If Primus isn't happy with Rodan's ball-winning ability to make him a must-start best 22, then I have no qualms with offering our second round pick + Rodan to a contending club pushing for a flag for their first round pick.

Edit: To clarify, this isn't saying that I want Rodan gone. I love the guy and the way he plays. But he's not useful to us if he's not playing.

Do you remember 2008? All the clubs knew how strong the draft was and as a result all wanted to hang onto their first/second round picks. I don't imagine much will change this time around.

The host of choices such as Pearce, Thomas, Kane, Rodan, Westhoff, try and get a couple of first round picks if we can't get a PP, we need to make this draft happen.

Really? I think would lucky to get 1 top ten pick...we would more like to get an early 2nd rounder and a later 2nd rounder at best.


I think hartlett (if we are lucky) or butcher are the only ones in our team that could get us a first rounder...but we won't trade butch nor do I want us too

trading away very good ( but not elite ) players like boak and westhoff who we know suffer from not being surrounded by too many very good players and bringing in kids to surround them with guys like broadbent maccarthy brett ebert and rodan will get us where???

we need to surround guys like boak etc with better calibre players.

i think its pretty simple this year.

identify weakness

- midfield. skills. ability to execute skills under pressure. pace.

identify best talent in draft that are exemplary in these areas.

this draft should go deep. lets go with weight of numbers. choose wisely, but also give yourself more chances of nailing it by taking more. try to target some picks around the 40's-50's ( guys like fasalo etc have gone with these picks recently) to trade some of our fringe guys in the 26+ year age bracket ie ebert/ sal/ thomas/ salter / rodan etc.

hopefully we can find another gray with a pick in the 50's again.

if we can add midfielders with picks along the lines of ( at a guess)

picks 5 , 27, 46, 50*, 55*, 64 ( * traded in )

with some rookies

then we give ourselves a good chance of getting a couple of midfielders we really need.

I think boak will take that next step when he has some support and with 2 more great mids we could start seeing our midfield take that next step and as a club take that next step

We are going to finish on 4+ wins very easily. We will not get a priority pick.

We need to make sure that we use our picks well so we don't have another year down the bottom in 2013. That simple.

GWS and GC have been more than competitive and Melbourne have shown some improvement of late.
We have gone backwards.

While the midfield very much remains top priority, our tall forward stocks undoubtedly need a major boost.

If we want to actually re-challenge for a flag in the next 5-10 years, we'll need another very good KPF in addition to Butcher.

Westhoff and Daniel Stewart will never cut it in finals matches, while Schulz is at an age where he becomes increasingly irrelevant to future finals appearances. He is also at best a 2-2.5 goal per game forward over the course of season. It'd be great if we could do better than that.

Dreaming of the PP for a moment considering how bad we are. If We could get Whitfield, Grundy and Toumpas/Stringer (for Bernie) that would be the best we could do. I noticed Toumpas output has decreased this season.

Don't know but it appears all the mids these days are 188 or there abouts. Wingard stood out in the top 10 selection last year for one short reason

Reading Knightmare's draft thread, apparently Toumpas is very similar to Chad Wingard. He's 183cm so about the same size as him and would be played as a forward who runs through the midfield to start his career.

Just so everyone knows - Stringer is a 191cm player who can play a key position forward or back... but he's primarily a midfielder.

Not just midfielders, but skilled midfielders.

Let's put it this way. Quinten Lynch kicked 65 goals in WCE's premiership year. There's no way Westhoff and Butcher are that much worse than Quinten Lynch. Westhoff/Butcher having the ball delivered to him by an elite midfield would be better than Franklin/Cloke having the ball delivered to them by the likes of Cassisi, Kornes, Ebert, Pfeiffer, Broadbent and McCarthy.
