It didn't work last year with Richmond v Carlton, and it certainly won't work again this year. As expected the best game of the round was the Grand Final rematch and it should have been the season opener too.
There was almost 87,000 people at Richmond Vs Carlton last year, Which was on a Thursday compared to the Friday night Geelong Vs Hawthorn grand final rematch at the MCG which only 69,500 fans came to see.

Exactly how didn't Richmond vs Carlton work?

exactly.

It's the perfect oppotunity for the AFL to maximise an attendance that would otherwise be about 15-20k smaller during the season. Particularly with Richmond under performing in 2009 i think it's a great time to have this game again.
I reckon despite the whole Judd, Fev factor this game could still draw around 80k next year

If the AFL were smart, yes.

Would sell out the MCG or Dome. Nothing surer.

Or we could just wait for round 2 so that Buddy is back to kick a massive bag against the Dons.

Hawthorn vs Melbourne round 1 would be nice, we have played them in round 1 a fair few times in the past, wouldn't have a clue though, when is the fixture released?

cant wait for us to show the rest of the comp how to dismantle this brisbane forward line.. will be great to watch. fev will be crying by 3 quarter time.. :p

22 games eh? thats a brave call

Yeah right. That's what someone told me in 1993!

I don't agree, that game will sell out any time in the first 4 or 5 weeks.

If the AFL were smart (and they are) they will leave some of these types of match-up's (ala Carlton v Brisbane in Melbourne) to later rounds to bump crowd figures up then.

Everyone already wants to go round 1, so you have maximised your crowds already.

Brisbane Lions V. Carlton - Easter Thursday match - round 2 at the Gabba

BRENDAN Fevola's much-anticipated match-up with former side Carlton will take place as a round 2 Easter Thursday blockbuster at the Gabba.

The Carlton faithful will have to wait just a week into the 2010 season for clearly the most anticipated match of the season.

But while the Blues will be glad to take on Fevola's Lions early in the year and then move on, they will be without suspended captain Chris Judd.

A draft of the draw will go out to broadcasters at the end of this week, with clubs also to be given their schedule early next week before the official release on October 30.

Some bloke on the Hawks board reckons Melbourne V's Hawthorn for rd 1.

I hope we play Carlton in round 1,2 or 3. Reason being is that Fev and Judd always kill us. We should handle Carlton (as most other clubs will) without those 2.

Could handle Melbourne in round 1 - good omen after 2008.

Would be spewing if we get Essendon round 1 and Franklin's 2 game bogus suspension counts for two cames against his bitch.
