Danny Stanley Offical Draft Bust

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

The 21st Pick in the 2005 Draft after we got Daisy and Pendles at Pick 2 and 5. Stanley had Big Wraps and was even thought he had Dropped in the Draft to us. He was a Big Bodied Inside Midfidler who was the Replace Burns.

But he was Slow and Poor Kicking Skills that cost him in the AFL

Who else agrees he is a Bust now he has been De-Listed?

This is where the hole in our list is. Neither Stanley nor Cook (pick 23 in 2005) have shown that they could make it at AFL level.

We just needed one of them to come on and be a best 22 player.

One of Hine's few genuine downfalls was not managing to find quality with two picks in the 20's of this draft.

Considering the draft was pretty poor outside the top round in general, it wasn't like he overlooked a heap of quality, and he scored JA late as well.

I had hopes for Danny as well :( Sigh

Welcome back Dave The Man.:thumbsu:

Hes a total bust alright. Ryan Cook very close to the same also.

Its worth remembering that wasnt a strong draft year so having high expectations of any player in the group post about 12 was doing so without realising the quality of the draft.

notwithstanding, lets all show a bit more respect to a bloke thats delisted......this has all the hallmarks of 'dancing on a grave' which aint real cool.

Agreed. And you can't knock Stanley for effort. He could've sooked when the writing was on the wall, but was exceptional all year in VFL.

You win some, you lose some. Im sure there has been alot worse drafting going on over the years. Richmond are champions at this, you only need to look at their recent record over the last fer years.
We got two decent players early that year and they are doing ok. You dont really expect to get more than that in the same drafting year. It would be good if every pick was a gem, but it wasnt to be the case.

Definitely a bust. There was some serious quality taken after him.

Bernie Vince.
Sam Gilbert.
Andrew Swallow.

And a few others that look alright:

Robbie Warnock.
Alipate Carlile.
Beau Muston.
Ben McKinley.
Sam Lonergan.

We also picked up Iles instead of Porplyzia in the pre-season draft.

But you can't win them all. Pendlebury, Thomas and Anthony [and Toovey as a rookie] is still a great draft.

To be fair to Danny, I don't really think he was given enough opportunity at AFL level in his preferred position. Hard to develop at the elite level if you only have limited opportunities.

That said, obviously had some skill issues and the selection committee probably couldn't see where he would fit in the side, esp in that 13 week period where the team was hitting top form.

There was reasons why he did not get a Game and if they though he could he would of stayed on the list like Cook

feel sorry for Danny he never got a fair crack and everytime he got a game it was because we had alot of injuries and he always got played out of position. Just take the saints game this year he played as a forward when we didn't have our whole forward line how's he supposed to run the forward line when he's a midfielder. I thought he got a rough deal from Mick it just would've been nice to see him get a game when we had a decent team in I think he would've shown he wasn't as bad as we all thought but it's too late now just hope cook gets the arse next year he's worse then Stanley he's kicking is terrible.

What did stanley actually show in any senior game taht suggested he would do any better as midfielder?

Look at McCarthy for instance he has played most of his senior games as a HFF like Danny but looked that much better it wasnt funny and even managed to show his traits as a hard mid.

Danny just isnt up to it, i was on the bandwagon early this year and made sure i watched his VFL games closely. He dominated the VFL because he was that much bigger and stronger, he isnt that much bigger and stronger in the AFL so his flaws (foot speed, decision making, foot skills) were apparent for all to see.

He probably should have turned into a 3rd tall forward or back ala dean soloman as soon as he was drafted, it didnt happen. This year we tried t see if he could do it in the VFL (much to the derison of the anti MM stanners is a gun crowd) and he still had the same flaws.

Good bye and good luck danny, you tried bloody hard and you cant begrudge you that

Cook is a bit different. He has foot speed, endurance and gets the ball (not that you can tell at his best you just dont see his possessions due to lack of hurt). Stanley had none of these things

I might add this post does not mean i rate cook

Plus 1 to the 'not rating cook' club. Got saved by his MVP vfl season. From the games I watched he'll never be anything. Hope he proves me wrong. I'd rather have kept Stanley or delisted both.

I hope Stanley gets a chance elsewhere. He isn't the worst.

Dammed by faint praise.

Thought Stanley was a trad over-rated on this board, but I would certainly have kept him over Cook, but then again he was never going to dislodge Obree or keep games out of Beams and Sidebottom. Could still be handy for someone.

Wow How SHIT He Looks. Cant see any talent there. Slow etc.

The talent on our list is way better than him
Go Pies!

I think when he was Drafted, they like how he competed and his Inside Work but he had to Many other Flaws

Stanley had one game out of 5 as a forward, and that was Round 8 vs the Saints when our entire forward line was out and we got pumped by 88 points.

Apart from that, he played in defence - usually on a dangerous opponent. eg. Debut he gets sent to Russell Robertson of all people, has 7 kicked on him and people think he's hopeless.

I don't overrate him or even rate him, I just would have liked to see him given a genuine opportunity.

Our midfield would be elite with Vince in it. Hindsight is wonderful.

Yeah I know imagine having Vince along with Swan , Pendles , Beams , Sidebottom and even Leon and Dids :D geez that would look good but you can't get every pick right unfortunately :(

Yeah bad luck for the kid, but thankfully there's no room for sentiment, if you ain't going to help us win a flag, you're out. Cook is very lucky. Probably saved by the fact he's played a few ok AFL games.
