Also Danger went from one of the best players in the comp to the standout number 1 in the comp in his first year with the Cats.

Adelaide should have gotten more in the trade. Victim of circumstance in regards to Geelong.

What a bizarre post.

Sun's are damm lucky Gary Ablett Jrn was born and bred in Geelong other wise thy wouldn't have him.

Yeah but at least GC had trade currency in terms of picks and players Geelong had nothing to give Adelaide.

Also Geelong couldn't afford what Danger was asking so they are lucky because they are paying less then what his market value was.

You are talking two very different situations. Dangerfield and his partner wanted to go back to Moggs Creek. While, Ablett was made a godfather offer to go to the Suns.

Tigers wont match no need to let it get that far ...

Retaining Martin on a massively inflated contract is about as best they could hope for - rumours are Richmond are baulking at that - until all is clear on the new salary cap deals

Carr Martins manager tables the highest offer ... Tigers its over to you now? (Bit of a spiteful relationship by all accounts)

Money talks ... ;) if Hardwick gets the arse ... if

The tigers for a number of years has under payed their star players, which has created a big war chest.

This time they will need to pay market value plus maybe a little more to keep him.

With all due respect dont think thats a fair way to put it.

Tigers for a number of years have operated under regimented pay scale. Which has created a "reasonable" war chest. When Riewoldt & Rance last came out of contract big offers were tabled by Freo & Hawks respectively... Tigers paid going rates.

This time think they will have to play in a 2017 environment ... with another huge offer being "tabled" by an interstate team.

Much water must still flow under the bridge ... still much to play for all round at the Tigers in 2017.

It just doesn't work that way. There is a TPP and you can sit under for two years (95%) and then have to top up thereafter.

The Tigers just got Prestia on 700K. Maybe that has eaten some way into that war chest. It's just not as easy as you've put forward.

You can front-end contracts to create space. Theoretically a team could have already paid a decent amount of future year salary requirements. That means you can have a list with a total average salary (the average being over the length of the individual deals) that far exceeds 110% in any one year.

Yep, and I think we're probably at the stage where we'll need to chuck a chunk of money at someone, because you can only front-end your current list's contracts for so long, before you get to the point where you need to either start overpaying them, or pay a large amount of money to someone from elsewhere to come to your club, just to meet the minimum salary cap (which I believe has to be 100% for us this year, because we've already spent 3 years paying just 95%).

Your club is doing that at the moment and have cap ability to get a Fyfe or a Martin. But the thing is both Fremantle and Richmond have cap space as well.

Indeed, but surely there will come a point where the number gets too high and they don't want to risk potentially ending up stuck with them on a contract that big- especially Richmond, who surely don't have anywhere near as much cap space as us, given that it's been reported from memory that Rance is on about $900K PA, they are paying a chunk of Delideo's contract at GWS, Cotchin and Riewoldt would presumably both be on at least $650K and now there's talk that they're paying Prestia $700K.

If they then matched an offer of say $1.3mil for Martin and he chose to stay, or a deal fell through, their cap could be rooted for years!

the chunk we're paying is with the remainder of Deledio's deal with us - which was due to expire this year.

Thats 3-400k freed up right there
Yarran's payout gives us another 4-500k
Maric is close to retirement, another 300k

We can out-bid anyone on Martin as it'd take a sizeable difference from our offer to prize him loose.

Not going anywhere.

All that may be true, but if you're paying all them all that this year I think it's a fair bet that you'll be paying at least 100% of the cap (unless the next 30 on your list are all on minimum wage!) and as such you won't be able to pay 105% of the cap the following year, like we will.

I have no doubt Richmond could match any free agency offer.

The question though is would they or should they?

Could depend on how the Tigers perform this year, as to whether both Martin & the club want to stay together or part ways.

If Richmond rebound well, then good chance he stays. If Richmond spiral, sacking Hardwick, then may be better to rebuild & grab an early draft pick for Martin.

we had the 105% before Chapin retired and Vickery leaving, as well as Yarran's contract being paid out (counts to this year and then its out)

Deledio is being paid the difference between GWS contract and his existing one so its effectively halving of his costs to us

that's how we got Prestia and Caddy, with them presumably being front-loaded for year one as the club knew when Dusty was out of contract and would have kept that in mind before trading.

St. Kilda isn't the only club that can front load contracts.....we've been doing it for a while to juggle trying to bring in big names

The permitted amount of overspend is commensurate with the level of underspend in the relevant preceding period.

For instance, if a club was $500k below the combined limit in 2015, it can spend up to $500k over the combined limits across 2016 and 2017

The overspend amount in any given year permits a club to spend up to a maximum of 105 per cent of the combined limit in that year.

That will be the key. He'll only leave if WE think its for the best - as we did with Deledio

Hardwicks fate will play a pivotal role seeing as he's a very important role-model to Martin, but again it will depend on how we go. Not the place to explain in depth but we won't have another year like that
