Buddy Franklin could well become the greatest forward to play the game by the time his career is over. He has a credible claim to becoming better than both Gary Ablett Snr and Carey who are widely considered the best forwards in the modern age.

Currently, Franklin has 724 career goals in 226 games at an average of 3.2 goals per game, a statistic not all that impressive in a historical sense, yet dwarfs any other forward currently playing who's been in the system for a sustained period. His goal average in this era compared to his peers is significantly Higher than both Carey and Ablett (Dunstall, Lockett, Lloyd all shared similar goal averages).

If Franklin were to see out his contract, which is the most likely scenario barring horrific injury or unforeseen problems, he would end his career with a record something like;
Worst case scenario (constant injuries, dropped, out of form playing 15 or less games per year) he would still get to his 300th and have kicked 900-1000 goals.
Best case- his form doesn't dip, swans make some finals and despite his age and decreasing disposal count he stays deep and his goal count remains he could reach 360-380 games with 1100-1250 goals.
I'd reason he'd finish up somewhere in the middle at 340ish games with 1050-1100 goals to his name.
A constant that Geelong and North fans may be keen to remind us is Franklins poor contested marking compared to the other 2, and fair enough he doesn't hold a candle. But I don't believe that matters at the end of the day considering I believe he is as much a game breaker as the other two. Does it matter if it was a 1 handed grab from Carey or a buddy sprint and curved kick on the left boundary that changes the game? Every poster reading this has watched their side's fate be at the mercy of Buddy's ability at some point.

Obviously I'm a huge fan of Buddy, and I'm keen to read how do you think he will be remembered when his time is up? Could the great 2 become 3?

EDIT: in current AFL system Buddy is 24% better than nearest opponent in goal average;
Franklin 3.2
Cameron 2.5
J.Riewoldt 2.4
J.Kennedy 2.2
Roughead/N.Riewoldt 2.2
Pavlich 1.9
Not since Hudson in the early 70's has the differential between goal scorers averages been so great.
For example:
00/90
Modra 3.5
Lloyd 3.4
Richardson 2.8
Carey 2.6

80s/90s
Lockett 4.8
Dunstall 4.6
Ablett 4.15

He's a gun. Has been for many years. Remains one today. Best forward of his generation........comfortably.

However, not even best Hawthorn forward ever so no he will not end up GOAT.

If Franklin wins the Coleman medal this year, how many past players have 2 Coleman medals each at two different clubs? If he kicks 4 goals this week against Brisbane (which is likely) then he will overtake both Wayne Carey and Peter Hudson and move into 17th spot on the all-time AFL goal kicking leader-board.

1. Tony Locket - 1360
2. Gordon Coventry - 1299
3. Jason Dunstall - 1254
4. Doug Wade - 1057
5. Gary Ablett 1030
6. Jack Titus 970
7. Matthew Lloyd 926
8. Leigh Matthews 915
9. Peter McKenna 874
10. Bernie Quinlan 817
11. Matthew Richardson 800
12. Kevin Bartlett 778
13. Saverio Rocca 748
14. Barry Hall 746
15. Stephen Kernahan 738
16. Bill Mohr 735
17. Peter Hudson 727
18. Wayne Carey 727
19. Lance Franklin 724 goals (3.2 goals per game)

It's a shame he didn't stay a one club man because I think he would have comfortably taken that mantle. I remember a radio convo with Dunstall a couple of years ago when he stated Franklin is a better athlete and forward than he ever was. Whether Chief was just being humble or not, I agree with him.

There has to be some sort of mathematical equation someone could come up with to work out how dominant Franklin is in this era compared to past players. (Say take a top ten goal kickers from each season then compare against others to work out how dominant he has actually been) his figures will never be as impressive as the players from the nineties but a five bag hall is like 8 or 9 back then so surely someone can come up with a formula to compare

He was never surpassing Dunstall or Hudson even if he stayed. Doesn't mean he isn't an all time great of the game. Just means there are some ahead of him.

Well he is in 17th spot so I guess he must be the best.

What is it with Hawthorn posters looking for recognition?
Lose your brown and gold hard on mate, see how I typed big words like "potential" and "end of career". Don't make this a hawthorn shitfights thread please were talking about a superstar who plays for Sydney.

It's apples and oranges and we'll never have a general consensus...but a solid argument could be made that Franklin would have kicked as many if not more goals than Lockett/Dunstall etc. if he was allowed as much space in the forward line as them.

If Carey and Franklin both played the modern game under today's pressure and defence, I would suggest Franklin might come out on top.

At the moment, you might rank Carey but in a few years Franklin's longevity will put him well ahead.

Buddy will be the GOAT with regards to Indigenous players. Maybe he already is.

Greatest player since 2000.

Will be top 10 OAT by career end if no serious injuries.

Aside from the statistics, this player has done things in footy on many ocaissions that has not been done by anyone I have seen.
Watching for nearly 40 years.

Ok boss what you say goes ;)

You want to compare him to Ablett Snr?
Ok then, Gaz moved to full forward full time at the age of 32, during that first year he kicked the second fastest century of all time averaging almost 7.5 goals PER GAME and if not for injury and suspension probably would have kicked the 150.
First full time year at full forward.
At the age of 32.
He then kicked back to back to back centuries and won 3 Colemans in a row, aged 32, 33 and 34.
Which is a record.
The rest of his career he was played as a winger or forward flanker with periods leading from the square and had kicked 300 more goals from 20 more games than Franklin, who almost exclusively has played as a full forward.
Not even close, and that doesn't even bring in names like Lockett, Dunstall etc

AG would probably have a say in that although both are pretty awesome.
