Can't see wholesale changes (dropping the out of form senior players) to give the youngsters a go as we would probably win and this would further embarrass the selectors - who have had a shocking year.

Because after last time, he was subsequently played as a tagging mid for 2 games and then dropped.

I imagine this week Johnston will be played across half back then next week sub at the week after dropped. Grigg will play full back then rested next week.

Ok thanks I didn't realise that. Lyons limitations (disposal, lack of speed) has led me to not rate him anywhere near as highly as many others on this forum. Much prefer The Kedge LT

I would also like to see Sam Shaw even though his SANFL form has been average. If (and it's a big if) he can stay fit, he will be a significant part of the second coming of Sando.

So given Porplyzia/Mackay/Thompson have been carried through long form slumps of multiple games at different stages of the season, we can safely assume this rule only applies to the younger players.

Looks like Sloaney will play which is great news.

Thompson has surely got to be the one to make way. He's been down on form for a while now, something is clearly not right. Hopefully it won't be Lyons but given our selections this year it won't surprise me if he is dropped, he didn't have the best game last week but Thompson barely got more touches than him despite having more than an extra quarter on the ground.

Beat me to it. So basically if you're an older player, you can spud it up all year with little fear of being dropped. However if you're a young player, you must have breakout games every week to maintain your position in the side. What a tremendous culture for a young player to be exposed to.

Conversely, if your one of a number of talented young players vying for limited spots the coach is being clear and precise with what he wants, where you stand and the ball is in your court.

I don't disagree that having clear and high expectations breeds a great culture, however that needs to be across the whole playing group and not just directed at kids coming off good games. Porplyzia/Mackay/VB/Reilly have all been gifted games this year when form warranted a spell in the magoos. I'd like to know Sando's expectations of our 'older players'.

Sando as a new coach has to contend with a conservative management, assistant coaches and a football dept with many from a previous regime and in addition a conservative fan base (the Apricot Slice brigade) who have their favourites and love their experienced players. By their nature conservatives don't like change.

I wondered if Sando is "proving" certain players aren't up to the role by playing them 2 or so weeks longer than he should have. ie Rielly & Jaensch. Granted, Mackay, Porps & Thommo have been played longer, but this might be due to standing they have in the club etc. By leaving it too long then there certainly can't be much argument about a decision to drop a player. And when dropped he want the young gun to be able to grab that spot and not let go in order to keep the other player out.... at least until such time as form has returned?

With the young guys he is setting a standard for the team in the future. With players that won't be around in a couple years, he is using them as "an example". And when a player steps up, they then take over the role. Brown and Laird have cemented their spots for example. Crouch seems to have now too. Hopefully Grigg next.

It was just a random thought. But might be plausible. And if this is true, or rather partly true we should see it difficult for Reilly to fight back into the side next year. And next year we should see changes slightly earlier in form slumps or if a player is not performing the role. (I hope)

Really want to see Kerridge used for the remainder of the season.

All about 2014 now.

Been a good year for development and hopefully a springboard to a much better 2014.

Its looking like the group of Crouch, Brown, Laird, Lynch, Kerridge, Lyons will all end up playing around 13-20 games each with Grigg,Hartigan, Johnston getting a taste of AFL footy.

Think Kerridge is going to be a round 1 lock for 2014.

To your theory - that's all well and good and I could understanding Sando's reasoning for it to a point, however if he's jeapordising the chances of winning games by playing players that he knows to be not up to standed, just to appease the conservatives within the AFC, then I would be absolutely ropeable.

I'm not sure that he did it to the point that it cost games. We lost games based on missing shots on goal, left key players unchecked and didn't work both ways. Even when we played badly we could have won upto 5 more games with straight kicking. The other games were match-day cockups.

If you look at teams with a large youth profile and a lack of seniors there is overwhealming evidence to show that losses result. We never went into games with more than 9 or so under 50 gamers. He also dropped Vince early and eventually Reilly. Johncock was dropped and fans protested........

I don't think it was an overriding policy to the detriment of the overall team. But a way to subtly cancel gold passes with the least amount of friction. And a way to set up team selections for the future, with the really young guys there aren't "fan favourites" or players that are part of the furniture at the club. Selections purely on merit become much easier.
