Danny Stanley Offical Draft Bust

feel sorry for Danny he never got a fair crack and everytime he got a game it was because we had alot of injuries and he always got played out of position. Just take the saints game this year he played as a forward when we didn't have our whole forward line how's he supposed to run the forward line when he's a midfielder. I thought he got a rough deal from Mick it just would've been nice to see him get a game when we had a decent team in I think he would've shown he wasn't as bad as we all thought but it's too late now just hope cook gets the arse next year he's worse then Stanley he's kicking is terrible.
Invest in some full stops mate:rolleyes:

Stanley had one game out of 5 as a forward, and that was Round 8 vs the Saints when our entire forward line was out and we got pumped by 88 points.

Apart from that, he played in defence - usually on a dangerous opponent. eg. Debut he gets sent to Russell Robertson of all people, has 7 kicked on him and people think he's hopeless.
Robbo kicked 7 for the day, but at most 2 of those were kicked on Stanley.

IIRC he wasn't even prepped to play on Robbo, he was sent to him as you said after Harry O injured a shoulder in the early minutes of the match.

But you can't win them all. Pendlebury, Thomas and Anthony [and Toovey as a rookie] is still a great draft.
No you can’t but you have to win more than everyone else to win premierships. You therefore need to set the bar high. Our recent drafting has been much better than our historical poor results but we still haven’t got the best list so it still isn’t good enough. That is the only test. My issues with taking Stanley are that he had flaws in an AFL makeup (pace and skill) and that we then kept him too long. I have been saying for a few years that we should have cut deeper and turned over more players. One more O’Brien from a rookie or late pick makes a big difference. Unearth a Deane Cox like West Coast did and maybe we could have traded for Ball or even Fevola.

One or two players can make a big difference in a controlled player market.

For a couple of years I was a Stanley fan, but alas, it was not to be. We need someone tough in the middle, but Stanners was caught time and again a half a step behind the game. I hope someone picks him up so we can see what might or might not have been.

I do know officially from club sources that the problem with Danny as they foresaw was not so much a lack of pace or skill but that he was a slow decison maker. He tended to get away with it in the VFL because of his brute strength i.e. if he held the ball too long he could still shake off the less physically imposing VFL level players.

I think he has some attributes to be a good player if given the opportunity which he never really got with the Pies. I hope that a club gives him a second chance.

I think the writing was on the wall for him this year with the emergence of Beams, Sidebottom and McCarthy who all look very promising.

I agree with this post and the clubs views.

I remember in the Saints game when he got the ball and just stood there as he got tackled, which the commentators made note of. He would never have done that in the VFL!

He is probably the type of player that needs plenty of game time to get used to AFL and build up confidence at that level. But, as you said, we have better and younger prospects who have all shown more and would have prevented him getting a game next year.

Very Good Post and Good to hear a Reason behind the De-Listings.

We don't have the Time for Stanley to get use to AFL Level

I don't want to kick a man while he is down but it was the right choice. To many younger players on the list that are better players eg Beams & Sidebottom to only name a couple. Cook should be delisted as well no talent rather try our luck with another young player.
