a big fan of his but I think Balla has a few more credits in the bank and deserves one more chance though.

And that's exactly why it doesn't make sense.

The only way to get experience is by playing.

You are basing your argument on the premise that the young players will learn equally or better without the presence of a senior player. If you honestly believe that then it is fair to say we will have to agree to disagree.

EVERY club in the AFL appears leave at least a small core of senior players (even if they are not great performers). You need someone to set the standard and guide the young players and this goes beyond performance.

One of our small forwards should be dropped in favour of a tall for team balance. Ballantyne was the worst performer among them last weekend.

He needs to come in for 2 reasons. A - he's shown something the last 2 weeks and has earned a call up. B - Darcy is young and to carry the ruckload as a 19 year old is setting him up for exhaustion and following that a severe injury. Darcy 100% plays out the year, but he needs support.

Also, both Darcy and Cox are knackered in q4, Tabs can run the game out better.
