Do we need another AFL Club or are there too many as it is?

We have enough teams. The AFL will not cull any teams for the foreseeable future. Expansion in 10 years maybe.

It would be dissapointing to lose any Victorian clubs, clearly the best optioon to grow the game and the TV auidence in particular is to re locate teams to Tassie, Canberra, maybe NT. The AFL can force thisto take place by dismantling the equalisation process and forcing teams into insolvency, then doing it themselves or get their co-operation upfront

No victorian teams will be forced to relocate either. The only chance of relocation would be if the suns failed. All expansion will be new clubs set up from scratch.

Too many fans are lost to the game through relocation and fans = revenue.

All the victorian teams will be profitable going forward.

Completely wrong

TV audiences = Revenue

$2 Billion on the last deal wasnt it, to promote whole states viewing habits means the state needs a connection with the product Broader NATIONAL TV coverage with ratings means more than any amount of fans to the actual games

And who do you think watch the games on TV smartarse. Relocating a vic club would cause a significant decline in ratings.

It is inevitable another Vic club will relocate. Probably with the suns, like the bears. To enable a new franchise to enter

Why is it inevitable? The more teams in the comp = more games played = more tv revenue. Relocation makes little sense and has proven to be a massive failure in many sports.

Relocation makes sense when you can bump the crowd attendance each week, significantly.
Relocation makes no sense when it is the club you follow though.

It's a numbers game ($). The AFL would prefer to have a loss making side that offered growth in new markets than a loss making club in a saturated market.

They know the "to be" Fitzroy supporters are now pies, blues or other club and gained exposure in Queensland. Give it 50 years, the AFL have gained everything by expanding in new jurisdictions and lost nothing!

You can saturate a market aswell and watch ratings drop.

For Tassie to get ratings up on a national level, the revenue increaes substantially with more advertisers in that state, people will be more interested if their state is involved and although it is a club based comp, people adopt those states clubs

It would be a far greater advantage haveing a team in Tassie than Vic for TV purposes if they were to relocate North or Bulldogs or St Kilda. You would lose a percentage of an already small base and gain a states support including that of the Tassie Government

Look how its worked for the Adelaide teams with the state government investing half a billion in the OVAL increasing the profile of the sport

How will you bump the crowd attendance? Has this ever happened?

Why would the AFL relocate a club when they can start another franchise from scratch?

and yeah, literally zero chance it's North getting relocated, that ship sailed in 07.

you mean the 2 povvo Adelaide teams that barely had one player drafted this year. What about them?

Tassie would be better off with a new team. There is zero justification for relocating a Vic team.

problem is that the vic clubs won't make losses from next year onwards.

No club is safe if they can't maintain profits or able to service their debts, you would say north will be one club that will always be looking over its shoulder and have to work extremely hard to stay above the bread line

Can't maintain profits or service debts?
Yeah mate, sure....9 out of 10 years of profits this year....debt is minimal and well under control. The AFL won't be ****ing us up the arse so much with Etihad next year either which is nice too.

We are more than fine as are all vic clubs.

Is that because of the equalisation fund and the fact clubs like west coast, adelaide , Collingwood prop up the strugglers

The amount of teams in Vico will see around 4 clubs continue to struggle, you guys would be fairly entrenched in that 4

That's not saying Port don't struggle or the northern state teams they are just more important in the TV deal than so many Vic clubs

Most of the TV viewers are in the southern states and WA.

I think the AFL would be happy with keeping all the existing VIC clubs if they can stay above water which they are currently doing and getting stronger.

There will be no team relocated. The AFL will ensured that all clubs survive. The more teams the more money. Its as simple as that. If you move a team you lose members and supporters. At the moment the AFL has representation in the major markets. In the future in may begin teams to cover the smaller markets of Tasmania and NT/Northern Queensland but as a business, it currently will not increase overall revenue enough to warrant the potential start up cost, minimal sponsorship money and player/administration wages.

In the future, once the two new expansion clubs are established and consistently profitable, Tasmania will be the most obvious choice for expansion but the league has shown that it will avoid creating a bye at all costs so another club would be started as well. This is why a Northern Team would be my best guess as the region least represented at present. Alternatively the AFL may hope to begin another club in a proven AFL region of Australia such as WA. The team would need to be drawn from a popular historical WAFL club so it has a ready made supporter base. It would be relatively small compared to the other two big WA clubs but would certainly have a loyal membership base.

So basically, the only way one of the existing clubs will be relocated will be if one completely fails which, given the history of our competition, I find extremely unlikely. Expansion is far more likely.
