Any VFL watchers seen Wade Derksen play for GWS seconds this year?

Averaging 20.9 disposals and 9.2 marks as a KPD.

23 years old and 197cm tall according to the GWS website. Out of contract at the end of this season.

Considering he's behind Aleer who can't break into their AFL side, seems a likely type to look for opportunities elsewhere.

Been pleasantly surprised with Edwards and (in particular) Brock so far, but Derksen would presumably be a cheap gamble and at the very least excellent depth.
Wanted to get to Melbourne last year but GWS refused to deal him. It’s been mentioned he still wants to get there for family reasons next year. (Has kids and I believe his misses is from there are the reasons) would be a very nice get.

Blight I think seems the most likely. Still on a rookie deal, huge numbers in the VFL and not even getting named as an emergency. Balta, Miller, Gray, Broad, Trainor, Gibcus all appear in front of him.

I feel like we have the Bulls in Hewitt & Reid, some silk in Brockman.

We just now need a decent ruckman & a workhorse mid. If Sharp is a workhorse he’d be the one I’d be hoping we grab.

I've only watched Derksen at WAFL level a few times in 2022. He played key forward and while he was very good at reading the play and kicked goals I remember don't remember him being quick or agile at all.

I'm sure if you played Edwards in the VFL you would get similar or potentially better stats.

I'd rather chase Aleer who has a much higher ceiling.
Fair enough.

Not worth a cheap gamble, in your opinion? Aleer already has a few suitors we'd need to outbid contract-wise.

Those numbers just really popped for me. Edwards hasn't put up stats like that in the WAFL, but I suppose he's had few genuinely healthy seasons in the seconds.

The word utility makes me nervous. We've had one too many players with no set position and never really settled on one. Brander, Tunbridge, SPS, Ah Chee etc.
Only exception is you can play one position very well but can play others when required, like Hough playing midfield or Yeo playing defence.
Hopefully guys currently on our list like Maric and Hutchinson can find their best position sooner rather than later.
A utility is a bit like an outside mid - good when your team is nearly built. Blicavs, Embley, Blakey, etc. Remember how frustrated we were at Embley in the early days? It's hard for those guys to play at peak in a shit team.

Which of them will become the 25-35 possession winners consistently though as you have to have two midfielders that work in that type of area to become a good midfield.
I don’t believe that Brockman could get those numbers at WAFL level.
We still need many many midfielders added to the list as we grow.

Also need at least one genuine link up player in the midfield, the outside Gaff/Brad Hill/Holmes/Isaac Smith type

I have a theory and it's just a theory but when you're drafting / developing you basically need 2 of everything you think you need.

That accounts for players not making it, injuries, depth, players being there just for specific roles etc.

Tom Burton is the one I think will rocket up draft boards, Nic Daicos MkII oozes out of him. Like what I've watched. Dominates every week in a very average Jets team. Outshines McGuane, who's going to go Collingwood within twenties. Burton can do it inside and explode to the outside. A MUST.

we would be negligent not to call richmond about blight
OOC I believe, don’t even have to call them. Straight to his manager and PSD (even though I doubt he would cost much in a trade as the ain’t playing him. But with us being a nice club and the Richmond connection we will likely throw our 2nd rd pick at them.

Might be a good time to go try and pry some lesser names out of the swans?
Yep, Sheldrick is the one imo. OOC and finding the ball atm. Getting a run at it in the AFL but see if he holds that spot when Mill, Gulden and Florent to come back.

The 3 ideal candidates for us on a buy low but ready to play are
Blight
Sheldrick
The ruck is the hard one but Liam Reidy could be the best non afl ruck atm

Sheldrick starting to find more of the ball but geez he’s bit of a ball butcher went at 55% disposal efficiency on the weekend.
Duggan was 61% & Cole went at 83%.
These hack kicks and turn overs are killing us.
Think Will Phillips could add something with a fresh start & shouldn’t cost to much.
Hopefully we can add a Rodriguez type who’s a good kick.
Which will add to Hewey & Harley

I don't want Sheldrick. He's shit.

Are we after another B grade mid for 3-4years to help the next gen develop without them having to do the heavy lifting?
Or have we got that in Baker and Graham?
Theirs not much in the RFA/UFA market who would complement, 100+ games and strong mid?

Agreed kicking isn’t his greatest strength but can find it and get a clearance. Not everyone of the 23 players will be elite kicks.

Also a bit different of a hbf being a shocking kicking compared to an inside mid.

Phillips or Sheldrick same same for mine. Which ever one the recruiters think is a better fit. Someone who fits this profile needs to come in.

Just went and looked at some footage, very impressive

He's a butcher and that's a problem. When Yeo is fit, he can provide it. Graham sometimes. I wouldn't mind a Matt Crouch or a SPP on a short term retirement fund contract. But if we're going to go young, let's try to get it right. I'd rather try Dev Robbo who will be cheaper, and I suspect better. If he doesn't cut it, no loss. Also wouldn't mind Hobbs to play that Redden type role. Not sure if he's cheap or not. I just don't want any part of a possession monkey unless they are elite decision makers and accurate with foot. And those guys either cost, or they're probably at the top of the draft.

Will Phillips as an alternate to Sheldrick perhaps as per the links a few weeks ago

Tbh id prefer Phillips as he does the defensive stuff better
