2009 Phantom Draft – Dima17

#1 – Melbourne
Tom Scully (Vic)
Height: 182cm, Weight: 74kg, Recruited from: Dandenong Stingrays
This kid’s the best in the land, and obvious choice at Priority Pick #1.

#2 – Melbourne
Jack Trengove (SA)
Height: 185cm, Weight: 82kg, Recruited from: Sturt
There have been calls for him to be taken with #1, but it won’t matter, he will be at Melbourne next year.

#3 – Richmond
Dustin Martin (VIC)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 86kg, Recruited from: Bendigo Pioneers
Gun Midfielder. He is a hard body and a super leader. He is one to look out for in the future. Certainty at #3.

#4 – Fremantle
Anthony Morabito (WA)
Height: 190cm, Weight: 90kg, Recruited from: Peel Thunder
Athletic freak. He is a home grown WA boy and chances are the Dockers will snap him up and add to the likes of Palmer, Hill, Deboer, etc. Frequently likened to Adam Goodes. He has a terrific grab, and natural ability.

#5 – North Melbourne
Ben Cunnington (VIC)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 84kg, Recruited from: Geelong Falcons
This kid is an ultra professional. He looks after his body, and has done everything right to give himself the best possible chance to go high in the draft. He is a super athlete and a tough body – Scott will love him.

#6 – Sydney
Gary Rohan (VIC)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 79kg, Recruited from: Geelong Falcons
I rate this kid BIGTIME. His pace is elite and he will be a name to remember for the future. Sydney will take him as he is the next best IMO.

#7 – West Coast
Lewis Jetta (WA)
Height: 178cm, Weight: 72kg, Recruited from: Peel Thunder
Looks to staying at home with Pick #7. Being a mature age, expect an impact form him in 2010.

#8 – Port Adelaide
John Butcher (VIC)
Height: 197cm, Weight: 84kg, Recruited from: Maffra
He is without question the best KPP based on form. He is a certainty to go top 10 and I believe that the Power will not pass him up. He is still very raw and skinny, but he will be one to look out for.

#9 – Port Adelaide
Luke Tapscott (SA)
Height: 180cm, Weight: 86kg, Recruited from: North Adelaide
Hard bodied Mid/Fwd who will be ready for action in 2010. He is a super kick and is able to have a string presence in the air and on ground level. Very similar player to Paul Chapman.

#10 – Essendon
Kane Lucas (WA)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 79kg, Recruited from: East Fremantle
Bombers would jump at Kane with Pick #10. He is exactly what they need and he will add a new dimension to their already young and growing midfield. Future Star.

#11 – Melbourne
Daniel Talia (VIC)
Height: 194cm, Weight: 89kg, Recruited from: Calder Cannons
This kid is a super CHB and has a great ability to rebound and hurt you. Despite this, I think he will play forward in the future as he is similarly wired to Nick Riewoldt. He will partner Watts perfectly.

#12 – Carlton
Aaron Black (WA)
Height: 193cm, Weight: 78kg, Recruited from: Peel Thunder
Now that Carlton has lost Fev to the Lions and Bradshaw to Sydney, a tall is probably on the radar. Black is a powerful KPP and he will suit Carlton’s needs to a tee.

#13 – Adelaide
Koby Stevens (VIC)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 83kg, Recruited from: Lucknow
Bit of a surprise at pick 13, but he is a gun midfielder who has played well at State level as well as TAC level. His height (187cm) makes him a perfect choice to fit into the current modern day game and he suits the Crows style.

#14 – Sydney
Jake Melksham (VIC)
Height: 182cm, Weight: 69kg, Recruited from:pEGS
Great user, classy skills and ball magnet. Had a great draft camp also which will rocket him up the order. IMO if he is available, Sydney will not pass on him with Pick #14.

#15 – Western Bulldogs
Andrew Moore (VIC)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 81kg, Recruited from: Yarra Valley Grammar
Top 10 Midfielder, who is suited to the Bulldogs style of play. He will prosper with the likes of Cooney, Cross, Boyd, etc. showing him the ropes.

#16 – Port Adelaide
Nathan Vardy (VIC)
Height: 198cm, Weight: 89kg, Recruited from: Gippsland Power
Best ruckman in the draft. With the retirement of Lade and Brogan not getting any younger, this to me seems like a good choice. Next year it will be hard to snare a decent ruckman with the new draft system.

#17 - Geelong
Bradley Sheppard (WA)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 78kg, Recruited from: Wesley College
Tough kid with super footy brain. He will fit in nicely with the rest of Geelong’s crop.

#18 - Melbourne
Jake Carlisle (VIC)
Height: 196cm, Weight: 83kg, Recruited from: Craigieburn
With Melbourne adding to their midfield through Scully and Trengove, I think they will try and grab a KPP/Ruckman for future depth. Carlisle has a solid season and showed plenty of promise. Good Pick.

#19 – Richmond
Mitchell Duncan (WA)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 81kg, Recruited from: Trinity College
Medium Forward who will add a different dimension to the Tigers young forward line (Riewoldt, Morton). Also, with Brown and Pettifer (former medium forwards) done, this seems a good choice.

#20 – Fremantle
Ben Griffiths (VIC)
Height: 198cm, Weight: 99kg, Recruited from: Eastern Rangers
Love this kid as a KPP. He is very Injury prone; however he probably would have gone Top 10 if he didn’t get injured this year. Big Boy who will fit in nicely with the other Dockers kids in the future.

#21 – North Melbourne
Troy Taylor (NT)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 75kg, Recruited from: South Alice Springs
RAW talent. This kid may have the most upside of anyone in the draft. I think he will be a real bolter and North may use him as a 3rd tall in years to come.

#22 – West Coast
Travis Colyer (WA)
Height: 175cm, Weight: 73kg, Recruited from: Trinity College
He will as pace to young Eagles midfield, which is something every club needs. Travis can also play up forward, which is handy. Had a good Draft Camp and I think he will stay in WA with this Pick.

#23 – West Coast
Nat Fyfe (WA)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 73kg, Recruited from: Aquinas College
Classy Kid with a light frame. He reminds me of Stephen Hill from last year’s draft (body type). He is very clever and will be moulded as a HF/WING.

#24 – Essendon
Allen Christensen (VIC)
Height: 176cm, Weight: 75kg, Recruited from: Lara
Geelong boy who is a slider in my draft. He is a freak at racking up possessions; however his disposal sometimes hurts him. If he is around at this pick the dons will get him.

#25 – North Melbourne
Josh Thomas (QLD)
Height: 178cm, Weight: 70kg, Recruited from: Broadbeach
Josh will be a surprise bolter IMO. Talk has been that he will be at the pies in 2010; however I think the Roos may snare him with this pick. Classy mid from same club as Dayne Beams. Likened to a Trent Cotchin (style of player).

#26 – Essendon
Jack Fitzpatrick (VIC)
Height: 201cm, Weight: 85kg, Recruited from: Whyndhamvale
I think the Bombers will get a tall with this pick, only because the drafts to follow will be compromised. He will help Hille/Ryder in the ruck and play at FF/CHF in the future – Similar to Koschitzke. Lots of potential. Good Pick.

#27 – Brisbane
Ryan Bastinac (VIC)
Height: 183cm, Weight: 74kg, Recruited from: Rowville
There has been talk that Bartlett may be taken with this pick, but I think Ryan is suited to the Lions style of play.

#28 – Geelong
Mark Hutchings (WA)
Height: 180cm, Weight: 82kg, Recruited from: East Perth
Hard Midfielder who can also play as a Defender. He is probably the most obvious tagger in this draft and with Ling getting old he could come into calculations.

#29 – Adelaide
Matthew Panos (SA)
Height: 192cm, Weight: 85kg, Recruited from: Norwood
Local Boy who suits crows needs. They got a Mid with their first Pick, so I expect them to go a KPP with #29. Panos is an obvious choice.

#30 – Collingwood
Jordan Gysberts (VIC)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 83kg, Recruited from: Yarra Valley Grammar
The Pies will be stoked if Jordan slips to Pick 30. Jordan is a modern day midfielder, who had a solid TAC year. He worked closely with Bucks at the AIS so I think that if he is available, the Pies will probably take him.

#31 – Western Bulldogs
Sam Reid (VIC)
Height: 192cm, Weight: 84kg, Recruited from: Murray Bushrangers
Brother of Ben (Pies), Sam has had a consistent year, and looks to be a good investment for any club. With the Dogs talls getting on in age, I think Reid may find himself at the Kennel next year.

#32 – St.Kilda
Jessie Crichton (TAS)
Height: 183cm, Weight: 66kg, Recruited from: North Launceston
Lightly built player, however he has a ferocious attack on the ball. Similar to Mitch Robinson (Blues).

#33 - Essendon
Max Gawn (VIC)
Height: 206cm, Weight: 87kg, Recruited from: Sandringham
Mammoth Ruckman who will give the Bombers depth in the Ruck Department. I see this kid as a true Ruckman, whereas Fitzpatrick will probably play more forward.

Your Thoughts???

Like the Draft, except you've got Essendon taking 2 ruckmen (Fitzpatrick and Gawn)

Can Possibly see Essendon taking 1 ruckmen, but not 2.

Although I like Lucas and Christenson.

I just think that with Hille getting Old, and your other ruckman not really progressing as you hoped, two talls would be possibility. THis would free fryder to play CHB maybe. Even if ryder plays ruck, i see Fitzpatrick playing forward, like Kozitchke.

bit biased that gysberts made it to collingwood? also i dont think essendon would choose fitzpatrick ahead of bastinac and gysberts. Also wondering where bartlett is?

dont think our ruckmen are doing to badly hille is about 28. cant put to much pressure on bellchambers hes only 19 and in his 2nd year ruckmen take a bit b4 they come on then theirs ryder. Also bock on the rookie list.

apart from a biased pick and essendon picking to rucks espicially at 26 where we would definatly go for another mid i believe or medium forward or back its fair good.

just re-read your reasoning for essendon taking fitzpatrick and now even more annoyed why do essendon need to get another forward with still, neagle, gumbleton, hurley, ryder and hille resting up their also with williams and monfries we have enough forwards.

just re-read your reasoning for essendon taking fitzpatrick and now even more annoyed why do essendon need to get another forward with still, neagle, gumbleton, hurley, ryder and hille resting up their also with williams and monfries we have enough forwards.

here's my opinion/reasoning:

1. Hille will be too old by the time fitzpatrick is able to hold down a position.
2. Ryder is not suited to being a FWD, he is a ruckman or a backman (CHB)
3. Neagle is too one dimensional for essendon to rely on as a KP fwd. he is more of a third tall/option.
4. Hurley could play anywhere, but i think he is naturally a backman and i see him being more valuable in defence that in the forward line. After all he was rafted as an All Australian u18 Full BAck.
5. Gumbelton will be a super player if he gets his body right - no question.
6. Williams/Monfries etc. are medium forwards.

so... i see gumbleton and neagle being your only real tall options in your forward line in a few years time (hurley down back, ryder ruck, hille too old). All im saying is that depth will be hard to come by in coming years as the draft will be comprimised. Its my opinion - dont shoot me over it!

Duncan I tend to think perhaps a bit high, I think Richmond at 19 will be more interested in a big... ala.. Fitzpatrick/ Griffiths.

27 is WAY too low for Bastinac. Will be surprised if he goes past pick 21.

Panos is no chance at finding his way to Adelaide. They have a very settled forwardline in which Taylor Walker can't even find his way into. Which shows how they most definately do no need a key position forward.

Gysberts at 30 would be a gift, just I would also very seriously look into Jesse Crichton if he if available in the absense of Taylor/ Thomas/ Fitzpatrick/ Panos.

But otherwise... fair enough.

Nice draft for the Bombers.... we probably dont need to get Fitzpatrick at #26 and will go with a mid instead.

Kane Lucas in red and black would be lovely :)

essendon will not pass on bastinac and gysberts, we may not get a ruckman in this draft, maybe the rookie draft

we already have big Christian Bock on the rookie list. I wouldnt mind Majak Daw as a rookie next year. Hopefully he is around at our rookie pick #10!!

Good stuff mate. I doubt we will get Fitzy and Gawn. If you think Fitzy will turn into a KPF then wouldnt Panos be the better option (i dont believe u would select 2 ruckman for a team with 5 ruckman currently)? or do you Rate Fitzy better. I wouldnt be upset with that draft

Carlton will draft the best available player

#12 – Carlton
Aaron Black (WA)
Height: 193cm, Weight: 78kg, Recruited from: Peel Thunder
Now that Carlton has lost Fev to the Lions and Bradshaw to Sydney, a tall is probably on the radar. Black is a powerful KPP and he will suit Carlton’s needs to a tee.

Would prefer Melksham, Sheppard or Moore for Carlton.

Pace, skill, run, accountability and decision making is needed at the Blues.

I'd probably pick Sheppard as my uneducated pick.

Sheppard's game might be suited to our home ground and the G.

Though I like Moore as a marking forward and a utility.

Would be really happy with jetta and colyer but not so sure about fyfe at 23

IMO there are better options available

Pretty sure bartlett will definitely feature in the first 2 rounds and i have a feeling adelaide may snap him up with 13, but would love him at eagles even more than colyer if both are available.

No chance Richmond will pass on Griffiths and with Tippett, Walker and McKernan I don't see Adelaide going for Panos.

Nice effort. Liked that you throw some different names in to the second round.

In regards too Adelaide, Adelaide will not take Panos. As the post above points out, Adelaide have Tippett, Walker and McKernan and a player Adelaide fans believe can eclipse all three Phil Davis.

I wouldnt be upset with that draft

yer i definitly rate fitzy above panos. he has more upside. thats my only reasoning. plus panos is only 192, he is not a super tall KPP, i think the dons need a taller kid to complement neagle (more a third tall) and others.

just my opinion

#16 – Port Adelaide
Nathan Vardy (VIC)
Height: 198cm, Weight: 89kg, Recruited from: Gippsland Power
Best ruckman in the draft. With the retirement of Lade and Brogan not getting any younger, this to me seems like a good choice. Next year it will be hard to snare a decent ruckman with the new draft system.

Your Thoughts???

Yep, I'll refer to a previous post of mine

Doing a phantom draft is something I couldn't do, however if I did one, I'd be sure to know who and what is already on a club list.

Now take Port for example, people are saying we should draft a ruckman, specifically a junior ruckman.

I'd like to know of what use a junior ruckman would be to Port in 2010 & 2011?

It's common for ruckmen to take 2 to 3 years to mature into a body that could cope with AFL play.

Plus on Port's list are the following players --

Dean Brogan 200cm 30 years old
Matthew Lobbe 199cm 20 year old
Jarrad Redden 202cm 18 year old
Daniel Stewart 199cm 21 year old
Jackson Trengove 197cm 19 year old (more a KP backman I believe)

plus Rookie listed --

Daniel Bass 198cm 22 year old

So I ask, of what possible use or good would it be for Port to add a 17 or 18 year old ruckman?

Now if you were to say Port were recruiting Darren Jolly, then sure.

Drafting in a 17 or 18 year old ruckman, saying we desperately need him is absolute garbage.

Now I'm not having a go at just you Scooter, but at all the phantom drafters thinking Port need to, or are sure to, draft another rucking kid.

It wont happen in the National Draft, now the Rookie Draft is another matter altogether.

My opinion hasn't changed, why would Port use picks 8 or 9 or 16 on a 17 or 18 year old ruckman this coming draft?

here's my opinion/reasoning:

You forgot Still, who was expected to go first round this year, so we really don't need Fitzpatrick, I would really prefer Gysberts at this pick. Ryder can play like Drew Petrie: 60-40 between ruck and forward. So there goes that argument. But if you give us Fitzpatrick there, please give us another midfielder at 33
