Just watching the last 2 minutes of the Showdown again and it got me wondering. Did the Port crowd noise impact the result?

Normally in that situation McGovern would have called Douglas out and taken an easy chest mark.

Did Douglas panic? Was McGovern just not used to being in defence so didn't call?

Or did the crowd noise blur out the Crows communication and help contribute to the goal?

Who knows but I'd like to think it did.

It was the game itself that caused the silly defending. As we closed in on their score their defenders got extremely nervous and it only got worse from there. The scoreboard pressure is what made them do silly shit. Not much else.

The crowd was as nervous as the players from about half way through the last onwards lol. I don't reckon that would have helped.

It had the opposite effect on Boak. I think he fell asleep mid possession. Wowee his mind is slow these days.

I'm not sure it made any difference in that particular moment. I think it was a case of Douglas not used to being the spare man and feeling like he had to go

From the moment Robbie kicked his first goal in the 3rd I didn't stop chanting and yelling like a mad man trying to spur on the crowd around me to make some noise & even if it just got a number the closer we got the louder the crowd was.

Was one of the loudest showdowns i've ever been to & the classic finish made it one of the most enjoyable.

It was pretty quiet first half (a part from the groans)

Port supporters were flat and Crows supporters weren't brave enough to cheer yet.

The last half was LOUD though

The only Crows' home games I attend these days are our away Showdowns and even with the amplified crowd noise pumped through the PA system they are nowhere near as noisy as our games. Crows' players are certainly not used to dealing with that level of crowd noise.

They should be after all those Richmond goals in last years granny.

That tiger mob are ****ing loud.

It would have contributed, sure.

I think the fact that Douglas' finger clipped the ball steals away a bit from Neade's fantastic positioning in the contest - McGovern wasn't ever going to mark that ball anyway.

Once the ball hit the ground, McGovern was probably the only crow in the area with a cool head, but he was laid out pretending to be injured to win a free kick and Mackay, Douglas, Atkins and Gallucci crapped themselves and all ran off their players and in to no-mans-land to smother fresh air while SGary and Mots remained calm but intense leading to the goal.

The noise, the pressure of the incoming ball after 3 extremely intense minutes of play, the fact that none of the crows players at the contest are defensively minded, and some good old fashioned good luck all would have played a part.

Not sure about that specific incident but our record in home Showdowns is so far superior to our record in away Showdowns that home crowds certainly do make all the difference in these games.
Don't know if so far superior are the right words.

We are 13-9 in home show downs, 9-12 in away showdowns and 0-1 in neutral finals showdowns to be 22-22 all up.

There is a slight advantage playing in front of a home crowd. I reckon there are less Port people at away showdowns at AO compared to Footy Park. We are 1-3 for away showdowns at AO and 2-3 at home. The superior home record was at Footy Park 11-6.

If you look at the 13 games that have been won by single digits where its 7-6 in favour of Port, the 7 wins have been 5 home -2 away games and the 6 losses 4 home - 2 away games.

Of the games won by 10-19 pts its 6-3. Of the wins 4 home games -2 away. Of the loses its 2 home - 1 away.

The shellackings happen at away games of the 7 losses at 50 pts or more and ignoring the 2005 SF loss, 6 of these games have been away games and only 1 a home game in 2012 Rd 15 when we were terrible.

We have only belted the crows by 50+ pts twice. Rd3 2001 by 65pts an away showdown and its why its one of my favourite showdowns watching on the box as it showed our kids had arrived, and first game at the new AO we won by 54 pts and a bit more straight kicking early on it could have been 75 pts or more.

Yeah this is the most logical explanation for me. 30 seconds left, 1 point up in a showdown. You have to make a contest nomatter what, we were just lucky that their players collided while ours were super clean.

The slick handball from Sammy Gray was phenomenal.

The finish from Motlop was reminiscent of LeBron in the series against the raptors.

Execution is always our biggest problem but my god they stood up when it mattered and did the job.

When Stefon Diggs scored the winning TD in the NFL playoffs last season, they released a video of the sideline view, with only the crowd noise.

If possible, Port should try and acquire something like that, it really adds to the highlight reel. Especially for an interstate fan like myself, I find it awesome to listen to

The best run we had was between 2001 - 2004 where we won 6 out of 7 showdowns at a time where as a team we were kicking ass and taking names (and Josh Carr was playing for us). 3 were home games. Somewhat surprisingly though in 2007 we lost both in a year when we finished 2nd.

As for Crowd noise I'd love to think the spine tingling roar of the crowd does make a difference, statistically I'm not sure it bears out. It would be interesting to see home vs away wins for all teams to see. Obviously distance traveled to the game makes a difference. Traditionally WCE and Fremantle don't travel well. But then one could ask whether a 3 hour flight should make much more difference than a one hour flight in terms of performance.

It may well make a difference to how well players can hear each other, given that on one occasion the umpires couldn't hear the siren.

What couldn't be argued is that a win with crowd noise like that must remind the boys how many fans are behind them and how passionate they are. Hopefully this is something that sticks for future games.
