almost gone in OZ if we’re competent
We sure are lucky in Oz the way it has been handled but unless it is basically eradicated world wide we cannot return to normal life and travel with open borders sadly.

I have been waiting for Nicola to push the keep the codes barrow.

It would not be so bad I they put a chip in the driver's licence or ID card so that each time you enter a premises you scan your licence or State ID card. With a bit of forward thinking the system could be implemented nation wide.

I think Nicola is pushing the proverbial uphill as many people are not bothering with QR codes when we have a pandemic so I do not see them using the codes when there isn't one.

On the vaccine front this is interesting news...

Then there is this...

At one stage they were talking about 66% efficacy then it is 85%. J&J were initially saying their one shot vaccine was not as effective against the South African strain but now they are talking it up. Either way the prospect of a single shot vaccine is a plus.

Twelve months ago the experts doubted we would get a vaccine at all but now we have at least 5 viable alternatives in the western world and about a dozen in use around the globe. Given the squabbling in Europe the world is probably going to need multiple manufacturers of effective vaccines.

A report from the New York Attorney General believes that covid deaths in NY nursing homes may have been undercounted by as much as 50%.

Some say that total covid deaths are over-reported, others say the opposite. A good way to resolve this is by looking at excess deaths. This analysis of deaths in the USA showed that of the 225,530 excess deaths between March to July 2020, covid was the documented cause in only 67% of the cases.

Excess deaths attributed to causes other than COVID-19 could reflect deaths from unrecognized or undocumented infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 or deaths among uninfected patients resulting from disruptions produced by the pandemic

Excess deaths tell you the 'official' covid death figures are understated, and by a large margin.

I don't think it'll ever be wiped from existence. But hopefully a vaccine can push it back to a low enough number of annual cases that allows the world to get back to normal. Keen for stuff like social distancing, better hygiene and staying home when sick to stay though.

No thanks to the bolded, not that anyone does it in shopping centres anyway. That would mean Patron caps on sporting events and concerts remain.

I'm keen on being back in my reserved seat hearing 50k at AO again and hopefully being part of 100k+ should we make another GF soon.

Americans trying to beat the citizens of the United States of America in a race to be the stupidest campaigners on the planet.
Pretty sure they have had that comp wrapped up for a very long time.

Does the "expected deaths" account for the fact that deaths from flu etc are significantly down due to lockdowns? If it doesnt than surely that excess deaths number doubles at minimum.

If employees and arrivals at the medihotels are being tested frequently, and procedures are better/tighter than what they were, and since we've not had community transmission in SA, then why subject the community to compulsory QR scanning along with other restrictions such as crowd capacities in restaurants and sports, etc ..? Why not have these conditions outlined, in place and in readiness to be implemented immediately whenever SA Health/Police sound out a compulsory compliance if a case gets out of hand?

Yep, excess deaths would be higher if not for the big fall in flu deaths. A fall in road deaths due to lockdowns would also push down excess deaths.

Western Australia has been plunged into a five-day lockdown after a confirmed case of COVID-19 went to various locations the community.

WA Premier Mark McGowan held an emergency press conference on Sunday afternoon, saying a male security guard aged in his 20s had been working at Sheraton Four Points in the CBD where there were four active cases, including two of the UK variant and one of the South African mutant strain.
He had tested negative on January 15, 17 and 23 but developed symptoms on Thursday.
“Exactly how the infection was acquired remains under investigation,” Mr McGowan said.
The lockdown applies to the Perth, Peel and South West regions and beings at 6pm WST on Sunday, running until 6pm on Friday.

Dress rehearsal for our weekend there.

Good luck to you Perth peeps hope this is resolved quickly for you all.

That said...

McGowan lying through his teeth and then comes unstuck on a second job question. Arrogant prick.

Has anyone had an update of the South Aussie vax being developed by the local Uni, which relies on "pressure spraying" the skin at the entry site of the arm to apply it, instead of injecting via a needle?
The Federal Govt wouldn't provide them funding, so they were trying to get overseas funded trials undertaken, to measure the efficacy of it, but all has gone quiet.
Maybe waiting to see the results of the test regime first?

5 day lockdown for the whole of Perth and surrounds from 6.00pm this evening due to one worker from a Covid hotel testing positive...

Wife and daughter booked flights and accommodation for a trip to Perth yesterday.
Not leaving until the 16th though, fingers crossed they get this sorted.

I think the the Crows AFLW team played in Perth yesterday does this mean they will have to do two weeks in isolation? ;)

Someone was asking why we still need the QR codes and the phone app...

'The Premier said the infected security guard had used the SafeWA contact register app to record his movements.
The security guard's household members have tested negative this morning, but Mr McGowan said he expected they would test positive in coming days. '

Hopefully this outbreak will show how well the QR tracing system works.

The current Hotel Quarantine system leaks like a ****ing sieve and plugging the holes doesn't seem to fix the problem.

how would we be chipped if that was used? 😂

seriously, how good would that be for those who don’t like needles

finger points the eastern states and now he gets a taste of what it's like himself

further McGowan didn't learn from over east, with the security guard having a second job as an uber driver

Ha ha, I bought some masks a couple of weeks ago - saw them in Woolies when I was looking for something else. I said to the checkout lady that if we had an outbreak here there would be a rush on them, so I may as well get some to stash away. She said "I didn't even know we had them". Bet they haven't got any left now.
