Review Comeback Kings Do It Again - Freo by 27 Points Over Carlton

Meh, there’s wet weather footy and then there’s that shit weather that was going on for the first quarter and a bit. Boys were unsettled and it took a bit to get going. Ngl, I was worried but also strangely confident that we would eventually run them over. While I would like to see us destroy those crapola teams, I’ll settle for pulling off wins against top teams as ultimately those are that win the premiership.

What I do like a lot lately is that for every player that is having a quiet day, someone else seems to bob up and plays very well. That’s a good sign.

my adult son finally lost his life after 13 years of fighting Hodgkins Lymphoma last Sunday. He lived with me as I was his carer. He was never into sports and definitely wasn't interested in AFL, despite my ongoing allegiance to Freo since their inception and his childhood. He would annoy me by cooking in the kitchen during games, (I like to totally concentrate), today I soooo missed his annoyance, but also happy that Freo fought back.

Condolences for your loss, puts the importance of these games into perspective.

Pos:
Encouraging to win like that with Serong being kept quiet. O'Meara really helped with his blocking and going after the tagger in the second. Forwards all did their job.
Cox, McDonald and Clark were enormous in keeping us in the game in the first half, although Clark was bombing his kicks high a lot.

Neg:
Carlton brought the pressure and we went back to over-handballing a lot.
TDK owned Jackson/Darcy early. Cripps was able to burst out of the stoppage when he got it - we simply have no one like that if Young is out.
Weather was shocking, I was on the protected side of the ground and still got rain coming through the gaps on me.

Did notice Reid attending a few stoppages, it might be worth throwing him a few CBAs and use his kicking because even when we won a centre clearance we were turning it straight over.

For the first 16 minutes of the game Jackson rucked and we got slaughtered in the middle. Darcy played forward for quite a bit of those 16 minutes and was relatively useless. Darcy rucked for 4 minutes and was ok, before resting.

Once we put Darcy as 1st ruck and Jackson rucked rover that changed the game. The final nail in Carlton was JOM doing a job on Hewett.

Good 3rd quarter, excellent 4th quarter but I would love to know what it is about our game that makes us susceptible to shit teams jumping us, why can we match it with the best teams in the league but struggle against teams we should we pumping? What doesn’t translate? Is it mentality? I’m more confident about the Brisbane game than I am against Port next week.

I have a theory.

There’s somewhat of a predictability with the best sides. You can gameplan for that. That predictability becomes our best asset.

The poorer sides aren’t as committed and we can be hurt on turnover. We try to move with handball, but the poorer sides simply don’t move. We handball straight into pressure.

Once we started to kick out of congestion we completely over ran them.

We don’t try that early in games because hack kicking forwards isn’t how we wish to operate.

There’s 100% something in it.

Next year I hope it evolves. We have a guy Shai Bolton who should be given a license to cheat forward. I think it’s already been coached out of him.

Pretty even spread between the three talls so far this year:

1
Josh Treacy
35
2
Jye Amiss
28
2
Patrick Voss
28
4
Michael Frederick
26
5
Shai Bolton
23
6
Murphy Reid
20

This list when combining goals scored with direct goal assists is:

Treacy 35 + 11 = 46
Frederick 26 + 14 = 40
Reid 20 + 18 = 38
Amiss 28 + 9 = 37
Voss 28 + 9 = 37
Bolton 23 + 12 = 35

Interesting that Voss and Amiss are so close, Voss with 21 behinds to Amiss' 13 and Voss' 4 more shots at goal. OOF from Amiss.

Murphy Reid has a few more games to build one of the best debut scoring seasons since Cyril Rioli.

So sorry for your loss

I think one of the main reasons is the good teams don't tag Serong. They back their own players, whereas the scrubber teams try to lock him down.

Those goal assists are great and show how team oriented they all are. Freddy cops a bit on here but he’s having a very good season too.

**** em

Who gives a shit what those Eagle nuffies think about us.

They have fallen into a big bowl of irrelevancy
A club that provides such endless mirth and entertainment is hardly irrelevant. They provide a solid public service, and should be respected for what they bring to the competition.

Where does Switkowski and Jackson sit?

Omeara, Oscar, Worner and Clark were the best today - It's great that the lesser lights are playing so well!
I wouldn't call Clark a lesser light.

Hes probably been one, if not, the best player we've had this year.

But yes it was pleasing seeing the others start to put in some quality performances.

Flowers to JL for correcting whatever the hell that first half was. Our intent and attitude was really below par and the method was nuts constantly trying to handball chain while it was slippery and the pressure was up by Carlton.
At the game you could see the angst from our talls wondering and waiting for the ball to come their way.

Onto the second half we became much more predictable, getting territory quickly and giving our forwards a sniff.
Again even more flowers to the coaches box for the tactical changes adjusting to Young out and what was in front of us.
JOM to Hewett and Jackson to Cripps were absolute A+ moves that gave us stoppage momentum.

Worner, Cox, Clark really great games, Vossy unreal goals and moments, all round great win with what Calrton brought, laughable thinking this is the best they have played in 3 months.
