Round 1: 1, 2, 13

List Spots Available (39 of 48):
• Main list (33 of 38) - 5* (in: Starcevich, Young out: Allen, Ryan, Chesser, Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson)

Thats not the bar necessarily. Bar is to find someone better then Flynn/B.Williams. Many options but we choose to give 900k to a small defender who we have ample of.

Cost an arm and a leg is no issue but we spent the arm and spent the leg on a guy we didnt need
Look at the rucks who've actually moved and tell me which ones are better than what we currently have and don't say Reidy, he's a complete shit truck.

So does that mean we are in a quandry as to whether we are going to need these late picks we have for purposes of points or not?

It means we have to work through how best to use the picks we have in relation to the number of open list spots and where we rank our F/S on NGAs on our draft board

With picks 1,2,13,34,38,41,53 and 58 the club has a ridiculous amount of options - combining picks to move up the order, splitting picks to generate multiple picks in the current draft or next years, keeping list spots open past pick 37 so we can bring in our NGAs or use the picks we have to draft the best ranked talent if considered better than our NGAs - keeping in mind if there’s no bid on a NGA we can add them to the Cat B list post draft (if there’s a spot)

The management of list positions is going to be very important once trade period is complete which will then determine how we structure our draft hand.

Plenty out there who would take Starcevichs 900k per year deal and be a better fit.

You think say Erasmus was staying at Dockers if we gave the arm and a leg

Starcevich the deal he is on is more ludicrous then if we just gave that money to Davies/Erasmus so we should have just done that
Is the Freo 7th mid (Ras) better than Brisbane's 8th(Dev)? This is excellent content. Also we get Dev for free as a DFA.

Also 2 players from the B2B premier ramble ramble standards ramble ramble culture ramble leadership.

So now who ever said he's the best of all time?

No-one. And out of interest who do you think is BTW?

And when would we even know? 10 minutes after every trade? Or 10 years later when the true result is known?

The constant negativity and auto default.....wasnt good enough...could do better.....now we cant trade for pick x and a pick swap later we can.

Its lame and immature
Accepting mediocrity is the exact reason we are in this mess.

With the hand Matt Clarke has he has done a very average job.

Because it wasn't a dog shit as last year doesnt mean he's outperformed 17 other list managers.

Looking forward to you awarding him his participation trophy

It seems you expect him to wave his magic wand and we suddenly end up with Gawn, Rowell and Daicos or something.

Basically list spots and available talent.
For sure Barnett would be 1 of the first out if we needed a list spot.
We are guessing mostly but 3 picks in the 1st round in 1, 2, 13 but it will come down to final list spots and who we decide to move to a rookie spot if there is a desired player that we want.

Cripps/Barnett could most likely end up on rookie contracts or if we definitely rate someone very highly Barnett could be paid out and delisted.
If this happens it will be who are the KP/talls left as rucks for backup and WAFL and if Livingstone can be that player?

If this goes down that 1 of Barnett/Livingstone are gone then we would need to draft another KP player to cover.
This is where S Ainsworth would come into the draft calculations as a late pick up or rookie and keep the other player in Barnett/Livingstone as a backup option in the ruck and WAFL imo.
Could rookie someone like Hamish Free. At 27 is the right age profile and at a minimum he would make the Beagles more competitive.

Not sure why people are getting their jimmies so rustled. It has been about as competent a trade period as you could expect after finishing stone motherless last. One quality player traded in, some depth in areas of need traded in. Some picks traded up and in.

We haven’t really overpaid for anyone and we haven’t been underpaid for players that have gone out, as much as people might like to think they could get a first rounder for Liam Ryan at 29.

No, we haven’t reamed every other team in trade week but neither has anyone else. We’ve improved our side and our draft hand, that’s all you can really ask.

Hard to say how he has been this year as the draft hasn't happened and the trade period isnt over yet. I think probably middle of the pack is where I'd rate him atm. The other thing with list management is that its a slow moving process. Needs more than 1/2 off-seasons to circulate and refresh the list. In hindsight last year wasn't too bad, potentially because we nailed the draft. I'm trying to keep that in mind heading into the draft.

Nope, point to once where I expected him to land a big fish? I expect him to outperform expectation, which is the same i would expected of any list manager.

Their job is to negotiate transactions and get the best outcome for the club and it can be assessed individually or sum of the parts. That's what his performance would be judged on.

Just throwing it out there, but maybe most of the other teams actually have reasonably competent list managers as well so breaking even isn't that bad.

So, what are you disappointed in exactly?

The melts are incredible, some over value Ryan and Chesser greatly. I don't think there has been any issues with Clarke, he turned Liam Ryan who really is one hamstring away from hanging up the boots not to mention is lazy and has no defensiveness to his game, into a future second pick which is exactly what he is worth.

Chesser, who everyone has bagged out for years netted us a second round pick, which is exactly what he is worth. I actually think we got overs, I would have handed over a third round pick. He couldn't dominate WAFL, and the small sample size we got this year didn't excite me. He will benefit from having guys like Cripps and Walsh dishing him the ball, so time will tell if he will make it in the AFL BUT NO TEAM is dishing out a decent pick for someone who can't stay fit and has really shown nothing at the big time.

Ruckman.... so tell me what Ruckman wants to come to Perth / play for us? None.... So what do you want Clarke to do?

Jack Steele.... doesn't want to come to Perth and I am glad because by round 8 I would hate coming onto big footy and reading everyone's whinging about how slow he is and how we wasted a an early second round pick.

No good midfielders want to come and play for the wooden spooners. We go to the draft, nail our picks and start winning a couple of games. Start building the winning culture, then we may woo some big names with cash and facilities.
My new hero😍

Find me a ruck willing to move over west to play for the worst team in the league that’s not either just as crap as what we’ve got, ancient, or going to cost an arm and leg
Ladhams was worth a punt. Younger, bigger, better and more versatile than Flynn. Stuck behind Grundy and sounded like he would go anywhere to be the top dog. Would’ve probably needed to cut Livingston and Barnett though, especially if bringing in CDT.

Oh yeah and who were we going to get Petracca or Oliver? Fiorini or Flanders? Don’t like our chances. No realistic midfielders up for trade without giving up a lot. Hopefully we do Young on Monday then wait for pick 1 and 2. Looking forward to seeing who we grab at 1 and 2.
Not landing an established mid is what hurts because that is the area we are desperate for support. Not an A-grader at the peak of their powers, but a Davies, Steele, Simpkin or even Erasmus, Fiorini, Brodie. Guys looking for more opportunity and security. Interesting to hear Clark say we weren’t weren’t keen on Steele and referring to Mini’s game plan. Clearly not interested in old, slow inside mids regardless of leadership and high standards.

So we are now hoping for a midfield diamond in the rough from the state leagues with a couple of our extra rookie spots (Dev, Macrae, Berry, Schoenberg, Blamires etc). Most have already had opportunities on AFL lists so seems unlikely but there’s a chance we fluke a Newcombe or TMac. Hopefully at least get a decent role player or two to provide a competent presence around the ball to help the development of our young mids. Worst case we get some solid WAFL reinforcements.

Operation Chad resumes in 2026

Yeah we would love a good mid but the ones that are out there we aren’t as attractive as a GWS or GC or Cotton On Geelong to convince them after the last 4.5 years of shit is hard. Still hoping for a diamond in the rough or a quality kid coming through. Hoping for a fit Yeo and Hewett and of course No.9 to show a bit this year.

Seen this on FB.

"With the Essendon Board now being involved on agreeing to a Merrett Trade here is a scenario that get Hawthorn and Essendon what they want, with a 3rd club also benefiting..

Essendon get: Pick 1 (WC), Henry Hustwaite and 2026 second round pick (Haw)
Hawthorn Get: Zach Merrett
West Coast Get: Picks 5 & 6 (Ess) and Pick 9 (Haw)

Essendon get a young gun mid plus Pick 1, Hawthorn get their man and West Coast load up on 3 first (as well as holding their Pick 2 still) which they can use to get in experience or get young draftees before Tassie come in

Who says no?"

Are we trading 1 for 5 6 9?

Unless we are 100% in for Duursma then yes.

Hawks paying 9, a F2nd and a fringe player seems unders. More like 9 plus their F1st, Hustwaite and they get a late 2025 2nd back.
