Very good game played today.
Strong wind blowing all day - made it tough for the team going into it.

Mitchell Hahn was BOG in my opinion, did everything we all have been hoping. He hustled, bustled, tackled and most of all won the footy. Things are looking very promising on that front.

Grant was very solid at CHB - looked like the Grant of old.
Skipper was impressive, took some marks and won a fair bit of footy early. Really presented himself as did The Wig who looks like he has the FF spot for the year. He took some good grabs against quality opposition and in trying conditions. Converted reasonably well.

Johnno went off with a crok shoulder, didn't appear to be too much damage. Maybe just brusied AC joint.

Eagleton...... tackled well on a few occassions but was his usual frustrating self.

Browny was at his usual best, strong hands, good goals.

Overall it was a good team effort, I didn't think we would be able to contain the Lions in the last qtr but through some hard work by Hahn, Darcy, Birss, Grant, Brown and pretty much all the lads they stuck it out. Smothers, tackles and shepherds were good, they seemed to do the little things a bit more today. Well done Doggies.

Match didnt have the intensity of the geelong game, looked pretty cruisey out there. Blustery conditions, make long kicking fairly unreliable. we snatched an early lead, they took it back quickly inthe 2nd quarter, and it was an even tussle in the third. we won the game into the wind in the last quarter basicly just by trying ahrder I thought.

Johno, Bandy did not play. bruton was on bench but didnt get a run


Brown: got lots of the ball up forward, could have finished with a higher tally in better conditions. A bit selfish at times.

Wiggy: Tryed hard and made a contest when the ball came near him.

Grant: Had the best of J.Brown, took some grabs, mopped up, professional outing.

Kritter: did well, a nice game

Hahn: did good things, 2nd and 3rd efforts were nice

Birrs: like a terrier - one of those annoying yappy types more than bull. A few clangers and stuff ups, but should improve

Robbo: did OK, seems to be more disiplined? some long kicks

Harrison: harrison is as harrison does

Darce: dominated stopages agasnt inferior opposition, not seen much around the ground

Alvey: got a bit of the ball, mostly on his own. was matched against martin pike when I arrived which I thought was wierd.

Eagle: was hot and cold. laid a few good tackles but hardly ever seems to beat an opponent in a contest

Murph: played on the ball at one stage without too much effect, a fairly murph-like game. As usual one or two cutesy passes failed horribly.

Smithy: always look a chance to score when he is steaming off half back, got a fair bit of ball.

Hargreave: played here and there, was not on the ground for the whole game. Looked poised in traffic

Skipper: ran around a lot, looked a bit lost

Garlick: nice game, was hard at it on the ball and took some well judged marks up forward

dimma: didnt see much ground time, very dimma-like when he was on

Basset: was beaten when the ball was delivered well, although got a few good punches from behind later in the game. isnt used to attack much when we have it.

West: workmanlike

Guido: always seem to expect more from him. got a bit of ball but cant remember him creating to much

Gilbee, came on in the second half, and ran well, showed a few good long kicks


If anyone wants to know what I look like, I snuck out next to the huddle at 1/4 time in a ridiculous big blue hat.

Bandy did not play.
McGuinness and Harris played for the Bees. Harris was solid with good marks and spoils. McGuinness was a bit patchy, did some nice things but also made some errors.
Boyd put in a great 4 q effort.

reported ,2nd and 3rd efforts terrific.
Skipper's goal in last qtr, I was sitting down that end, players were struggling to make distance into the wind , the ball dropping , Brown ttk mark 20 mtr out in outer pocket kicks across to Skipper on gstand flank, he goes back and from about 40 barrels it , I heard he is a big kick and this enforces the reputation.

Grant did well at CHB, Harro went to HFF and did well, Wiggo kept contesting and leading, Brown look a class above. Eagle was good with attack on ball and player, Guido dint do much until last qtr. Garlick was good .
Voss seemed to be everywhere, Robins got flattened and was a Lion reported ????

Thoughts on Bassett?

From what I saw I think we have got ourselves a very handy backman. Was very good in the contests and won the loose ball. He was a bit slow to react a few times on Lynch I think it was but Brisbanes delivery into the forward line was pretty good so it would've been very difficult for him.

I can see him playing FB /BP regularly this year. As much as I love The Ugg Boot I think this bloke may be a tad more effective in the backline.

Enjoyed today
Harrison, Skipper Wiggins and Brown forward line went really well.
Bassett killed Lynch and Bradshaw only got 1 where Bassett should have read it better.
Grant was BOG for me because he never made a mistake and solid as a rock(Brisbane's Brown was lost). Where did Sheehan place these two in his top 50. (Another matter-how hird got #2 on last years form/no of games is amazing)
Guido got a knock early and I don't think played well.
West a regular good game.
Smith programed to short pass, play on, or handball. Should be better than that. Doesn't think sometimes.
Murphy did this too. better than this.
No matter how slow or bad the disposal Kritter has. He is easily in the best 18. Played on a man his size for once!
Didn't think Eagleton was that bad.

Didn't think we played the conditions that well against the wind. Too many short passes, handballs in the back line and kicks to Brisbanes offensive side of the ground.

I think Bassett reminds me a lot of Port's Steve Paxman.
An honest contributor who gives you a good contest if you give him half a chance.
If the opposition deliver the ball laces up to his opponent then he will have a few kicked on him but if our midfield is accountable which is the Rohde theme, Bassett will will add depth to our defence. It is still early days but he is doing a good job in Crofts absence.

I thought Eagle contested well and did not allow the ball to come out easily from defence. Things did not go his way, but he was OK.

Boyd was terrific for the Bees, I will await your report and compare notes

I don't think McGuiness played.
Both Harris and Bruton played for Werribee(on and off the field) then sat on the interchange bench for the whole of the Doggies game

McGuinness played HB today for the Bees, was OK but made a few errors.
Bruton was a little above average and I thought Harris was a bit better than that.

I agree with everything that was said. I thought we played a real team game today, which was good to see.
I thought akers should have got reported for doing what he did to robbo.
Geez skip can kick the footy. I saq him kick a long one at training one day but todays was a pretty good effort.

The most impressive bit about the Bulldogs, was that they seemed enthusiastic about having a go. The younger players stuffed up on occasions, but there was certainly an air of intent about the whole side.

N.Brown was very good up forward, and will prove to be one of the hardest players to stop in the league this season.

C.Grant looks like he is set to play the "Paul Roos" role, floating across half-back and carving teams up with plenty of marks and useful forrays up the field. He was excellent at dropping back into the hole, and really had J.Brown running in circles for most of the day.

From the appearance of things, there will certainly be a fair amount of weight on the shoulders of L.Darcy, who went hard all day as the biggest Bulldog on the ground.

If Rohde can instill a strong team spirit, then this will go a long way to bringing a competitive side together, despite the perceived deficiencies of the unit. From what I saw today, players seemed fairly astute in regards to second/third efforts, and playing a meaningful role in the game. It'll take a while for the younger players to come on, and in this regard, the likes of Eagleton, Dimmatina, Garlick and the other 2nd tier players will need to lift in order to bring the strands together in the meantime. Notably though, the likes of Gilbee, Giansiracusa and co. do look somewhat bigger than from previous seasons, without having lost any pace or skill.

I reckon at time the Lions lack purpose, and there were a couple of undisciplined acts from Pike and Akermanis. The younger players, such as McLaren, Charman and McGrath were impressive with their endeavour - McGrath deserves to be given a serious run in the seniors. Notting looks to have worked on his intensity and attack on the ball, and I'm looking forward to an improved season on his part (especially consistency-wise). Caracella was involved in some useful pieces of play.

L.Power had a reasonable day, C.Johnson was good in patches, Leppitsch and Michael were steady down back, and the Scott's had a go. Ashcroft was useful, but had to be moved off of N.Brown when his pace and wit got the better of him in the 3rd. Bradshaw looked as though he has had a good hard look at his work rate, although, Voss appeared to be going at half-pace for most of the day.
