Well guys, the options were clear. Next weekend we were either going to some stinking hot ground with sh*te facilities in a dump of a city best described as 'God's ars*hole', or we were going to Darwin.

Can't be too disappointed though about the game though. The main reason we lost was poor disposal, and that can be fixed up. A few brain farts by specific players were a bit of a worry (eg. Parker playing on when surrounded, Schammer trying to take on Judd), and the fact that of 7 umpires on the ground, not one could see the monster gap between Medhurst and the 50m line when he dobbed the goal was par for the course (FFS, I saw it and I was up the other end of the ground near the boundary fence), but the fact that we didn't let the game blow out in the final quarter when it could very easily have, and we gave ourselves a huge shot at winning the game was pretty encouraging. What to do with Sandilands remains a problem. He aint a full forward's bootlace.

The loser got to play in Joondalup

Have to agree... problem is he is not a Ruckmans bootlace either. Sure.. he can take the bounces in the middle.. you would think that would be his strength... but no... Cox got just as much of the ball... and even when Sandilands does win it... ruck contests are usually 50/50 balls anyway... unless you are Michael Gardiner and you can palm it down players throats. Unfortunately for you thats where Sandilands effectiveness starts and ends. He cannot run. He cannot mark. Mobile ruckmen like Cox/Gardiner just absolutely tear him to shreads running around the ground. Sandilands cannot keep up. He has put on what 7 kgs? Why??? Its only going to make him slower... and it sure as hell hasnt made him stronger because Darren Glass is about 25 kilos lighter and just pushed him around like a rag doll.

You lost the 1 big player you could least afford to. Troy Simmonds. Some will say you had no choice in that... but I disagree. If Simmonds was happy he would have stayed.

The thing that has me most worried about 211 in the ruck is that he is either really stupid, the rovers aren't going where they are meant to, or he is being told to ruck the way he is.
At one boundary throw in right in front of me, all of the smalls were around the edge of the packs, 211 was in front of cox or seaby (and didn't have cox grabbing him for once) and instead of hitting it to a rover, he hit it straight down in front of him, and it was 3 to 1 WCE to Freo. Even in the pregame warm up, most of his hitouts were going straight down. Is it Eastaugh/Connolly/211's fault? Doesn't matter. Will they fix it in the next few weeks/months. Bloody hope so.

Was not at the game but when I read posts like this - it is a real worry. 211 palming is pathetic and he did the same b***** thing the whole of last year. I just used to shake my head in total despair.

In my view, this is such a simple thing to fix. Any decent head coach would have put a rocket up both the ruck coaches and 211. This is typical of one of the many reasons I do not have confidence in CC as a coach.

Rob, as a former Joondalup resident, let me just say... um.. no, actually, spot on.

I guess its a touch unfair to jump all over someone after one game, but i've been saying for a long time that pound for pound, Sandilands is an utter waste of space. If you're 211cm and can't ruck, and can't play up forward, there isn't a great deal left for you on the football field? Maybe he'd make a handy outsized wingman?

Simmonds wanted big money and a FIVE year deal. We weren't stupid enough to commit 5 years to a 26 year old mediocre predictable ruckman/poor marking forward with a dodgey knee so richmond stepped in. Simmonds would have been a handy back up and is a very good kick for goal but 5 years? No thanks.

Paul Johnson on the other hand, now there's a quality big man in the making.

Haha, Troy Simmonds. Yep, he would have made the world of difference. I'm SO happy he got traded so Connolly can give Murphy time at FF. And Murphy will be miles and miles better than Simmonds, maybe even as soon as next season.

Given that CC actually gives him time on the field, which concerns about Friday night. He should have been on all night and only coming off for a breather.

If he dont start getting some game time, he will at Carlton or Essendon and we'll get McPheed again.

preseason game mean very little. It is hard to take anything away from preseason games. Leading up to the game i thought that WCE weren't that interested in the game, but freo were fired up for a big preseason.
Considering the result i would have been very concerned however
It is clear that freo have a lot of worked to to do in jelling the team together and maybe weren't as keen on winning the game as i thought pre game.
My biggest concerns to come out of the game was A) Haselby B) Murphy not been given a good run C) Murphy appearing to be intimidated by his own team mates, which caused him not to attack the ball when players like pavlich were around D) Trying Sandi in the forward line is good idea in preseason game however it clearly didn't work and if he desn't it improve the game plan should be abandoned come the start of the season. E) the many other faults in freo game.

Anyway it is only preseason

Joondalup is where old people go to die. In that vein, it is a bit like Mt Hawthorn and Mandurah.

Yup.. we have just about the youngest playing side in the AFL... nice one  Usually when people try have a crack it at least has at least 1% truth to it... but this is about as stupid as it gets.
i wasn't talking about the playing list

If you were talking players though

Fremantle would appear to be where the players and coaches for that matter die slowly, thats why the smart ones tend to leave :)

I was out of town and missed the whole show. How did our forward structure work? Did Pavlich, Polak and Murphy do anything of note? How bad is Medhurst's neck injury?

Oh, and congrats to the Weagles, enjoy the trip to Darwin.

I didn't see the game at all, being stuck on the wrong side of the country and dealing with some personal issues on Friday, but I wondered about (C)

Is it possible that Murphy was just finding his feet in the forward line structure and/or was instructed to avoid creating big packs by leading his man away from the spaces that other frowards already had? He's still young, and still learning the Freo set up after all. Or am I just too hopeful?

I havent heard anything & just wanted to know how Josh Carr went against the Eagles.

Thanks

Very well, next best player after Pavlich imo.

Just what we need.. shame everyone else sucked on the night.

Thanks for that, I hope he plays well for you guys like he did for us.

Although I do admit I hope he doesnt play well against us :)

Cheers

Thought Woodsy would have had more of a run in the forward line. Was only watching on tv so may have missed a bit.

Freo need another forward badly!!! Pav is the only one who looks like taking a mark, and with Sandi doing nothing, JLo will need to spend more time in the ruck. Murphy is a good prospect but you cant expect much from him, 15-20 goals for the season would be sensational.

Could McPharlin be used forward? Thought he was worth a crack there when Waters was kicking goals on him.

Sandi is a real worry. He has to get on the angry pills and toughen up quick. Softest player in the AFL pound for pound IMO. Couldn't even outmark Michael Johnson in the intra club.
