The Lions' head honchos met with the AFL bigwigs on Friday. There is simply no way this does not have the AFL's support.

How quickly things can change, though. The AFL said the same about Nick Stevens' case as well.

Also, amidst the "won't somebody think of the children" arm-waving, I suspect a lot of people are overlooking this line from the club's press release:

There is still the massive issue here of sacking someone who was in hospital due to a mental condition.

Yes, I understand that he had extended his stay until the decision was made, but that works both ways, obviously there is no reason to leave rehab if your life, read : football, has basically been taken away from you when you're in such a mental state.

He is a fool, but he could get away with a decent amount of cash out of this. Again, whether that comes out of the TPP for the next couple of years is the biggest issue.

Could Fev end up at a stand-alone VFL club like Frankston?

Now I point out first that there are two stand-alone (non AFL Aligned) clubs in the VFL, Frankston and Port Melbourne - he wouldn't be taken by Port as they already have a number of key forwards.

However, Frankston is a young side without too much experience in their squad.

If he (personally) got his act together, he could return to Melbourne, play as Full Forward for Frankston - getting a match every round - and if he has that killer season, then maybe one more AFL club might give him a shot.

If not, he then kicks on in VFL or suburban footy earning a quid.

no chance to play again,the afl have been trying to get rid of him for years and it would be a very very brave club to pick him up and go against the afl wishes,remember the afl gets what it wants or else.

That would a very Kevin Sheedy thing to do.
Although, Fev would be much better being back in Melbourne and surrounding himself with friends and family. Not sure Sydney would be the best place for him to be, even if his rehab is progressing well in 12 months time.

Because they have sacked him, they have to pay out his entire contract in one go, instead of spread over the 2 years remaining of his contract. The AFL will allow this payment to be counted across the 2 years, instead of just in 2011, which is how it should be done according to the salary cap rules.

His behaviour has been about the same level as Mitch Clark's in the past 12 months, as far as actual proven/documented incidents go, and he sure as hell is well behind Albert Proud who was given way more chances by the Lions than Fev has been.

This is not for Brisbane to decide.

There will be an Andrew Lovett style legal case with this one. Unless there were specified terms & conditions in his contract, Fev has the ground to stay on here.

The Police cleared Fev of any wrong doing in that case.

If Fev's legal counsel can prove that the Lions went to the AFL after this case & tried to have him de-registered, it would make for very interesting reading.

Fev is getting the help he needs - so far he has been in rehab for 51 days. However long it takes, Brisbane has to support the efforts he is making, not tossing him out to the kerb without any care or responsibility.

Troubled Brendan Fevola sacked by the Brisbane Lions

Alastair Lynch, Velocity Sports General Manager and a former Lions forward himself, said he did not accept the decision as a legal termination.

He said Fevola was shattered by the decision because all he wanted to do was play football.

"Brendan accepts that he has let his club and his teammates down but is committed to making amends and has always felt that the first step in making things right was his commitment to an extensive rehabilitation program to combat his battle with depression," Lynch said.

"He has stayed 51 days in a voluntary rehabilitation clinic and had reached the stage where he felt the next step was to return to football.

"He was fully prepared to return to the club under whatever conditions the club chose to impose."

Lynch confirmed that prior to the meeting with Lions coach Michael Voss and football chief Dean Warren he had decided to offer to play the entire 2011 season in the Lions reserves and accept whatever behavioural clauses the club wished to impose in an effort to return to AFL football in 2012. Fevola made this offer to Voss during his meeting tonight.

"After tonight's decision Brendan will stay in the clinic in the immediate future while weighing up his options," Lynch said. "Our No 1 priority now is to ensure Brendan continues his treatment and returns to good health."
