Kolodjashnij tonight put together one of the worst finals performances I have seen in recent memory from a Geelong player.

Miers was extremely disapppointing as well.

Henderson well played. Arguably his best game for the Cats.
Agree, Kolodjashnij had the mother of all Barry Crockers. Stats say he had 4 clangers and 50% disposal efficiency but I reckon you could add 4 half clangers for his slow ball movement. The step up to finals is too much for him.

He surely knew time was tight...I just think he didn't believe he could make the distance. Thats the only excuse I can find for him.

Parfitt did the same on the 1/4 time siren. He should have known time was tight...or don't we communicate these things..?
I reckon Parfitt knew he didn't mark it, and didn't expect it to be paid.

Don't think it helped in the last quarter that Selwood was battling a finger injury and ultimately finished the game on the bench - they showed footage at 3/4 time of the trainer on the ground trying to put the finger back in but couldn't get it, he then went to the bench and they still struggled with getting the finger back in

They showed Joel getting his fingers strapped together and not sure if they managed to get his finger back in or not, as it didn't look like they were sitting flat beside each other during said taping

According to the AFL app game timeline, Joel came off injured before Marshall kicked his goal & he was listed as injured on the interchange

Ultimately, Joel played only 67% TOG, and feel that he was definitely missed in the latter stages of the match

Hopefully the injury isn't too bad & he's available for our next match

Its fine to say who was on Motlop etc but ultimately we are just too big in defence. We effectively run with 4 guys who are immobile (Taylor, Henderson, Kolo and Henry) plus a Stewart who can play smaller but speed isn't his strength. The only guy who can properly play small is O'Connor and when that isn't going well we are screwed and get cut up small forwards as always. Then we play Tuohy out of position because our backline is deficient and we can't move anyone out.

The problem is even when Taylor retires we're screwed as we will get exposed by big forwards as the others struggle on the bigger, more powerful forwards. Hence, it will fix one problem but create another.

You forgot Bews. I agree Touhey is not quick enough to be spending so much time midfield drifting forward. Henry is an absolute liability,. good only for spoils, after that his brain jolts and fries. He spends the most time benched of any player other than Steven. Not up to it even with the impressive high flys.
So those advocating to drop Harry need to have a long hard think about what structure they would choose instead. Pipe dreams, just can't see the MC doing it. Could have once advocated dropping Henderson myself, but he has come into his own - although not excellent below the knees. How many times did they fall over? Jesus, Mary and Joseph I was calling them for everything!

I'm sure the players have a fairly acute idea of these things, but to my eye that Duncan one was really borderline; like I said he did hit his target, albeit 1 second too late.

Ive seen him score from that range I reckon.

Didn’t watch the game because I knew what would happen. See the score after the siren, and it’s the least surprising thing I have ever seen. Until Geelong recognise that the game style is completely unsuited to finals and many of the selected players unsuited to their current role, we remain an AFL joke. Soft as butter.
Could have watched last years QF and got the same impression. Pre match selections were bad. Some match ups were baffling. During the game, we didn't take our chances. One of these players who has been average all year steps up and is the match winner, and we made some horrendous tactical decisions that cost us the victory.

I expect we win the SF comfortably, then bomb the PF. Its the Scott way in finals.

Seriously think we need at least Close and Clark in the team. Need pace and pressure. How easily Richmond, Sydney and now Port have run the ball out of the f50 is a massive concern.
100%

Our defence is too tall and too slow, apart from Stewart, no one in the defence will run the ball. Ironically, Henderson was the most aggressive defender we had on the ground which says a lot.

Henry simply cannot play at this level. He has no idea what is going on and consequently gets taken holding the ball over and over. For some reason he will not be dropped.

If we wont drop Henry, we need to drop Kolo. He is an absolute liability with ball in hand and got toweled defensively.

If we refuse to drop Kolo then we need to drop Taylor. He did keep Dixon relatively quiet but that was more luck than anything.

We need to find a way to play Thuoy in the back line where he belongs; maybe then we will be able to get the ball off the half back line.

I actually dislike the disposal efficiency stats as "dumb" footballers who dished off the ball to another guy in relative trouble are rewarded just the same as if they had dished the ball off to someone in a good position.

Best case scenario,

Brisbane beat Richmond

Richmond beat St. Kilda or West Coast.

Geelong beat Collingwood or WCE.

Port Adelaide beat Richmond

Geelong beat Brisbane.

Geelong beat Port Adelaide in the big dance.

We can do this !!!!

Rewatching that and I would have to put a bit of blame on Gaz too, he is actually calling for Parfitt to handball it off

Knights cops heat for midfield failures but where are the people criticising Scarlett who continually matches slow taller defenders against blokes like Motlop, Papley and Castagna yet has O'Connor playing on Jack Reiwoldt.
Don't you know you can't criticise Scarlett - he's a club legend and should take over as senior coach tomorrow...

Seems that Scarlett & Enright kinda don't cop the same criticism as the other coaches do

God hes a bad coach.

Unprecedented...but sack him mid week, put scarlett is as interim?

( Note i havent thought if contracts pay outs etc)

That centre square set up with the game on the line of Atkins, Dalhaus, Duncan.might be the worst coaching decision in AFL history.

Typical Scott trying to outsmart everyone and have his coaching decisions be the reason geeling win.
Ridiculous comment. Clearly not a bad coach. Would be picked up be at least fifty percent of the clubs in a heartbeat. He and his team have done a solid job. clearly he is not a GREAT coach but it’s ridiculous and naive to call him a BAD coach based on the evidence. Coaching team made mistakes but the majority of this is on the players. Port willed themselves to win and we didn’t as a playing group. The coaching panel and the team we have are good enough, but the competition is so tight, you have to dig that bit deeper and we weren’t prepared to across the board. I’m gutted, but the reality is so many other clubs would love to have the opportunities we’ve had over the last nine years - now, if we want to be GREAT, then they have to find something more - I don’t think that is the coach in fairness. Hawkins misses goals, not Scott. Guthrie turns ball over for a goal, not Scott. Henry forget that he was in a final and went for a little waltz through the centre, getting pinged easily; Chris Scott didn’t do that. Our players missed the moments and although the coaching could improve, if they take those opportunities, then we win. They didn’t. Just my view

I had some sympathy with questioning the coach when we got killed early in finals. There's not much he can do about bad finishing though.

On the other hand there needs to be massive questions over how Atkins, Dahlhaus and Duncan was our centre square combo at the critical time in the last quarter. I like that we left Danger forward but where were Selwood, Guthrie and Parfitt? The 3 we choose have 15 centre clearances for the year combined. Guthrie, Selwood and Parfitt each have more than that on their own.

While it’s hard to take the loss I am sure, at least your team is making finals consistently and wins a ton of games every year. Plus a purple patch when you won premierships within recent memory. Most Football fans can’t enjoy that kind of success. Plus you’re not out of it yet, and surely Hawkins can’t play worse than today

He surely knew time was tight...I just think he didn't believe he could make the distance. Thats the only excuse I can find for him.

We'll never know the truth. It's entirely possible Mitch and Brandon were just trying to do the team thing and that there was no cowardice behind it.

But it's also a fact that there are some players who are scared of the moment. Who don't want the responsibility. Who would rather hand it off to another player not because they're selfless, but because the don't want the pressure on them and are looking for an "out". This can be true even of good players. So I don't discount the possibility that that was the case for both of them. Sadly.

Nothing will change next week. Those expecting Taylor to be dropped, forget it. I reckon we almost might go in unchanged.

We'll go out lamely and lament another year of misguided hope.

Yeah that's what disappoints me most. The team that lost tonight was not much different to the same team that's lots the past few years. What do we expect has changed? Menegolas better? Guthrie? Credit to them for good years but we looked great mid year, and we're trialing new blood. Close, clark, narkle, Simpson fogarty. Krueger was looking good in vfl and threatening, even Evan's was emergency. They aren't stars but they offer something different. Even Steven who was shithouse against Sydney, at least its potentially a different outcome.
Come last round and finals, back to same old.....no balls.
Scott's decision to drop Mooney and Milburn won us a flag 10 years ago, has coached conservatively ever since.
