COVID chaos! WA border threatens entire AFL fixture

The answer is obviously the w.a teams need to move to a hub again

Then let us both please have 7 in a row at home like the 2019 season for Richmond with no Covid
So how many did you play at home in a row in 2020 or don’t they count?

Easy solution:

1) Move the Fremantle V GWS to the weekend before round 1 on a stand alone Saturday night game. That way Freo get a Perth game early in the season.
2) Play the WC v GC Suns game in Perth as scheduled and then the WA teams relocate to the state of their choice until McGowan stops his paranoia over a slight sniffle.

The AFL can’t be held hostage by an over the top politician.

Public health is more important than footy, so yes I'm fine if no games are held in Perth if it means staying safe and healthy.

I know the stats. NSW has far more cases and, obviously, far more deaths. They have also been more affected by lockdowns and restrictions than we have. Not sure what point you're trying to make there, we have it good in Perth. Seems the only people sooking it up are entitled Victorians who think public health should be put at risk so they can travel

How many deaths since April last year ?

And how many non COVID deaths in that time ?

Hardly the point. The WA government has the right to decide the amount of risk for WA to carry.
And it is far better to be too cautious, which right now they probably are, than err in the opposite direction.

Why is it far better?

Isnt it farbetter to be appropriately cautious?

Otherwise its just pandering to stupid people.

Do you also agree that you play only 10 of your 11 home games at your home ground, and one home game at the opposition's home ground or on a "neutral ground" played on far more by your opposition like Richmond has to? You also lose you Darby every year
So you would play 10 home games in Perth. An away game against Fremantle every 3 or so years and a home game, say, in Adelaide against Port?
So you'd get 3 games in Perth for the first 16 rounds, and then 7 straight home games.
Of course some of Richmond's home games in their run of 7 were neutral, so you'd have a much bigger advantage over what Richmond did in 2019. But it's a start.
You happy to lock that in whinger?
Please lock in 7 in a row at Optus leading into the 2021 finals like Richmond was spoon fed in 2019

The finger pointing from both 'sides' of this probably isn't necessary. WA can do as they please with their borders to protect their own interests.

As for Freo and West Coast, if the hosting venues can accommodate it, WCE could play the Suns at Optus as planned Rd 1 and the GWS-Freo game could be moved forward a week, given the Dockers should be able to fly in and out of NSW. A Rd 2 Western Derby could take place, with the matches that were scheduled to take place shifted to the weekend the Derby was supposed to occur.

Outside of that, the two WA sides may have to hub from Rd 2 (or 3 if you want to fiddle more to get Freo an early home game) onwards if nothing changes with their border. Somewhere central to the Eastern sides like Canberra (Manuka) or maybe back in QLD? Sucks for the WA teams again but I don't see what other option there is.

Not a gift leading into the finals like 2019 Richmond was. Also 2020 was a Covid affected fixture unlike 2019
So wet toast getting seven in a row at home is no benefit......what about that home final when you guys locked the opposition in a hotel room for a week and still choked

Must every thread on the board be filled with WA whinging? They won the flag last year without any of that.
They can’t even win a home final against a team that was locked up in a hotel room for a week , but it’s still blah blah blah Richmond , #VICBIAS blah blah blah

There's no "threat" to the fixture. You lock up borders to protect public health. It's been proven to work during a time where we're all making it up as we go along. Sport doesn't mean s**t, and WC home games mean even less. The first nine cricket World cups were all won by the away side, and every international sporting comp involves every team but one playing all their games away. Ten AFL teams last year played nearly all of their games away, and two of them played off in the GF after an extended period on the road. They're all getting paid, they'll be fine...

NSW has all that without hiding away from the rest of the country.

So should politicians always pander to the stupid desires of voters? Or should they be leaders and make the right decisions rather than the easy ones?

Youre ok if you get no AFL games in Perth this year if any other states has a single case which sees your borders shut again?

Do you actually know what youre afraid of? Have you looked at NSW's stats ?

Or is it just "in Mark we trust" ?

You say that NSW didn’t lock down, but they did cancel an international sporting event, the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. A fair bit of money tied up in that event.

NSW did not get through unscathed.

Serious question here.

WA has been very cautious, “closing” it’s doors to different states during the last 12 months. The economy is going pretty well, with overseas tourism down, but the local tourists boosting the tourist hot spots ( money not exiting to Bali & Thailand ). So things are going well, everyone feels healthy with a positive outlook.

In comparison, how do Victorians feel at the moment ?. How’s their economy, mental health and outlook for the future ?.

Cautious versus lockdown.

Also, please read the article quoted at the start of this thread. It actually says everything is falling into place for the season to start as normal.

The comment about being “anti east”, is not really how the person in the street sees it, they are just happy to wander around with no restrictions. The “anti east” thing is only brought up in the political arena.

Bullshit, the politicians may be the ones starting the conversation, but once it's started, the locals pile on thick and fast.

Yay WA!

Nobody has died in WA at all since the border was locked down. Not a single person.

...and nobody has brought the virus into the state from any other state or territory since April last year despite over 100,000 exemptions being granted, everything has been coming from international, planes and ships.
