FWIW Cook said we were aiming for 14-15 wins this season and will finish with 13. 1 off the mark of what they hoped isn't bad. So I guess the club likes what Scott is doing with us.

"During his tenure Scott has led Geelong to victory 130 times in 188 contests. His winning rate of 69.5% is the highest in AFL history for a coach with over 100 games."

Seriously, for Geelong supporters this is solid gold. A great coach, a great mentor to his players and a wonderful signing.
Pretty much agree.

A rebuild is sooner than later, its arguable if you go with a fresh face or stick with coaching stability.

I don't see any other coaches out there that would be a better signing than Scotty, unless its Clarkson, and he's certainly not available.

As long as we keep Scarlo in that coaches box, then all good, have some faith.

I'd love to see this board in a month if we win the flag from 8th position... lol

Great post. What hasn't helped Scott is first round picks that haven't come on during his tenure. Smedts, Lang, Thurlow and Cockatoo (injuries) were all first round picks drafted during Scott's tenure. The club also had high hopes for Kersten and Hamling who were both taken in the early 30's. Caddy gave us next to nothing, nothing to warrant the first round pick we gave up for him anyway. He may be playing great footy at Richmond now, but it just wasn't working out for him with us. Motlop never became the consistent player we all thought he could be early in his career. Christensen walked out on the club just when he was starting to come on nicely for us. Menzel could of been anything if not for those injuries. The decision to get Danger, Hendo, Smith, Selwood and Touhy was absolutely the right call. We needed to fix the age imbalance we had on our list. We needed those mid 20's players. This prevented us bottoming out and losing money when people decide to not renew memberships. Carlton, Brisbane and St.Kilda are currently proving that bottoming out isn't necessarily the best way to rebuild a list and a club.

That lean period where those first round picks didn't come on have only just started to catch up with us and hurt us now. The last couple of drafts look really promising, we need to continue that trend and get good young players into the club and also get some free agents in that are available (Dahlhaus etc). Scott certainly can coach, the decision to re-appoint him is the right one and it ensures the stability of the club moving forward.

You obviously don't understand the Chris Scott thread. There is no room for this common sense, well reasoned post. I for one am sick of all the Chris Scott lovers who continue to make articulate, intelligent statements that make the haters look like foolish emotional football simpletons. Don't worry about the fact that he has a record that all but one or two clubs would simply love to lay claim to. Don't worry about the fact that he has transitioned an entire side whilst remaining relevant. Carlton, Brisbane, St Kilda, Essendon, Freemantle, Melbourne, Collingwood, Port, West Coast ect ect ect have not been able to do this and have also been no where near a flag. Sorry I am getting influenced by your post and forgetting my nonsensical hatred. Chris Scott is no good and any argument in the alternative will result in me blocking my ears and screams nanananna.

Shhhhhh, you had me at hysterical nonsense

1. Name those players that are left, and consider reasons they are not B-A graders.
2. He now has 4 years to develop his team.
And if there is no flag, so be it.
17 other clubs are also in the hunt.

Agreed.

What I don’t get either is this god given apparent right we believe we have that every pick 20 45 and 70 has to become an AA player or a Brownlow medalist or your coach is a failure.

The system is designed in a way that where we keep finishing we aren’t supposed to draft A grade talent. The system is designed so we don’t pick them up.

It’s quite hypocritical to say Scott isn’t a great developer despite every single player that has come to Geelong from another Club has had career best form who hasn’t had injury problems.

So why is it he gets better results out of Henderson dangerfield tuoey Stanley than their previous coaches could??

If I recall correctly a certain Tom Hawkins was on the cusp also of being delisted and Scott turned his career around and turned him into our best key forward since ablett senior.

Not only did Scott prove he could coach the side better than mark Thompson could in 2011, but he also gets the best development out of recycled players.

Wherever there is actual proof and a direct comparison of a before and after with another coach, Scott comes out the development king

And players like menegola as well. Couldn't get a game for others teams and now he is certainly a good player at Geelong. Developed him terribly!

Best news I’ve had this season regarding the club.
LOVE the signing.... LOVE it even more as it gives us stability for the next 4 years.
Yes the nay sayers will be out in force.
What I will say is.
Get around him!
Get on Board!
There are 3-4 good coaches (Clarko, Horse, Buckley and Scott)in this league and we have one and kept him for another 4 years.
The club will be well served by Scotty as he has and will be a great Ambassador for the Geelong Football Club.
Cheers Chaps! GO CATTERS!!

good news
have not been completely 100% happy with everything he has done..but that is expected
his good points out weigh the faults which is mainly relying on the experienced players too often
seems the young players are there just to help the established players, not to take over and one day be even better.
Scott is media savvy which can not be underestimated, especially when comes to the bottom line of operating a football club.

also think we should look for a Neil Balme type to assist, know a coach can not do everything

Not sure what the rush to sign him was. Hopefully things turn out like Blitz's contract did. Moans and groans about that contract extension, but so far that has worked out ok.

But the Big Footy server will implode if we lose next week or lose the Elimination Final (loss after a bye again).

Also, when you go out and recruit senior players with the express purpose of competing for a flag, it makes me think that a pass would at least be a grand final appearance.

You fail to mention that we've also debuted 15 players over the last two years, and often feided younger/less experienced teams than our opposition in that time.

The contract extension was completely expected, and would have been offered by any club given his record—best w/l ratio in VFL/AFL history, missed the finals only once in eight seasons, a premiership, and a list turned over while remaining highly competitive.

And it's good news for you and the other self appointment coaching experts, as you'll get four more seasons to bleat away.

Good to see all the "quality" traits of the first 3 iterations of this thread are being well supported in the 4th.
Bring on another 10000 posts.

AS for the signing - a little premature for mine - could have seen the year play our first - but that said stability at both the board and coaching level is generally good for clubs.

CS still has improvements to make IMO and things to learn - like all coaches do - and now we will see it happen with him at the helm.

Go Catters

Because the club ravaged its depth in order to pay for the big-name recruits it went after and has also failed to develop decent enough players within Scott's initial list turnover period.

Those new players coming in just exemplify Scott's developmental failures and prove his transition rhetoric of years back to be a failure to eventuate. Motlop, Murdoch, GHS, Caddy, Lang, Smedts, Kersten, McCarthy, Thurlow, Cockatoo were the guys pegged to fill out the side.

The club absolutely bet on being a contender in the 2016/17/18 period. Why else would they have brought so many senior players from other clubs in at high expense (multiple first-round picks), even when it meant over-paying for guys who hadn't proven to be able to perform at a level commensurate to the trade cost (Stanley, Tuohy, Henderson)? Why else would they have brought in recycled players to try to pad out depth or hope to address key issues (Crameri, Black)? Why else would they have opted to draft mature-age players who would be ready to play seniors immediately (or perhaps would in a shorter span of time than an 18 year old), including a player who the club will likely get 1-2 years out of because the flight risk was so high as well as extremely speculative players like House and Abbott?

Fun fact: on the weekend, Geelong fielded the oldest team of the round.

Our record, in comparison to opportunity, still stacks up pretty well on the drafting front IMO. A few failed p15-odd and mid-thirties players doesn't change that.
If you look at a side like Hawthorn, who have had more on-field success in the last 8 years and worse positions in the draft, I'd say they've made better use of their picks. They have far more players who have now become decent, consistent contributors to their side.

"Chris has shown himself to be one of the best coaches in the AFL"

Ummmm...when exactly was that!!!!

Personally i wanted to get Hinkley back to Geelong, think he would do a 10 times better job than Scott but oh well the club has backed itself into this corner now so they will have to deal with the fallout when we fail to make finals next season and beyond. No Imagination, no chance of a flag, gonna be a boring 4 years.

Is that No finals hinkley? Love ken but seriously ken is not what we need.

Macarthy on the hand would be perfect as development coach.

Mitchel in as replacement for knights. Someone who argues with scotty as Caracella was rumoured to have.

Dont give me that shit....he didnt build that team, he inherited it from Bomber, bloody Brendon Bolton could have won a premiership with that team!!!!

Except that team got beat easily in 2010. Someone did something in 2011.

I don't get why you haven't been posting fun facts about the many rounds where we've been in the younger bracket of team line ups this year. It almost feels like you're cherry picking something to suit your argument.

Mmmm... Ok... Let me get this right. The Club ravaged its depth for big name recruits?? Enlighten me?? Please...

So Danger and Ryan Gardner for Picks 11 (Milera),33 (Hibberd) and Dean Gore
Tuohy for Smedts, Kerstens' pick (63) and a down grade from Pick 16 to 22
Stanley and Cunico for Christensen when indeed we had NO depth at the Ruck position was a step backwards??
Henderson for Pick 17 which was a Jarrod Berry(17) Powell-Pepper(18)Tim English(19) Will Hayward(21) Jordan Ridley(22)
So are you saying these trades ravaged our depth ?? Did it ravage the quality of players on our list??
Geeez... You are kidding aren't you??

So Danger, Tuohy, Stanley, Cunico, Henderson & Gardner... i'll add Scooter here as well(He was FREE).

All come in at the expense of...

Wayne Milera
Mitch Hibberd
Dean Gore
Billy Smells
Shane Kertsen
Al Bundy
and lets say Jarrod Berry.

Yep we really got bent over a screwed BIG time on all these trades/acquisitions.

Of course the Club would back itself on being a contender. Do you expect them to just sit idly by?? Tread water?? Go backwards?? Tank a year?? Slip back to the cats of the 70's?? the mid 80's?? Of course not.... Bloody hell SMH.
Two Prelims in those two years and hopefully one better this year. That is betting on yourself... a bit of luck might of been a different result.
Thats sport. Not a business in trading commodities, assets or providing a service. Its a game of football that needs everything to go right to succeed. If you believe that if you simply make moves a,b,c and d that it results in a guaranteed Cup in said year you are clearly delusional.

Oh and which ones did we over pay again?? Nevermind...

Oh and how stupid do we look now picking Tim Kelly and that Abbott guy....instead of some 18 yo ruckman who will spend the next 3 years to fill out and be ready to play in 2021?? That is as stupid as it gets for me.... SMFH

I understand disappointment.. I like winning as much as the other guy. But being salty & bitter that ultimate success and glory doesn't come around year in year out is quite sad to see & read.

Fun Fact; Who gives a Rats' Toss Bag??

Cheers & Go CATTERS!!

Is anyone else a bit confused as to why we are supposedly aiming to win 14-15 games? Cook has done a lot off the field for this club to bring it back from where it was however his recent performances have me a bit worried. Listening to him speak I get a mediocrity vibe (always bringing up equalisation and how we are doing well not to be at the bottom of the ladder) comes across as an average attitude which actually has represented the way our club has performed for a long time. Has beens who are always around the mark but not willing to take any risks to bring ultimate success. Feels like we are treading water - as long as we stay in the 8 and bomb out in finals all is well at Cat land because we are denying equalisation !!!

Well that pushes our next flag out to a minimum of 15 years.

It's just a boys club now.

I particularly liked the quote "To have been able to integrate so many new players into our club, play attractive football and keep us consistently in the finals mix has been an exceptional effort."

Attractive football? Maybe Colin should try watching a game

Since when is making finals a measure of success?

Most clubs play for flags we play for finals.

Another 4 years of Scott we can expect an extremely slow transition down the ladder. A couple more years of scraping into the finals before we become a 10th-14th team and then as Scott leaves we will be winning a spoon or 2. Would cap off his coaching career greatly.

We have just signed a coach for 4 years who with a gun side has won only 3 of his last 10 finals and two of those wins we barely scraped over the line.

If you don’t see the corruption now you never will.

RIP the Geelong I knew and loved. We are now a club of dour défense and space filling.
Not your best work, but a fun read nevertheless.

Lol corruption.

Because 14-15 wins this season is a top 4 spot
