With absolutely no proven history of being able to handle any occasion I expect this to follow a similar path.

We'll be panicky, fumble on most occasions, attempt to show fake aggression and toughness and look like a bunch of schoolboys playing against men.

Hawthorn will get out to a big, big lead and late in the game (when the heat has truly gone from the contest) a few of our players will dare show themselves and show our 'never give in' attitude.

All in all, just another learning experience for our mighty club to go through.

Ken walks in, wearing the same expression we've seen since 2014. The “we’re disappointed but not panicking” face. Maybe a polo change-up, maybe not. Who knows anymore.

Yeah look, obviously that’s not the performance we wanted to bring tonight... and by “not the performance,” I mean we didn’t show up until halfway through the third, then acted surprised when the game was already gone. Full credit to Hawthorn. They played like a side that wanted to win a game of football. Novel concept.

Reporter: Ken, fans are again frustrated with another slow start. Any thoughts?

Yeah, look, it’s a pattern we’ve seen a bit, and we don’t love it. We came out flat, didn’t match their intensity, and spent most of the first half looking like we were reading from last year’s script. We’ve had a chat about starting better… for about 37 rounds now. So we’ll review that. Again.

Reporter: Hawthorn seemed to slice through your defense with ease. What happened there?

Yeah, they were clean, they moved it quick, and we looked like we were still in the warm-up jog. They played brave footy, we played… reactive footy. And you just can’t do that at this level. Especially not in front of 40,000 Port fans who now need to be talked off a ledge.

Reporter: Fans are calling for change—what’s your response?

Look, we understand the fans are passionate. They love this club. They live and breathe it. So do we. I get it—it's been a long road of nearlys, maybes, and “just not our day.” But trust me, we’re working hard. We’re building. We’re not panicking. There’s a process. There’s always a process. Somewhere.

Reporter: Anything to take from the game, positives?

Yeah, I thought the boys showed a bit in the back half. There was some spirit, some fight, just enough to make you think “maybe next week.” But again, too little, too late. You can’t win games in 15-minute bursts, unless you’re playing North. And we weren’t.

Reporter: What’s the message to the fans after that showing?

Stick with us. Please. We know it’s frustrating. We know it feels like Groundhog Day. But this group cares. I care. We’ll keep working. We’ll keep believing. And hopefully, at some point, that translates into four quarters of football you don’t need a stiff drink to sit through.
