I'm interested to see who will return from injury. You'd think Easton Wood would be ready to slot straight back in, Stevens might be right to go but he should probably come back through the VFL since he has essentially been out since Round 6 and it will be great if JJ can get back in the VFL.

I think its time we trial Boyd and Redpath together as well. I think we need some more marking power around the ground and we certainly lack a target up forward. Not sure there will be room for the two of them when we get Crameri back but I think there is plenty of room for the both of them while he is missing. Surely its something we have to trial before finals.

B: M.Boyd Roberts Morris
HB: Wood Adams Biggs

FOLL: Campbell Wallis Bontempelli
C: Hunter Liberatore Macrae

HF: Daniel Redpath Honeychurch
F: Stringer T.Boyd Dickson

INT: Suckling Picken Jong Roughead

EMG: Webb Dunkley Williams

I think we will get done and be 8th by the end of the weekend

Bad feeing we will fall away a little second half of war but surprisingly think we can do sown damage in finals when/if everyone is back.

Simply carrying too many blokes that arnt up to it this weekend id be very surprised if we don't get a little snack again this week.

You do know we get a few players back over the next couple weeks, and along with a draw that opens up a touch, can't see us falling away too much quality wise. It's just because of the dream run of some other teams. Soft runs leading into finals can be dangerous though imo

Yeah I do but will take a while for them to get back into it after the time out.

Time will tell I hope in wrong but the Geelong game showed me personally how much the kids are struggling with full seasons but will only improve year after year

True. But there are only 9 more games before another week off, then head into finals. Think we'll be ok.

Week between rd 23 and finals will be worse, only the one womens game that whole weekend, least there was 6 games to watch this weekend...

I wrote to the league complaining about this (see below offering) a superior option. Not surprising did not get a reply.

Bye First Week September

I cannot believe the lack of discussion regarding no footy on first week in September. If I said to you 10 years ago that there would no footy in the first week in September you would be calling the men in the white coats to lock me away.

League Statement

"The AFL has introduced an extra bye at the end of the minor round to allow the top eight clubs to prepare for the 2016 finals.

Concerns over the integrity of the last round led to the change, which the AFL hopes will ensure that finals-bound clubs no longer select half-strength teams to close out the home and away season".

Whilst I acknowledge the reason for this strategy there is a much better way to achieve this than to destroy a footy tradition for fans and it will also make finals more equitable all 8 teams.

The solution is simple:

First Week

5th v 8th

6th v 7th

Ist to 4st have week off

Second Week

1st v 4th

2nd V 3rd

Winners of week 1 have week off.

Advantages

  1. There is footy in September and five weeks of finals will create additional revenue.

  2. All games can be played in prime time on Friday and Saturday nights .

  3. The 2 winning teams from 5th to 8th get a week off if they win the first week, giving them a more equitable chance for a flag without diluting the advantages of the double chance.

  4. The incentive not to rest players for will still apply. Teams 1st to 4th will still get the first week off. Winning teams that finished 5th to 8th will get the second week of the finals off and coaches will not want to risk players playing once in 3 weeks by resting players.
This is no brainer.

No the reason the break eS introduced wS to avoid teams guaranteed finals from tanking. Your suggestion still has the same flaw as the old system.

Does this reduce the incentive for teams 5th-8th to rest players? The idea of resting is not so much for a break but to be prime for the finals. If a team 5th-8th has nothing to lose in rd23 then they'll still rest ahead of the first week of finals. It does cut the chances of this happening in half though.

Also 5th and 6th have an advantage over 3rd and 4th in having a week off before the semis

Hope we keep playing expectation less footy .We always play our best that way.Engand don't always nervous. Learn a lot from that.

There are 2 reasons a team in contention would rest players

1. Is to give them a week off hoping it would be more beneficial to certain players coming into finals.

2. Losing may benefit them- example Hawks could prefer to finish 4th and say play Geelong than play GWS in Sydney. If we have a bye or not this does not change.

What I am saying under my suggestion teams 1 to 4 get a week off in the first week (same as having a bye).

The coaches of teams finishing 5 to 8 then need to consider if they rest players in round 23 and win the first week is that the best preparation. Those players would get the week off in week 2 of the finals. I suggest that it is less than ideal to have players in the 3rd week finals only playing one week in 3.

In addition there is every possibility that teams will need to
win their last game to secure the best position on the ladder e.g double chance
-home finals and even making the 8.

Some coaches may still consider to rest players if their ladder position cannot change but the chances of this happening is drastically reduced by playing the finals over 5 weeks and removing the bye.

We get footy in the first week of September which I believe should me a must.

An extra Friday and Saturday night games prime time which produces extra revenue.

I also like the fact if you finish 5 to 8 you miss the double chance but do not have to front up every week you get a rest in week 2.

This was the case when we had final 4 3 v 4 first week and 1 v 2 second week

This was raised by another poster because of the split round saying round 23 will be worse.
If you do not like just ignore it rather using words such as fcuk and crap. You must have a short fuse.

Ewww, we're not playing three ruckmen are we? Unlike Roughy & Campbell, Minson has hands of stone and isn't a particularily mobile player around the ground.
Minson won't come in. I suspect it's a Bevo tactic to keep him hungry and make him feel like he's close to playing to keep the pressure on Roughy and Campbell.
