Could some teams do with a bit of re-branding?

I've always thought the national expansion should have gone as follows:

Northern Kangaroos (Gold Coast/North Melbourne merge)
Greater Western Bulldogs
Tassie Devils (Demons move to tassie)

It isn't?

It's what St. generally means in names.

Except there is no Saint named Kilda. The theory seems to go that the 'St' in St Kilda (the island in Scotland) was the result of cartographic errors over the years - it was presumed to be short for 'Saint', but never actually was.

Edit: dammit too slow.

The West Melbourne/North Melbourne merger is an interesting case. West joined the VFA when they were desperate for numbers after the VFL teams split off (1898/99), but had to share Arden St as there was no suitable ground actually in West Melbourne. They won the Flag in 1906 and were generally a strong side, but suffered from a lack of funds, officials and identity despite having a strong playing list. North had the opposite problem, having good finances and structure, but a weaker list. Even if the VFL hadn't come knocking in 1907, all indications are the merger would have gone ahead anyway, and I believe the club was to be called either Melbourne City (a team by this name did enter the VFA in 1912, but generally sucked and only lasted 2 years) or Melbourne United.

West tried to reform after the merged entity was refused entry into the VFL, but it never happened, most people in West Melbourne preferred to support either North or Essendon.

I've said it many times, I wish West Coast would dump all excess colours and to only be Royal Blue and Gold.
With almost 30 years of "West Coast", the name is firmly established and brand strong even if it is geographically vague. More so the reason to identify with their primary colours of the Royal Blue and Gold along with the wings. Many Soccer clubs have strong brand awareness without having Geographically specific names like Juventus, Arsenal, Benfica, Boca Juniors thus their kit becomes paramount in their distinguishable identity and West Coast needs to do the same.

I've mentioned this before and I think you're on the same track here without realising it.

There is another club with the name 'West' in it's name and their colours are also predominantly royal blue. Both West Coast for the Eagles, and Western for the Bulldogs can be a bit vague generally.

I don't think the fact that WCE changed their main kit and base colour not too long after Footscray became Western Bulldogs is merely a coincidence. The Eagles will say it was a rebrand for the new millennium but I reckon it was also a concerted effort at a rebrand by WCE to differentiate it from the Bulldogs.

It's gold!!!

That's the problem with 99% of Hawthorn supporters. Mention the colour yellow and they jump up and down correcting people.
Maybe it's because yellow means timid, maybe it's because of the toilet jokes, or maybe because of them once being branded the "pretty boys" of the AFL.
I notice each year the clash jumper gets less and less gold/yellow/orange in it.
I reckon Hawthorn should bite the bullet and get rid of the "gold" from their colours just like St Kilda did all those years ago.
Freo got rid of the green from their colours, Port are trying to get rid of the teal from their colours, I think it's time for Hawthorn to consider doing the same.

But the "yellow" is the better of their 2 colours.

Or, perhaps, it's taken from the 12th Man, and we don't give a rats arse what colour people think it is

Didn't South Melbourne move to Sydney in 1982?
How were they known as Sydney Swans in 1977?
The wording under the nickname clearly says "Sth Melbourne Football Club". They were always known as the Swans, a football writer suggested it because of the number of Western Australian recruits the club brought over in the 1930s.

They'd moved on from royal blue before the Dogs changed their name.

Just did thanks for the tip but it all came back as the same as when I did Extractive Metallurgy as being a metal
Oh well… One day you might discover that gold is also a variant of the colour yellow.
I'm sure of you typed "gold" into wikipedia, you might find some examples.

Perhaps it's something which pre-dates modern digital printing.

The Brisbane Lions also sing about wearing maroon, blue and gold

Australian athletes wear the GREEN and GOLD, for f**k's sake
I've never heard anyone say our colours are green and yellow.'
I've never seen anyone with metallic gold swimming caps or tracksuits

What is written on the Blue bar?

To a lesser extent, change "bulldogs" to just "dogs". That way they broaden their appeal imo, instead of having a ******* bulldog which has stuff-all appeal for christ's sake. West Melbourne Dogs.

I love it! I love where this is heading. I think Gold Coast should be "general celestial bodies", Hawks could go with species bird or something.

Melbourne might as well go back to being fuchsias for a bit - they need to try something
