Season 31 brings us an opportunity to get to know everyone better, so (hopefully) on a weekly basis we'll bring you some new insight into your team-mates with our interview series. First up is new co-captain Chipmunk.

Chipmunk, how did you end up at the East Side Hawks?

I first joined BigFooty about a year ago looking for Supercoach tips and was shown to the SFA by Genghis Tron and Caz. I put my name on the sign-up thread and went to bed. When I woke up I felt very popular with lots of PMs! After a bit of time talking to the Captains and looking at the threads I chose the Hawks over the Demons and the Bears. I was aware that they were going through a rebuild of sorts and it was attractive being part of that.

Demons captain manangatang reckons he had a big part in that, which to me marks the first time you might not have been a Hawk. What about the second time: your secret defection to the expansion Vampires. What happened there?

Soon after I joined I got involved in some Werewolf games and found I was building up my profile there. In contrast, I had not contributed too much to the Hawks and was very much finding my feet. When I was approached, it was appealing; what better to make an impact in helping form an entirely new team? It sucked to keep it secret but understood that was the process. Of course as soon as I accepted, my own profile at the Hawks increased immeasurably - winning a Rising Star nomination, gaining confidence in threads and discovering the S29 rookie group. When the bid fell through I made clear that I was staying at the Hawks and not joining a future expansion bid.

You joined the SFA whilst Season 29 had already commenced. Do you think that changed your experience compared with a rookie joining up in an off-season?

It definitely did. I wasn’t even aware there was a rookie group until around Rd12, and you know your chances of winning rookie awards are quite a bit lower. The thing that strangely helped though was people thinking I was Caz’s alt. It meant I had to get in amongst it because I was getting some early attention.

For folks that don't know, there's an inkling you might not be around from these parts. Where are you from and how did you find the AFL?

I’m English, but lived in Melbourne from 2015-2017. In one of my first weeks the Hawks three-peat GF was on and a few drinks later I was at the MCG singing along to Ellie Goulding! I think you have to get involved in the footy to really experience the Melbourne culture.

Why did you latch on to GWS?

I was originally a Hawks fan as I lived in Glenferrie, but when I joined BigFooty I realised I wasn’t that big a fan and I knew nothing about the history. It felt more fun getting involved in a newer team with some active fans in the SFA. Happy to say I slept all through the 2019 GF though!

One of the things folks notice about you is that you have a keen interest in many forms of gaming. The obvious ones are the SFA, and the Chess references in your signature; can you let us in on what else you're into inside and out of BigFooty?

Yeah sure! I spend most of my time on BigFooty on the SFA, chess, soccer or Song Contest threads - and then get involved in Supercoach when the footy season starts. You're right, the Friday night Disord games nights in The Club Room have been quite popular! I've only been on BigFooty for a year though so no doubt there's a lot on this site that I'm not aware of. Out of BigFooty I do also Captain a chess team in real life, but like many others I'm trying to adjust to another lockdown here in the UK.

Yeah, lockdowns aren't that much fun. On a brighter note, you're the new captain of the East Side Hawks. How is the role suiting you?

I'm looking forward to the season! It's very exciting being co-captain and you've been brilliant showing me the ropes. It's a great group with cracking new additions. We'll see if we get a kind sim and a good run in finals this season and beyond.

Do you have any final words of wisdom for your team-mates before round 1 of season 31?

Famous last words I know, but I'm feeling good about this season. I'd tell my fellow team-mates to get stuck in and show the rest of the SFA why the Hawks is the place to be. We don't need to spam to make an impact.

Welcome to the new season! Agent93 returned with new co-captain Chipmunk to answer the age-old question; will we suffer our usual first round loss? We had new recruits in the form of our new ruckman Hate , the returning PhenomenalV1 and rookies andleanback and Zoops . On the other side Wosh was celebrating our 150th game, returning to the league to line up for the Roys. And newly crowned PMBangers wrote the OPs, reimagining the game in Star Wars form, with the LG gaining sage advice from master larrikin .

It was a close game. por_please_ya for the Hawks scored the first goal, and 9 goals in total were scored in the first quarter. Returner FitzroyRamone was included in the goals for the Roys, whilst Hate himself and fellow returner PhenomenalV1 was in the goals for the Hawks. The Hawks had a lead of 5 points. The game continued goal for goal until 2 goals from fitzroybowiedog gave the Roys a one goal lead at half time.

The third quarter, amazingly, went the same way as the previous two. It was close going goal for goal, until fitzroybowiedog went 1 better. With 3 goals in the late stages of the quarter, the Roys had a 23 point lead. And despite some heroics from Biggie in the final quarter, the Roys secured a valuable 19 point win. fitzroybowiedog ended up on 6 goals.

Biggie accumulated 17 disposals and PhenomenalV1 top scored for us with 3. In a decent defensive effort, PMBangers get 6 tackles and Chipmunk got 5 tackles. We have a lot of positives to take into our next game against the Furies.

• Drunkgoliath notched his first career hitout in his 83rd career game, and then went for nine more for good measure.
• por_please_ya's round 2 DreamTeam score of 140 was a career high. Her 37 disposals were equal to the effort of Rd 16 in Season 29 against the Bombers.

• Milera2Betts had a perfect 7 disposals in Rd3. Why is that perfect? Because it takes her to a nice round 2000 career disposals.
• Accuracy is woeful, the Hawks are second worst in the league in goalshooting lead by spearheads Itsmyshow at 53.3% and PhenomenalV1 at 54.5%
• 11kgm is fairing better at 57.1% (get him the ball folks!), but our sharp-shooter is por_please_ya with 4 goals off the wing at 66.7%
• Both Shermy and eth-dog are more miserly than S30, dropping their Goals Against average.

• SM has overtaken por_please_ya as the team's leading possession gatherer, however porps cracked 2000 career disposals in Rd 4.
• Accuracy matters, and Golumless is rocking a woeful 28.6% shooting percentage. The team best is rookie andleanback with 4 goals at 80.0%
• Shermy is quietly putting together a top defensive season with his goals against average down 0.75 per game over S30.
• Zoops is still searching for that elusive maiden SFA goal.

• A posting stat: Red mist turned up with 53 chats and a media thread, which makes him equal 11th in total posts this season.
• Agent93 hasn't kicked a goal in 5 rounds and is still stranded on 99 career goals, but like NinjaSwan, hasn't missed a shot this season.
• The violence is well spread with por_please_ya and Drunkgoliath joining andleanback to lead the club with 8 frees against.
• If we lose against the Warriors in Rd7 PMBangers and 11kgm's career win percentage will slip below 30%.

• Milera2Betts chalked up her 150th game for the East Side Hawks in Round 7 (career game 208). Shame about the loss.
• Agent93, presiding over this terrible period of losing, has drawn level with Mr Eagle as the second most tenured captain of the club.
• The last four games have been played in Warm conditions. We have also lost the last four games. Coincidence?
• The qoach saw fit to rotate the FF in the 4th minute of the game. Red mist still didn't fix our accuracy woes firing at 50%.

Stats are Late, because reasons:

• Round 8 marks the first time this season we've won a game in Warm conditions. It's also our 5th Warm game in a row.
• In the past two seasons Golumless was good for one or more goals per game. This season he's on track for half that.
• In the seven rounds preceding SM was averaging a DT score of exactly 75. In round 8 he scored exactly 75 DT points. Delicious.
• Speaking of SM: excluding him, the entirety of our midfield have had more goals kicked on them individually, than our centre half-back eth-dog.

• Random stat #1: Shermy remains the sole Hawk with 100% time on ground with PMBangers and Agent93 spending time on the bench against the Demons
• Random stat #2: Agent93 remains the sole Hawk with 100% scoring accuracy, with NinjaSwan scoring a behind against the Swamprats in Rd 8.
• por_please_ya is the first Hawk this season to tally 200 disposals with her 31 touches on the weekend.
• The goal scoring accuracy differential in the last game: 31%. Yikes.

• Hey we won! Goals were plundered as Itsmyshow, PhenomenalV1, and 11kgm combined for 14 to outscore our round 10 total of, uh, 10.
• TY24 combined with himself to kick 1 goal 4, with some of the most apt sim commentary ever produced.
• Milera2Betts did the same in Rd10, but she flipped the script against the Bears and didn't miss a shot.
• por_please_ya notched her 250th disposal in Rd 11. Shermy notced his 100th.
• Hate's starting to get a reputation as a one way runner giving up 5 goals in the past two rounds, making him the second most scored on Hawk for the season.

The resistance continues in mid 2021, striking blows against the unholy coalition of the idle. PLUR remains at acceptable levels, but what the world needs now is to reclaim the gift of anger and so the loyal few look to burn it all down. Will this be the last stand for The East Side Hawks as the take the stage in the Season 31 Festival of the Biggie!​

Welcome all to the season recap and Biggie-est cup count for the East Side Hawks in season 31 of the Sweet FA. Let's start of with a quick refresher of some of the big events across the league in the season that was:

• The East Side Hawks finished 7th and were eliminated in the first week of the finals at the hands of the vitriolic Bombers.
• NaturalDisaster completed his first administration campaign with no-one actively working to depose him.
• There were several new captains including Chipmunk and Mozzie19.
• The Hawks' Hate was unleashed and the league revelled in it.
• The Jesus descended and was revealed as the figurehead of a teen worshipping cult.
• A net even in wrestling afficinados was achieved with PhenomenalV1 replacing the retired Loonerty.
• The Mount Buller Demons lined up for another KOTD, taking away the S31 premiership.

Now that you're up to date let's recap the Hawks' season and count down the chase for the Biggie-est cup which recognises the player who has performed best on-field across season 31. The Biggie-est cup is named for former club captain, leading possession winner, and current teammate, Biggie!

This season The New Player Ratings System was again used to determine each and every Hawk's impact in each round and the cumulative total provides us with our best on-field player in season 31. Recent past winners include spookism, The Half Back, Agent93, and Loonerty. Who will get up in the Season 31 Festival?

In addition we'll be preseting the YOTC Plate for the club's top goal-kicker, the Mr Eagle captain's Trophy, The Filth Medal for the best new Hawk in the league, and the larrikin award: the player's choice of the best poster. Let's rip this pit apart!

*Note: for newcomers to the Festival of the Biggie this will take a couple of days to complete. Don't expect some wham bam 2 hours and it's done thing, this is a festival. Don't destroy yourself in the circle before the headliners hit. This aint no side show.

Roys FFC 15.10.100 defeated East Side Hawks 12.9.81 @ The BJO

It was the beginning of a new season and a new Hawks, after installing a twin captains chair to also fit Chipmunk alongside Agent93 we were off and away into a star wars themed opening round. The Hawks were excited to unleash new recruits Hate PhenomenalV1 Zoops and andleanback against the ever delightful Roys, quietly confident of delivering a demolition job on the losers.

It was an all round enjoyable week of Banter, as the Roys and Hawks continued their happy and healthy posting relationship, with friends Supersuns Dingster and fresh from retirement Wosh mixing well, almost at to the point where they should be hawks….. Hmm something to consider indeed.

Once pleasantries were done with, we were set to get underway in Muddy conditions at the BJO. The Hawks led for majority of the first half thanks to the efforts of new recruit Hate who registered 2 goals in his first 40 minutes of Qootball at the Hawks, along with the likes of 11kgm, por_please_ya and Itsmyshow. Despite the efforts, the Roys headed into the main break with a 6 point lead. It didn’t get better from there for our Hawks heroes, as the Roys went on to win by 19-points and give the Hawks flashbacks of the bottom four season they had just endured.

Round 2 :: Sun Feb 14th, 2021
Fighting Furies 14.11.95 lost to East Side Hawks 18.16.124 @ rfctigerarmy's Hippodrome

There were calls to sack the Qoach from the Hawks faithful after a poor showing in Round 1, but with the full support of the playing group, and the board, Clarko93 continued in his role with ChipMitchell to be a gradual successor. Regardless of the off field chatter around Qoaching appointments, the Furies hosting the Hawks in a, well, awful fashion.

With their, I don’t really have an adjective for it, but their posting was something and was the motivator leading into the game, as the Qoaching Qrew gleefully exclaimed “We ******* owe these pricks for what they’ve done to us” before we ran out.

We kicked off in spectacular fashion, exchanging the lead throughout the first half with the Furies heading in to the main break with an 11 point lead, despite the best efforts of fresh faced andleanback with 2 second quarter goals. It was a straight between the eyes half time chat, with Chipmunk pulling the team in and sitting us down in a semi-circle orientation.

“We’ve had a poor first half, that’s alright, talking about it won’t change that. What I want you all to do is close your eyes and think back, think back to the week we’ve endured out here. They’ve put us in dumpsters, they’ve strawmanned the hell out of us and they’ve quite honestly been downright unpleasant! Are we going to let them get away with that?”

It proved to work, as the Hawks ran out the game with an eventual 29 point victory in enemy territory, with 8 goal kickers amongst the 18 scored for the team, it was team play galore as the Hawks steadied themselves to sit 1-1
