In giving 4 years the Board are effectively saying that any underperformance is not Scott’s fault - it has been the quality/durability/experience of the list or lack of effort.
No point in us whinging about development, selection, game plan, player prep/pre match, game plan and tactics - the club believes this is okay.
Says to me that the playing group must really like and admire Scott - I guess that is a good thing as they are more likely to believe and less likely to leave.

The inconsistent effort and performance doesn't show me that they are playing as a unified outfit... Our results over a long period have been largely individual driven. I don't see any spirit or determination.

It is surprising that you don't see spirits, you seem to see plenty of other figments of your imagination.

Mmmm... Ok... Let me get this right. The Club ravaged its depth for big name recruits?? Enlighten me?? Please...

So Danger and Ryan Gardner for Picks 11 (Milera),33 (Hibberd) and Dean Gore
Tuohy for Smedts, Kerstens' pick (63) and a down grade from Pick 16 to 22
Stanley and Cunico for Christensen when indeed we had NO depth at the Ruck position was a step backwards??
Henderson for Pick 17 which was a Jarrod Berry(17) Powell-Pepper(18)Tim English(19) Will Hayward(21) Jordan Ridley(22)
So are you saying these trades ravaged our depth ?? Did it ravage the quality of players on our list??
Geeez... You are kidding aren't you??

So Danger, Tuohy, Stanley, Cunico, Henderson & Gardner... i'll add Scooter here as well(He was FREE).

All come in at the expense of...

Wayne Milera
Mitch Hibberd
Dean Gore
Billy Smells
Shane Kertsen
Al Bundy
and lets say Jarrod Berry.

Yep we really got bent over a screwed BIG time on all these trades/acquisitions.

Of course the Club would back itself on being a contender. Do you expect them to just sit idly by?? Tread water?? Go backwards?? Tank a year?? Slip back to the cats of the 70's?? the mid 80's?? Of course not.... Bloody hell SMH.
Two Prelims in those two years and hopefully one better this year. That is betting on yourself... a bit of luck might of been a different result.
Thats sport. Not a business in trading commodities, assets or providing a service. Its a game of football that needs everything to go right to succeed. If you believe that if you simply make moves a,b,c and d that it results in a guaranteed Cup in said year you are clearly delusional.

Oh and which ones did we over pay again?? Nevermind...

Oh and how stupid do we look now picking Tim Kelly and that Abbott guy....instead of some 18 yo ruckman who will spend the next 3 years to fill out and be ready to play in 2021?? That is as stupid as it gets for me.... SMFH

I understand disappointment.. I like winning as much as the other guy. But being salty & bitter that ultimate success and glory doesn't come around year in year out is quite sad to see & read.

Fun Fact; Who gives a Rats' Toss Bag??

Cheers & Go CATTERS!!

Bloody excellent post.

They love signing this bloke up just prior to finals it's as though they know it's a harder sell after, for the record I think his last contract was a mistake and the timing of this one is a joke with a final series and 12 months still to run on this contract,we need to load up with good assistants and revised gameplan or in 4 years we will be looking back on Chris Scott the wasted years.

Disregarding the father sons, our flag teams had 3 top 10 picks and none higher than 7
We are the example that you can build a great team without the very top picks so maybe you're the one that hasn't been following the team for a long time

Well done missing the point of my answer. The original poster was wondering why we didn’t have many AA selections in the period Scott had been in charge.

Yes, the dominant GFC premiership winning team had more AA players. So what? That’s my point - higher profile means more chance of an AA.

Even Darren Milburn and Cam Mooney were lifted to AA status because of the sheer dominance of the team ... well done ... ‘Todd’...

I feel like everyone trashing this decision has maybe overlooked the history of the game post free agency. People are looking at the age of the guns and thinking the lack of genuine best in comp category players under 22 is an issue. It isn't. When they retire we will have
A) plenty of cap space
B) a coaching group that despite the haters is seen externally as very competent, and especially important, stable.
C) some kids who will never eat huge cap but are demonstrated role players
D) a couple of young guns probably

That's the perfect conditions for signing a bunch of free agents and trade targets and going around again. in the last decade name a team that has "bottomed out" and without serious trading or a massive afl house intervention has got back into serious top 4 contention.

People saying we shouldn't have traded for the players we did are ignoring the fact that being a non-relevant team in a post free agency world means never getting better. Just ask the teams that have tried to build through the draft. If you're not a destination club you will punished at the trade table and those early picks you took will be requesting trades at the earliest point possible.

It used to be that the only sustainable advantage a team had in footy was coaching, now we can add their brand to that. Rightly it wrongly the cats brand is looking good and the external perception of Scott is a prime reason. In any case Scott is really just the media guy, the assistants is where the real coaching is being done in modern footy. So maybe everyone should just like, chill out our something. Go have a beer.

Well that pushes our next flag out to a minimum of 15 years.

It's just a boys club now.

I particularly liked the quote "To have been able to integrate so many new players into our club, play attractive football and keep us consistently in the finals mix has been an exceptional effort."

Attractive football? Maybe Colin should try watching a game

Since when is making finals a measure of success?

Most clubs play for flags we play for finals.

Another 4 years of Scott we can expect an extremely slow transition down the ladder. A couple more years of scraping into the finals before we become a 10th-14th team and then as Scott leaves we will be winning a spoon or 2. Would cap off his coaching career greatly.
I really enjoyed reading this. Keep up your great posting. And keep fighting the good fight! You’re our last hope.

"Chris has shown himself to be one of the best coaches in the AFL"

Ummmm...when exactly was that!!!!

Personally i wanted to get Hinkley back to Geelong, think he would do a 10 times better job than Scott but oh well the club has backed itself into this corner now so they will have to deal with the fallout when we fail to make finals next season and beyond. No Imagination, no chance of a flag, gonna be a boring 4 years.
I like Hinkley, but seriously, what has he achieved at Port Adelaide?

Stephen Wells has spoken about this a lot about how Free Agency, future pick trading etc has essentially become as big as drafting and trading and that astute clubs need to understand how to get the most out of this to stay in contention longer.

Without free agency, teams like the Hawks and GFC would have dropped down the ladder so fast.

We have just signed a coach for 4 years who with a gun side has won only 3 of his last 10 finals and two of those wins we barely scraped over the line.

If you don’t see the corruption now you never will.

RIP the Geelong I knew and loved. We are now a club of dour défense and space filling.

Oh Seeds, dropping the ball plus 50metre penalty for speaking bollocks.

The club I knew spent decades breaking hearts and has spent a decade making us proud.

Mediocrity i would say melbourne, Collingwood, Saints, freo, port, adel, dogs etc. Just three teams have defied mediocrity.

Kent Kingsley said late last year that there is a huge disconnect between Scott and the players. Judging by this year, he looks to be correct. Bit silly to be signing him up before the season is finished. Might've been a bit harder to sell if we bomb out of finals again I suppose.

When I think of GFC insiders I definitely think of Kent Kingsley.

On a side note....

A lot of detractors wax lyrically about Matthew Scarlett. In fact every single person who loves the GFC knows what Scarlett did for this team. He’s ruthless, abrasive and is principle driven first and foremost. He was known as the de facto leader behind Harley.

Most people would do well to consider how a GFC legend (who was instrumental in keeping Bomber, at the end of 2006, by threatening to walk), who has such a huge amount of love for the club would support Scott as a player and then subsequently come back and be one of his assistant coaches...
Not true about Scarlett and Bomber. Scarlett say himself that he didn't want change, he believed that they could win a GF and therefore didn't want a new coach. Also there was a belief that it would be -forgotten his name but was our mid field coach who ended up on non footy charges- who he had a disagreement off field with so he and the other players, out acted out of loyalty to Scarlett- supported Bomber.

I just hope he gets along well with Kelly because if not news of this re-signing might be enough to send him back home to Perth.

He must either get along with him or just really loves the way he goes about it because almost all of his recent press releases about players has included a mention about Kelly. Whether he's just trying to include him and make him feel welcome at Geelong I don't know, maybe behind closed doors there are a few strong relationships between players and coaches

I can't say I am surprised, but I don't know what another option was.

Untried coach with our list at this point? Could easily end up Mick Malthousing or Ross Lyoning our list.

It shows they've been reading what gets posted here.

"To have been able to integrate so many new players into our club". It's called list management, and it's mandatory - you have to get rid of players every year. And he's been coach for 8 years. Didn't realise it was a shock that some list turnover occurred.

Be fascinating to see what unfolds in a few weeks time.

They're publicly setting the expectation that the list will be built around him so their demand for a first round pick in return will seem more like a minimum requirement
