FFS who really gives a rats toss bag - in any great numbers - about clash other than those blind pricks at the AFL.

95% of the viewing audience have HD TV screens. Oh but we can't have black on black - despite people not having issue with it for over 100 years. Then magically the AFL says we all have impaired vision and need to have clash strips.

Clash strips became a thing in the 1960's when soccer broadcasters in Europe in black and white TV days said lets have it so one side has a light coloured strip and the other a dark coloured strip so its easier to distinguish on a black and white TV. FIFA then made it a policy for the next 40 years even when coloured TV dominated the advanced nations and developing nations. They have finally changed that although FIFA still insists it for WC games.

We are way past the stage of analogue Rank Arena black and white TV's.

I couldn’t disagree with you more REH.

In fast action similar strips do and have clashed for 100 years. For the optimum viewing experience, something we should consider achieving when trying to sell our game to a new market, the contrast between the two teams should be as stark as possible.

I had no issue with GC wearing red for this very reason. Red vs Black looked great. We should be aiming for similar against the Saints and if that means we wear the white guernsey that’s perfectly fine by me.

We are not trying to sell the game as much as we are trying to sell our club. The club should wear its traditional AFL black jumper or traditional long term historical jumper, not that white crap or some made up stuff. The Chinese love and respect traditions.

Does optimum mean a 1.275% improvement in viewing experience? Because bullshit unnecessary non clash away jumpers and so called clash jumpers don't do anything for my viewing experience.

I don’t think they will care (or even be aware of) what we wear. We’re showing a fast complicated sport to fresh eyes, why not make it easy viewing?

It always surprises me how much angst this causes people, like no other sport on Earth. I can guarantee when the NFL and all the other US sports get into China that they won’t be playing Black vs Black ffs.

St Kilda have replaced Gold Coast and will play Port Adelaide as the home team in China for premiership points next season. The AFL will make the announcement as early as this week on the two clubs’ participation for the third match in Shanghai in as many years. The first Melbourne-based club to play at Jiangwan Stadium — a match tentatively set for late May — has been the result of a strong push by the Victorian government and the reluctance of the Suns to host the Power for a third straight year.
......
The Saints were flagged by The Australian in an exclusive report in April as the club set to be Port Adelaide’s next opponent in China. Falling home attendances this year at the AFL-owned Etihad Stadium made the debt-ridden Saints vulnerable to surrendering a home fixture next year. The Saints finished 16th with just four wins. Home crowds in 11 matches in 2018 fell by 65,000 (19 per cent) compared to last year. The average St Kilda home attendance this season was 25,503, down on last year’s average of 31,410. However, with millions of television viewers expected in Australia and China, it could be an exposure opportunity for the Saints to attract more corporate revenue. They currently carry a debt of more than $10 million.

This year’s game in Shanghai was estimated to have been seen by a live television audience of up to 10 million, including nine million Chinese viewers. The match was shown live on commercial channels in China with a reach of 160 million. Shanghai proved to be a tough market to break into for Gold Coast, who are understood to have made less than $200,000 from this year’s match at a cost of giving up a true home-ground advantage.
.........

The Power are still pressing for a long-term contract from the AFL to continue to play an annual premiership match in China, but they are also keen to be involved in the AFLX concept, which could open with a series in Hong Kong late next year.

Big missing bit is about how he broke the story earlier this year that it would be the saints and CEO Matt Finnis said he knew nothing of it, that was still interested in Auckland and talked about Vic trade Philip Dalidakis wanted a Vic club to replace the Suns.

And how much would they have made from playing us at Metricon (if and when it was available) in front of a similar size crowd as that at Jingwan?

On Sunday, there was Mexican soccer on TV. León v Santos, two green/white sides. One team was wearing white-and-green shirts with green shorts; the other, green-and-white shirts, with white shorts.

It was a mess! The announcer even said: "if you are having trouble, just stare at the shorts!" I laughed and changed channel.

Interesting fact only to me: GremioPower has more than once suggested a merger between Suns and Saints:
Seriously, either fold Gold Coast or merge it with Saint Kilda.
[OFF-TOPIC]I like to suggest things...

Your post made me think of a merger between Gold Coast and Saint Kilda: the Saint Kilda-Gold Coast Football Club (or Kilda-Gold Saints, KG, for short).

Avoiding the Fitzroy saga, the Saints would play 7 home games in Gold Coast (mainly v. Lions and Vic teams) and 4 in Melbourne. Home finals would be played in QSL against Vic teams; otherwise, in Melbourne.[/OFF-TOPIC]
St Kilda-Gold Coast Football Club

Club’s full name: St Kilda-Gold Coast Football Club
Club’s short name: The Kilda-Gold Saints (KG)
Colours: red, white, black, and gold
Guernsey: current St Kilda’s
Badge: current St Kilda’s, but with a golden trim around it, and “St. K. G. C.” written on top, also in gold.
Home grounds: Metricon (Gold Coast); Etihad (Melbourne)
Home games: 7, in Gold Coast (mainly against Victorian clubs and Brisbane); and 4, in Melbourne (mainly against non-Victorian clubs, except the Lions).
Home Finals: against Victorian clubs, in Gold Coast; otherwise, in Melbourne.
Reserve League: club would decide between the VFL (Sandringham Zebras) or the NEAFL.
First Administration: current St Kilda’s, which would decide who from Gold Coast Suns they would like to keep.
First Squad: see post below.

- Considering away games, the Kilda-Gold Saints would play a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 13 games in Melbourne per H&A season.

Lol that’s pretty bad. More players and more physical contests makes Aussie Rules even worse viewing when the strips are similar.

I guess that if Leon (the visitors) were all white, and Santos were with green shorts and socks, it would had been a bit less messy — although not enough to make the game watchable.

I may be wrong, but I still think that the Saints' guernsey hasn't much black on the front, and ours have enough white on the back, to make a game between the teams hard to follow. If we wear white shorts, I believe it will be fine.

It might be fine, but it wouldn’t be good.

Does this hurt your eyes? This is close to what it would look like if we played in our Maggies jumper and white shorts and St Kilda i their home jumper and black shorts.

and this is very black on black dominated jumpers

Lockhart Road looking at the AFL job description in the post 6 above this one, I reckon Jamie Pi would go close to getting the job if he applied. He doesn't have a strong commercial background, but has been a financial planner for the last 4 years running his own practice, but he ticks a lot of the other requirement boxes.

The first one is not even close REH. There’s way more white on the original Collingwood jumper than there is on the PBs, so much so that they actually played against one another in the early 90s as I’m sure you know.

The prelim final is closer to what it would look like. It’s passable, but it’s not great.

The seek.com advert indeed reads as if it’s written around a particular person plus a few extras and Jamie’s c.v. would produce more ticks than crosses.
He currently is multicultural coach at St Kilda.
seek.com also has a high level link with St Kilda.

In 2014 when we stepped in to save the China national team which became Team China in time for IC14, Jamie was their coach, and remains deeply grateful to PAFC for making the whole thing happen, and for organising Team China’s quantum performance leap in 2017. He would be a trustworthy and capable no. 2 to Dave Stevenson so far as we are concerned. Dave now focusing more on India.

Sure the Maggies jumper has more black than Collingwood but the Richmond has more black than the Saints jumper, but it didn't cause any real issues with people with decent vision and HD TV, 4 years ago.

There is plenty of contrast. That Riewoldt photo he was against Alex Rance on left hand side with the normal Richmond Black with standard yellow sash jumper. Can't remember massive protests from that game that people couldn't pick the difference.

That Richmond jumper with the yellow sides actually has less black than the Saints jumper and it was still an iffy matchup.

There isn’t “plenty of contrast” at all. Plenty of contrast is red vs blue e.g. Swans vs Eagles which always looks amazing. Black/something vs Black/something is marginal at best, which is why all the Big 4 Vic matchups tend to look terrible. Carlton vs Collingwood (black jumper) especially is always a mess to the point that Eddie McGuire himself has decreed that they’ll wear their white version instead from next year onwards.

In any event I think the odds of us wearing the PBs in Shanghai are slim to none anyway so I won’t derail the thread any further.
