Not sure why governments aren’t stepping in about the panic buying

The main shopping chains are doing all they can, not sure what you want the government to do about it?

Some of the comments in this thread......

The reason for the precautions is to slow the spread. That allows hospitals to manage the flow of patients. So they can treat them all.

In Italy they failed to slow the spread and are now walking down queues outside hospitals identifying those that are too old to bother treating and sending them away.

They could easily mandate purchase limits and fines for non compliance,
The chain stores are doing that. The major grocery retailers have all introduced buying limits and I personally have seen them enforced.
I don't believe it's the governments place to tell the supermarkets how to conduct their businesses, as far as I am aware we still live in a democratic society, not twentieth century communist China.

How? There’s limits already do you want people with guns at the checkouts

We have to do what we must but at the end of it, assuming I’m still alive, I’m sending the Chinese embassy a message:

STOP EATING STRANGE ANIMALS!!!!!

Yep I hope when the dust settles the world remembers this started with batshit China (no pun intended) - their love (and disgusting mistreatment) of wild animals in the market trade, and their government's corruption that gave them no chance to stop the virus in it's earliest stages.

Richmond are in favour of the season going ahead, so the season will go ahead.

Unless Hawthorn or Collingwood oppose it, in which case the AFL has a serious moral dilemma

I think the players are not going to want to

Like Whateley said it's crazy to think that while the rest of the world is shutting down, the AFL will be ramping up. It's delusional, and it's arrogant.

Ramping up is pushing it. They are just trying to play a round or two before a hiatus whether it’s feasible who knows though.

NBL, A league, NRL, cricket have all tried to continue. What is arrogant about allowing the game to continue?

They can’t win either. Either way they are bagged.

Basically the Aussie sports seem to be in a no win situation. Damned if you do, damned if you dont.

Pretty much. I give them credit for at least looking at a range of alternatives.

It's arrogant that in a time when social distancing needs to be the absolute priority, the AFL think their contact sport that involves saliva and sweat should be exempt from that rule.

Plus our game involves handballing lol

I am now leaning more towards hoping they just cancel the season.

Imagine if a Martin or Buddy had one of their freak games and there was no crowd there. I am not one for caring about atmosphere at the footy, in fact I love the NEAFL and practice matches etc because of the grassroots vibe at those games. But there will inevitably be moments this season that should go down in footy folklore, but won't, because they will just fall flat and not have the same effect without a crowd reaction.

Imagine if a key player like Heeney or Rampe or Aliir did a serious knee injury that then seriously impacted their 2021 seasons, and what for? So they could play a game or two in March/April that ultimately count for nothing when a fork is stuck in the season?

Imagine whichever team wins the flag having a permanent asterisk next to their title when they win the most compromised season in AFL history.

They're just the sentimental reasons it just wouldn't work. That's not even getting into the logistical side of things, or, on a far more serious front, the health and safety side of things.

I'm sure clubs would be able to find a way to keep their players fit and simulate the lifestyle of playing a match for 3 hours every 6-8 days across the months of April to September. Time to see what these sports scientists are being paid for.

AFL should just call it now. Yes it will ******* suck not having footy for another 365 days but it will be worth it when we come back to a clean slate rather than the shit-show I reckon it would be if they allow this season to be compromised.
With the history of Coronaviruses being hit quick lose their strength and peter out I don't think it will be necessary to cancel the season. This virus does not act like SARS or MERS but the fact is the warmer the weather the slower the spread. If COVID 19 follows the path of every other Coronavirus it will simply disappear quite soon. As the North goes into Summer and if the South stays reasonably warm through April the chances are it will disappear.
