A post I made on the D&T board which I thought was relevant to our contracts thread.

Looks like Nahas' position on the list will come down to A. Greenwood leaving B. If we secure a Cooney, Varcoe etc. and C. Whether we rate him higher than a 4th round pick.

The other four are gone.

Contracted players - Age Round 1, 2015

30+: Harvey, Petrie, Waite, Firrito, Dal Santo, Wells
27-29: Grima, Thompson, Gibson, McMahon, Swallow, Thomas, Higgins, (Cooney)
24-26: Adams, Goldstein, Hansen, Tippett*, Currie, Tarrant, Wright, Black, Ziebell, Daw, (Greenwood)
21-23: Bastinac, Cunnington, Macmillan, Jacobs, Mullett, Harper, Delaney, Atley, Brown, McKenzie, Wood, Garner
18-20: McDonald, Dumont, Turner*

* Rookies
Likely delisted: Anthony (27), Nahas (27), Hine (23), Curran (21), Wilkins (20)

If we do trade Cooney for a 4th round pick as reported, that leaves us taking Rounds 1-3 picks to the ND for the 7th year in a row adding three players to the 18-20 bracket.

Personally I'm comfortable with the balance of our list, clearly we need to have a crack at a flag while Harvey & co. are around but 8 of those players 18-23 played finals for us in 2014. Another 6 from the 24-26 have been mainstays in our 22 for much of the season. (7 including Greenwood and Adams & Hansen missing finals due to injury)

At the end of 2015 Dal Santo, Wells and Waite will all have contracts to go around again in 2016. We'll have to keep Tippett and Turner on rookie contracts at the beginning of 2015 unless we drop a contract player so we can take our 3 picks to the Draft, unless of course we lose Greenwood and don't acquire Cooney or another player.

Obviously we need the 21-26 group to step up again to become a genuine threat, but we saw how Dal Santo played late in the season, I can absolutely see the value of having Cooney in the rotation come the business end of the season, especially if Greenwood leaves.

I'm a Jmac fan, but 3 years? Massive show of faith, hoping he repays.

Aside from having a broken bone last year I don't see any reason why he doesn't deserve it, IMO. He was excellent I thought in both his finals appearances and I think we would've fared a bit better against the Swans with him in the side. Very valuable to our defensive unit.

As I said, I'm a fan, you don't need to sell him to me. But 3 years is something I wouldn't give to many players.

But it's really 2, since 2015 was already locked in. A 1 year extension is for guys who are touch and go thanks to age or body (Boomer, Narni) or guys that you don't really care whether they accept the offer or not (Cruize, Jacobs, the initial offers to Levi).

With the regular "He's not worth that much" etc. conversations that go on from time to time, worth noting the salary distribution:

Salary 2013 listed/ 2014 listed

$0 — $60,000 9 — 2

$60,001 — $100,000 109 — 90

$100,001 — $200,000 213 — 198

$200,001 — $300,000 156 — 147

$300,001 — $400,000 115 — 128

$400,001 — $500,000 64 — 76

$500,001 — $600,000 22 — 32

$600,001 — $700,000 19 — 26

$700,001 — $800,000 10 — 10

$800,001 — $900,000 7 — 6

$900,001 — $1,000,000 0 — 2

$1,000,001 +5 — 2

From this news.com.au article, mirroring the on on the AFL site.

Average salary is $283K.

So, using the 2014 figures to give a percentage, then applied to a list of 45 players, assuming we followed the AFL average distribution as per below.

$0 — $60,000 0.3% (0 players)

$60,001 — $100,000 12.5% (5-6 players) We have 5 rookies.

$100,001 — $200,000 27.5% (12 players)

$200,001 — $300,000 20.4% (9 players)

$300,001 — $400,000 17.8% (8 players)

$400,001 — $500,000 10.6% (5 players)

$500,001 — $600,000 4.5% (2 players)

$600,001 — $700,000 3.6% (1-2 players)

$700,001 — $800,000 1.4% (0-1 player)

$800,001 — $900,000 0.8% (no players)

$900,001 — $1,000,000 0.3% (no players)

$1,000,001 0.3% (no players)

In reality, if we assume 5 players in the 60-100K bracket, one in the $600-700K bracket (Boomer?) and one above $700K (Spitta?) then we'd have a couple of extras somewhere in the middle brackets between $100 - $600K. Indeed, on average, 76% of players are in the $100-$500K bracket.

Average salary is $283K.
I saw somewhere else in the last couple of days that when you exclude all the players on the mandatory standard 2-year rookie contract, the average salary for 3rd+ year players is about $380,000. Not as hard to justify $450K for someone you consider above average in their positions when you look at it that way.

Interesting this was from the article on the Swans trade restrictions

THE AFL has softened the trading ban imposed on the Sydney Swans, with the club allowed to recruit players at or below the current average wage of $340,000 in the 2015 trade period.

Doesn't seem to add up with the figures from the article Kimbo posted. Maybe the 340 figure is excluding rookies

My rough guess at the sort of distribution at North.

$0 — $60,000
0.3% (0 players)

$60,001 — $100,000 12.5% (5-6 players) Warren, Nahas, Fordham, Preuss, Wallace

$100,001 — $200,000 27.5% (12 players) Durdin, Nielsen, Vickers-Willis, Dumont, Turner, Brown, McDonald, Wood, Tippett, Garner, McKenzie, Currie.

$200,001 — $300,000 20.4% (9 players) Macmillan, Gibson, Harper, Tarrant, Wright, Grima, Adams, Jacobs, McMahon, Firrito, Mullett

Yeah, that's the one. I was doing it from memory and probably conflating the $280 with the $3-something to get $380.

Yep that's excluding first- and second-year players as they're on a fixed salary.

Surely first year players wouldn't be on somewhere between 60 and 200,000. Isn't the wage of the first contract for draftees only like 50,000, and rookies even less?
