Multiplat Fallout 3

I've played a bit of this game and it is fun it's VERY Oblivion like. I don't say that in a bad way (competely) but it is true. There is also a bit of the "psychic guard" nature. I open a box in a room whilst the guy is asleep and he suddenly attacks me. It's also annoying, like oblivion, that you may accidentally click on a tin cup inside a house and they think you are stealing. I'd like a "we can work this out" gesture haha.

If your sneak skill is high enough, if you crouch you can do it without being detected.

Check at the top of the screen to see if you're detected or not before you steal things or pick a lock. I don't steal because i'm a good guy, but i've hacked the odd private computer or picked a private door.

Build up your stats mate. Its part of the game:thumbsu:

The historian at Rivet City attacked me for turning his radio on :(

I shot his legs off.

An odd question, but, any reason why you can't kill the kids? :o
Legal? Classification reasons?

Goddamn it, the future of Megaton must perish as well!
Lead designer on Fallout 3 Emil Pagliarulo explains why killing kids is not allowed.

I often struggle with whether or not we as game developers should have a heightened sense of social responsibility when creating entertainment.

Fallout 3 is an M-rated game—made for adults. Its violence is over-the-top and has been a central focus of not only our game, but the entire franchise. This is a series that in previous installments allowed players to kill children, right? When Bethesda first started developing Fallout 3, we had early conversations about whether you’re going to be able to blow the kids’ heads off . (Let’s be clear, with the ESRB’s rating system, that’s not something that would fly anyway.)

But then we began to think, really what benefit would there be in killing the kids in the game? It just seems gratuitous, unnecessary and cruel. The reverse of that is some of the great stories that have been told that involve kids. Look at George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire books. Kids play an important part in that series, and violence to those kids is an important part of those stories.

You really have to balance out and consider if doing violence to a child in a game is so important to your story that it outweighs any kind of social responsibility you might have.

And here comes the struggle again: At the end of the day, I feel like I’m an adult and I’m conscious of my buying decisions. I’m not making a game for an eight-year-old; I’m making a game for a 38-year-old like me, so I’m okay with the content. It’s really tough for me because I am an adult who likes to play M-rated games, and so are many of the people reading this article, as well as many of those who’ve been following the development of Fallout 3 since day one.

Maybe it’s arrogant to think this way, but damn it, it’s my god-given right to blow guys’ heads off if I want to in my videogames!

Nevertheless, I still think there is a certain social responsibility to not make things too violent. Fallout 3 is very violent, but the violence is cartoony. Sometimes you’ll shoot a guy in the head and it won’t explode; it takes the whole head off. Is it realistic? No, it’s funny, and it becomes cool because of that.

Of course, I think that kind of “humor” is open to interpretation. We’ve gotten so used to (maybe even enamored with) the game’s violence. Actually it sometimes surprised us when we’d show the game to a spouse or someone outside of the studio, and they’d respond, “God! What the hell is that?!” They’re really taken aback by it. We had been working so closely to the game, we would forget about the possibility of that kind of response. But then again, the reaction to it among others has clearly been, “We want this game.” They like it and enjoy it, so a lot of people are sharing the same mindset that we have.

We’re grown-ups, we can make and play something like this. We think it’s funny, we think it’s fun and people have been agreeing with that. We don’t want to cross lines like killing kids (we actually never got as far as even putting kill-able kids in any builds of the game). For us, that was a line we certainly didn’t want to cross, and we think that was the right decision. It wouldn’t have been socially responsible, at least in the case of Fallout 3.

I'm thinking of getting this game. Everything meets the recommended (and obviously minimum) requirements except my graphics card (512mb nvidia 8600GT). I have a 22" monitor so would I be able to run this game without significant visual compromises?

I got a 512 8800, running on a 22" widescreen at 1680x1050 and in most cases its fine. I upgraded my drivers which made even more of a difference. I don't think you would have too many troubles.

I wouldn't mind tapping into the role-playing sort of market, see what all the fuss is about. This game worthwhile? The kind of atmosphere seems really interesting, with the whole post-apocalyptic world and what not.

I'm not a massive RPG guy either mate, nor are many of my mates which have bought this game and absolutely loved it.

It's the game of the year. Not even a contest really.

So many good games out right now...and i couldnt give a toss about them until i play this through at least twice, which will be a massive undertaking (1 playthrough is tbh).

That's saying something....

Ace. I may take advantage of the JB offer of trading 3 games in for 1 and get it! I did have it on pre-order from Asia for $57, but that fell through because it was an NTSC copy. I then hesitated on getting it because there are so many other good games coming out (CoD, L4D, Undercover, GH:WT, GoW2), but i'll probably get Fallout anyway. :D

Agree wholeheartedly.

Fallout 3 is different in a such a good way.

I can't get into many RPGs simply because of the shitty themes, but Fallout 3 is so morbidly violent and offensive it redefines what I expect from RPGs.

I can't think of any game where kids aren't immortal. I doubt the classification boards would look upon it kindly.

In WoW I once tried to kill the 'king' of stormwind with a low level horde character, only to be severely dissapointed :(

There is actualy a glitch in the game that allows you to kill two sleeping kids in one of the towns. Funny thing is as players can't kill children they don't actually die, you do however get the experience points for the sandman kill though. To top it all off as they don't actually die you don't lose karma (might need to double check that one) and you can do it over and over again.

Also for those of you who find the naughty sleepwear, there is a bloke somewhere who will buy it for 200 caps, if you steal it off him he will then re buy it for another 200 caps. Easy money but a hit to the karma section.

I ordered this game on ebay (US ver.), and every day I'm anxiously checking my letter box when I get home from work for an SApost item slip, which is followed by a period of dissapointment when I find out I won't be spending the night playing Fallout 3. The only other time I've been this hyped for a game was GTA4, and reading this thread just makes me want it more. Thanks!

Oh, and a curiosity question too. I noticed they had to change the 'morphine' item to 'med-x', or some generic name to get it past the AU censors. What is morphine used for in the game?

Med x increases your damage resistance...i think

What a joke that 'morphine' was banned. I love how RPA is on a relatively early time slot with some guys stomach being cut open and a 7kg tumor being removed, and morphine mentioned tonnes of times.

Yet if you portray it in a game thats marketed towards young adults, which you have to pay to view (i.e. it's not on free to air tv), then it's completely out.

Weeds was a heavily promoted show that ran ads that pretty much told you it was about a mother selling pot during early evenings. Oh but if you have some guy smoking pot in a game, which you have to OPT IN to get then it's a horrible crime.

What a joke that 'morphine' was banned.

I'd forgotten all about that TBH.

Remember when we all thought it was banned and we weren't going to get it at all.

****ing hell...that would have sucked balls.

Finally picked this up today. Havent played much, just leaving the vault now but it looks like the game has just taken up the majority of my weekend.
This is probaly a stupid question, also seeming I really should just play it :o But how do the stats work? I noticed as I was killing a few things often it would come up +2 or something or other. Do the stats get automatically allocated depending on the activity being performed? Or do you enter the stats options and allocate them yourself?

Also loved the opening sequence with the music playing :D Knew straight away the radio was going to fit perfectly.

Like most RPG's, if you kill something...or complete something, you'll get experience. Thats the numbers you see pop up.

Get enough experience and you'll level up, allowing you to add points to certain attributes, and select "perks", which unlock certain abilities.

Pumping up certain attributes will make you smarter and more able to pick more locks/hack computers, stronger so you can take more damage, shoot straighter etc etc

Where is galaxy radio station?? I'm sick of looking
Look on your pipboy
you should be able to find it-.-

lol i'm doing the Wasteland SUrvival Guide and i somehow got my way out of doing the minefield section

wheres that place near anchorage?
and also

how many missions are there in Megaton?

and also

like when you choose to make the bomb work, can you choose when it explodes? .cuz i plan to kill everyone for the experience
