i dont get why people think we'll finish 10th to 15th next season. yes we lost 2 top players but neither were particularly involved this season for various reasons and we still made the 8. we are no chance to contend though now...

While we still have the tools to compete on the field, the fabric of the group has now been damaged. There will be a wedge between the playing group and the coaches, many of the players will now be distracted due to being worried about their own futures and morale will be low.

We’ll field a decent round 1 team. How they perform is the question. It’s easy to see us dropping off rapidly next year.

Time will tell. If rumours are true that Treloar and Stevo were unpopular amongst the playing group then maybe the coaches and players will actually be closer than before. Heres hoping some good comes out of this crap.

Looking at it logically from teams that we will perhaps fight for a finals birth with.
All these team will improve next year. We on the other hand wont be.
My opinion only of course.

Port - Added, Allir & Fantasia (already better than us)
Saints - Added, Brad Crouch & Higgins (will leap us if they haven't already)
Blues - Added, Saad, Williams, Lachlan Fogarty (will leap us)
Lions - Added, Daniher, Cockatoo (already better than us)
Cats - Added, Cameron, Higgins & Isaac Smith (already better than us & the gap widened considerably)
Eagles - Added Witherdon & Zac Langdon (already better than us)
Tigers - Lost some depth only. (already better than us)
Dogs - Added, Treloar, Stefan Martin (will leap us)
Essendon - Lost Daniher & Saad & brought in Caldwell & Hind (not improving)
Melbourne - Added Brown (will leap us)
Giants - Lost Cameron, Zac Langdon & Williams. Replacements average coming in.
Freo - didn't do a lot (bottom 8)
Gold Coast - Added Markov & lost Wright - (Meh)

Pies - Lose Treloar, Stevo, Phillips - Gain nobody

It's going to be a tough year.
In terms of our loses none really played a huge part in 2020. What it hurts though is our depth (Treloar, Phillips) and match winning ability (Stephenson).

Treloar - 10 games in 2020
Stephenson 14 games, 14 goals
Phillips - 15 games in a unfamiliar role

We haven't added anyone from another club, but we do have three players who were largely sidelined in 2020 and top 5-10 on our list to come back in. Can the same be said for other sides? We also have a couple of handy types and some young players who we should be excited about.

Howe - would have been AA
Sidebottom
DeGoey - match winner on his day
Cox - 11 matches and was largely blind for the first half of the season. When plays well we win.
Greenwood - 6 games, adds experience and hardness to the side
Quaynor - 11 games and a freak injury. Already established in our best 22.
T. Brown - 6 games, if his brother is any guide this is the preseason where he will develop an AFL ready body. Still needs to win more footy and confidence, but he has moments or glimpses that few are capable of.
Kelly - didn't look out of place on debut
Ruscoe - I suspect he's the one to be given more opportunity through the departure of Stephenson
Keane - hopefully with another preseason he's more ready in 2020
Tohill - showed some terrific form in the practice games; don't think 2021 will be his breakout year, but he's one to watch
Murphy, Bianco and Rantall - we didn't hear a lot about these players in 2020. Rantall looked good in the preseason match against the tigs, Murphy was highly rated and hopefully gets senior opportunities.

While our depth is undoubtably weaker now looking at the opposition Port, StK, BL, Geel, and Rich had much lower injury lists our us in 2020. Port's depth in particular wasn't exposed. There's a lot of internal improvement available we just need everything to come together. This will determine where we finish in 2021.

Curious to get people's views on this now that we know what our list is looking like sans the draft.

What is everyone's expectations for how we do next season?
The bigger question is, what happens to Bucks if we don't make the 8 next year? It will be 10 years since he took over with zero return. The only way he keeps his job, is by winning a flag IMO. He can't be given an extension surely. Is there any coach that has coached a side for 10 years without a flag? Mick Malthouse got one in his 10th year, but in all honesty, Mick inherited a team that was for the dog house. Bucks inherited a top 2 side and failed dismally, apart from 18-19

I can categorically say Adam Treloar is BEST mates with Sidebottom, Howe, Crisp and Adams. He was not unpopular, that for sure.

You left Sier off that list. Huge upside. Its time for him to step up.

And a bit harsh writing C Brown off.

Plus plenty of improvement from some players within our best 22...Noble and Daicos for starters along with Quaynor who you mentioned. Plus Grundy is capable of far better form than 2020. Agree on Cox.. people underestimate the impact of his eye injury late in 2019. One might even argue Moore still has plenty of upside.. especially if they roll the dice and try him forward

Our depth might be better than what we are giving it credit for.

(On the other side of the argument there are plenty who wont improve much from here and are possibly still on the slide)

Cheers, yep missed Sier and C. Brown. Sier I'm at that the stage where if he plays AFL footy and establishes himself it's a bonus, just too many false starts to be overly excited. I tried to focus on those who didn't play much senior footy in 2020 those you named in our 22 are certainly capable of improving, Grundy in particular could make a big difference. C. Brown is on the edge of that 22, but still played over half the season. I'm not sure where C. Brown settles as a footballer; I like his evasiveness through a contest just wish he had a bit more size/strength and kicking penetration. Perhaps that comes with further maturity in his body?

As you say there's some you won't come on. With our departures we need more to go right if we're to compete for finals in 2021.

Will miss the 8 by 5+ games (Assuming a full season) and will do next to nothing next trade period as no players manager in his right mind will be advising them to go the CFC - citing examples of Treloar and Stevo.
Only thing they can rely on is the Draft and good luck with that as they have managers as well.

Pretty clear the spin they will use for this. Will be able to blame the salary cap and hitting draft as excuses. Buys him 2 more years

It's unpopular to mention C Brown in here. I do like what he does and hopefully missing games at the end of the year has made him hungrier to improve and cement his spot. Daicos turned it around in a short time and I feel Callum is poised to do the same. We have more than enough to cover the loss of our trade fiasco and hopefully bring in some good young committed talent through the draft.

People are so fugging dramatic. I’m as devastated about AT and JS being gone as anyone, but the fact is that we played a good chunk out of the year without AT and JS was fairly sh*t for the bulk of the year too. We’ll be ok without them, although it will be tougher to compete at the pointy end in the short term. We should still finish top 8 unless something disastrous happens during the season.

we finished 8th and now our list is weaker and a lot of clubs around us have improved theirs.

Unless Sier Murphy Rantall ect come on quickly, we're going to go backwards.

If he learns how to kick the ball over those pesky jam tins which keep getting in his way, he might be a chance.

My guess is somewhere in the 9 - 11 range, thereabouts but not quite. We’ve done nothing to improve centre clearances, which was a glaring hole this year and nor does our ball movement/delivery inside 50 look to have been bolstered. Even if we draft well, 2 new first year players taken at 14 and 16 aren’t going to have much impact in 2021. It will be a backwards year and as others have mentioned, teams around us in that 7 - 12 range have (or will) improved making it all the more difficult in comparison.

Our list is not that much weaker immediately considering the seasons the three players had, Most people were calling for Phillips and Stephenson to be dropped all year whilst Treloar was a constant scapegoat .

With Howe and Sidebottom back we probably start off at least breakeven from where we left off. If Grundy and Cox can play nearer their best that will also help, as will DeGoey avoiding injuries ( especially freak ones). The West Coast Final was a great boost for Cox.

We need the next generation to come on but that’s true every year.

Our list is still top 8 material after those departures.

Who knows what the mood around the place will be like though. I voted no finals but anywhere between 5th and 14th wouldn't surprise.

So roughly how much do we owe Treloar, Beams and Langdon going forward? Until you clear those they’re write off years, we may as well just develop young players.
I'm hoping we can pay out as much as possible next year due to off loading Treloar, Phillips and Stevenson. We should be trying to pay as much as possible in one year.

You forgot to add IMHO to the start of your over dramatic post.

If we fail next year, I feel Bucks will fall on his sword.
