Try and get this back on track.
One thing I admired in Bomber was the way in which he addressed the media. Never stuck his head out just did his interviews where required without talking a heap of crap. :thumbsu:

Will you all still be toasting him if he shows up for a job at Essendon in 2011?

It doesn't matter if he was released from his contract, he told Frank Costa he is not going to Essendon. Also, Bomber told Gary Ablett about loyalty, so he needs to show it himself, but not being involved with any other club in any way from twelve months.
Why would anyone care if he assists Hird. He's not going to be a senior coach any more than Laidley was at Port.

My favourite moment was his going away speech today.?

No, on a serious note, I really appreciated his acceptance speech 09 GF, when he said to StKilda that footy can suck, and that we were very lucky. But that we deserved the win nevertheless. Modest and honest.

I mentioned remembering Alex Popescu in his speech immediately after the 07 Premiership as a highlight because it said something about perspective and gratitude. On a lighter note, his fiddling with a little device on the desk during an after match presser. Once he managed to turn down the lights and the second time turn off some microphones.

Thanks for the memories.

Agree with what's been posted here already.

But I reckon the thing that stands out for me is not a particular moment, but just more how Bomber was always so calm and confident. Watching the post-game press conferences after a loss always made me feel better. The media would build things up and say this or that, but Bomber's response was always don't panic. Things are under control. Every time he spoke I was always reassured the club was in safe hands.

All of the above. Personally, my favourite moment, earlier this year at the Subi training Bomber went along and signed autographs for everyone waiting. I'd run out of room on the back of my jumper so pushed my chest out and pointed just above the AFL logo. Selwood had signed above the Ford logo. Bomber laughed and said "For someone with a short name Joel sure has got a long signature".

I can't remember if it was Bomber or Selwood but when one of them was signing the front of the jumper a girl behind me said "Ah, man love." Whichever one it was said something along the lines of "I've always got love for the Cats' supporters." :)

I loved in his grand final speech last year the oh so "subtle" dig at the AFL's major sponsor against Geelongs major sponsor...

Oh and the sandwich, who can ever forget that.....

I remember in the early days
maybe the first year Bomber used to phone up members who had not yet renewed their membership .

Yeah apparently when he still lived in Melbourne he would do it on the drive to the cattery everyday. Fantastic effort and shows how much he wanted to rebuild the club both on and off the field.

Lmao. Yes!!!!! Forgotten all about that. Good memory :thumbsu:

Also a personal one, had my 21st in March back in 2001 on a Saturday night. The next day on the Sunday the Cats had a family day at the zoo. Remember getting Bombers autograph and he told me a bit about the practise match they had the day before against Hawthorn (which I didnt know about obviously due to the 21st)... real nice guy. And a great family day too visiting Forssy's relatives. :D :thumbsu:

I agree with Deb, the all-of-you moment was a good one. Eating the massive salad roll was another.

Gold.

Please remind me the context of this. I only vaugely remember it but re-call loving it at the time. Who, what, when, where? Cheers.

Personally, I will always love Bomber and be indebted to him. Watching that Saints v Cats re-cap, it is remarkable the faith he had in his plan and his boys back in 2003. Showed he knew what he was up to. Thanks for the memories Bomber! You helped save our club!

Post match press conference (don't remember if it was a win or a loss). My guess would be it was 2006. The comment was re: Brad Ottens, who was having a pretty ordinary patch. The delivery was pure Bomba...didn't have to raise his voice to intimidate.

But to depart from the standard press conference company line to go into bat for his player was an indication that he was the type of coach that players would run through a brick wall for.

!

This is only a guess, but I'm picturing him out on KP ground with the media around him saying it.....

Cant for the life remember which player he was talking about.....

Byrnes? Matthew Spencer?? :D

LMAO, found this on Ottens Wiki Page:

After debuting in Round 1, and becoming the one thousandth player to play a game for Geelong, he again struggled to have a major impact in the first year at his new club. He was the subject of an infamous post-match press conference by Mark Thompson in 2005. Here Thompson defended Ottens by saying "For some silly reason, you people want to assassinate him. It's just rubbish. You people, all of you, ALL OF YOU, leave him alone!"[citation needed] Some see it as a defining moment for Brad.

So you were pretty much correct MC. :thumbsu:

During the finals last season both Bomba and SJ were being interviewed on the Sunday Footy Show. They were somewhere in country Victoria and towards the end of the interview his earpeice stopped working so he spent the rest of the interview trying to fix the earpeice while SJ held it together. In the end they gave up and SJ just told Bomber to point to the camera and wave. The pathetic wave Bomba gave was brilliant, err, guess you had to be there.

The other moment has to be as the players were walking out on the ground before the 09 GF he gave this big goofy smile and thumbs up to someone taking a photo. Considering it was minutes before bouncedown it was good to see.

Has to be when he was shown munching on a sandwich, absolute classic.

Reading this thread made me realise how much I'm going to miss him :(
Me too. Nothing but admiration for that man; don't think I've felt quite so sad after a coach's departure before.

I think others have already posted all of my favourite moments - "ALL OF YOU!", his extremely classy speeches after the 2007 and 2009 GFs, and jumping on the table as the siren went in '09. Wonderful stuff. The footage of him fiddling with that machine during the press conference is classic too, I cracked up when they showed it on Before the Game.

Thanks for everything, Bomber. You'll be missed.

I liked that he never got tense in the coaches box, especially when compared to Laidley, Eade, Malthouse et al. He never seemed particularly phased by a loss, and even after a blistering win he say something understated like - 'yeah, they did Ok today'. I like that he enjoyed watching our team play - at times he seemed more like a supporter than the coach.
