Parking the Allen stuff for a moment...

If you could choose between trading up for GC first pick or trading down to grab Bombers first two picks, which are you choosing?

The former for me. Duursma, Sharp and a slider, even if it's CDT. Think if we put that pairing together at 1 and 2 we can afford to go speculative with the next pick.
Not knowing the intricacies of this draft makes this somewhat moot, but bundling up 17, 24, 38 (1777 points) to Gold Coast for Pick 7 (1543 points) makes too much sense to not do it.

Hitting a draft with 1, 2, 7 is too good of a platform to turn down.

That’s not entirely true again. Both clubs need to trade for Starc. The Lions get nothing for Starc due to Draper joining as a FA already. The Eagles don’t want to dilute the compensation for Allen if it’s band one.

Both clubs “need” to trade.

WC can get Starcevich for nothing.

Starcevich is a free agent. If he joins any club as a free agent, Brisbane get nothing.

Starcevich is out of contract. If he goes into the PSD (where we have pick 1), Brisbane get nothing.

Brisbane just feel entitled to a first round pick because they know an early bid on Annable is coming.

Probably been addressed in the 1000 posts each day, but playing it out in my mind.

We wait out the clock on a Starcevich trade, waiting til FA lodge deadline is over.

Worst case:

Allen only nets Band 2, we match and force a trade.

Brisbane have to give us at least Pick 19 to get Oscar Allen moving, leaving their draft hand (43, 46, 52) woefully inadequate to cover any bids, let alone a bid at Pick 1 or 2.

We can still get Starcevich as an FA if timing allows, either forcing a trade or getting him for free as Lions can’t afford our offer. No worthwhile compo for Brisbane in any case, as they’ve brought Draper in.

Alternatively if the timing doesn’t work by a matter of minutes/hours, Starcevich arrives via draft shenanigans, or we miss out entirely which wouldn’t suit the club so assume it doesn’t come to that.

Really not seeing where Brisbane have any edge here given they’re negotiating against both us and the clock.
This is what we SHOULD do.

What we WILL do, is wait til the 11th hour to present bum to Brisbane and effectively "give" them Allen and Hawks 1st for Starc while hoping we get Pick 2 from the AFL.

We aren’t forcing a trade.

West Coast “need” to trade for Starcevich so as not to dilute the Oscar Allen compensation.

Brisbane are using this situation to our advantage to increase our points pool this draft (and in next year’s draft).

West Coast made their first offer, and we made a counter offer.

Neither club is being a d!ck, both clubs are trying to get the best deal for their club.

One theory on our board is that West Coast’s list manager asked us to start at pick 16, so that when we settle on the compo pick, West Coast fans feel like they got a “win” over the Lions.
Shallow.

Why not both I would do iether or both in a heartbeat

I'm not sold on missing Duursma or Sharp for who might be around in the next tier. Remains to be seen whether WCE view it differently but I suspect they may also see that it's a potential PR nightmare to trade down again.

If we miss out on GCs pick I'm open to being convinced but I'm taking that GC pick and keeping our early picks over packaging up one of the early picks for the Bombers offering.

They will throw Dev in and call it even.

If the Lions want to play hard and win every trade and look after themselves. All good.

We bid early and burn those points they shafted us in getting.
Even Brisbanes list boss never mentioned Dev being required . Ie he isnt offered a contract .

Exactly this

They lose more than us by playing this out to the extremes.

They'll ultimately take 23 because its a bloody good deal for them but making us sweat to try and extract a little more is to be expcected

Lions are aware Allen’s contract is not big enough to warrant pick 2. That’s could be why they haven’t lodged it yet. They probably want to get Hawks R1 or our PP for Starcevich before we find out what Allen’s compo would be. We don’t have to trade for Starcevich if we don’t get pick 2 for Allen, do we?
...and if this is the case and we dilute our comp from a band 2 to band 3 we lose what like 2 picks? Just sit and wait is the best option here.

They have till Friday to lodge the paperwork. I am certain Brisbane will be asking before they lodge it will it trigger Band 1.

The AFL knows we need all the help we can get and this is the perfect way to provide it to us without clubs jumping up and down complaining.

As others have mentioned it's already been accepted we will get band 1 so i can't see why the AFL wouldn't massage it over the line.

It's good for us and them that it happens however under no circumstances should a trade for Starcevich be done before the paperwork is lodged. Agree to terms and once Band 1 is assured finalize the trade.

Totally agree. This is the key. If we trade the PP (for example) for Starcevich then it cancels out any Allen compo that is not pick 2.

Just popped over to the Adelaide board and it seems they are in much the same situation we are with Brisbane posturing for a good pick for Ah Chee. I don't think it's an "Eagles" problem.
It's not quite comparable. They don't have a second round pick, which is what would be needed to get Ah Chee in the door.

Brisbane would want more than 47, and fair enough.

Liam Ryan OUT

Jack Steele, 49 & Max Heath IN

Make it happen.

Steele MUST be on decent coin as Captain. If you take him on it frees more cap space for the Saints. You don't take that on without getting something in return....

He’s not going to any club he’s coming to the Eagles so a trade needs to be done or the Allen compensation is diluted.
Starc to the PSD won’t happen unless the gloves come right off between both clubs and I doubt Starc, Allen and there management teams will allow it to get to that.

He used the same lines last year right before he dropped the baker bomb. We've got the worst negotiator in the comp - trade period is scary.
So how was a first round offer for Barrass turning into a first and 2nd rounder from such a supposed hard core trade negotiator team Hawks have ?

The worst thing about free agency is the bullshit that goes along with the AFL's contrived, manipulated system.

The compo pick should be officially known at the time that the FA paperwork is lodged.
It is nowadays, is it not?

Once they acknowledge formal receipt of it being lodged they say what the compo would be and the club has 72(?) hours to match?

Guys, it's all posturing and opening positions.

Brisbane would accept the compo pick or our second rounder, they know we want to give the Hawks second, so they say they want 16, in the hope that we drop and offer what they want, and they move up from 16.
West Coast has already offered their second round pick (23).

Agreed, he’s way better than Reidy. Just thinking if we were ever going to try and poach a player in an underhanded way, he’s the type given he’d ultimately be cheap, and we could guarantee him footy while the club who has stuffed him around is bringing in more competition for his spot.

Reality is we need to address our rucks with some sort of cheap stop gap at least, and there are very few on offer.
We should have gone hard for ladhams .

Only 27 which is prime for a ruck

204cm big boy so genuine sized ruck stuck behind Grundy but shown he can be very good when number 1 ruck . He also hits the scoreboard and is a very team oriented player although a bit eccentric .

It could have been a reverse hickey who flourished when given number 1 duties

If the lions wanted to make the deals

They should trade Ah Chee and 19 for crows 15 47.

That's 390 point upgrade which is the same as paying pick 33 for Ah Chee.

Ok. 100% discussion in good faith here.
That might be so, but your club's team aren't.

Brisbane's got 2 x Ashcrofts and Fletcher by being hit in the arse by a F/S rainbow in recent years. Then getting Annable this year to add to that while raiding FA left right and center. You're winning by a mile on this. On the back of this the Lions will be thereabouts for a number of years yet.

At the same time, Brisbane is putting the screws on the team that won exactly one game this year, and has won 11 games in the time they've made 3xGF.

Yeah maybe it's time to stop trying to win a bit more? Unless the AFL are being dicks about whether it's Band 1 or not, just lodge the ****ing paperwork for Allen and be done with it.

This what makes no sense to me. They’re digging their heels in over a couple of hundred points to a club that could delete triple that with a click of their fingers. They’re intentionally being arseholes for no other reason than because they can.

The PP didnt exist a week ago and pick 2 still doesn’t. So both teams are playing with house money and it should be very straight forward.
