Could have watched last years QF and got the same impression. Pre match selections were bad. Some match ups were baffling. During the game, we didn't take our chances. One of these players who has been average all year steps up and is the match winner, and we made some horrendous tactical decisions that cost us the victory.

I expect we win the SF comfortably, then bomb the PF. Its the Scott way in finals.

What was the weird selections this year? No weird selections, no excuses, just not good enough

I had some sympathy with questioning the coach when we got killed early in finals. There's not much he can do about bad finishing though.

On the other hand there needs to be massive questions over how Atkins, Dahlhaus and Duncan was our centre square combo at the critical time in the last quarter. I like that we left Danger forward but where were Selwood, Guthrie and Parfitt? The 3 we choose have 15 centre clearances for the year combined. Guthrie, Selwood and Parfitt each have more than that on their own.

Selwood was off injured, re-did his digit.

Didn’t watch the game because I knew what would happen. See the score after the siren, and it’s the least surprising thing I have ever seen. Until Geelong recognise that the game style is completely unsuited to finals and many of the selected players unsuited to their current role, we remain an AFL joke. Soft as butter.

He's at the end of his career and may only have 1 game left.
I thought he beat Dixon again tonight though, despite being half the player he was 5 years ago.
I only hope Henry and maybe Kolodjashnij are ready to step up into his role after he has gone.

Taylor was great tonight. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool.

Kolo was deplorable, had he kicked that goal it would have ignited the entire team. Blah.

While it’s hard to take the loss I am sure, at least your team is making finals consistently and wins a ton of games every year. Plus a purple patch when you won premierships within recent memory. Most Football fans can’t enjoy that kind of success. Plus you’re not out of it yet, and surely Hawkins can’t play worse than today

Thanks for the kind thoughts, but I'd rather the team bottom out and reload for a genuine crack like Brisbane, or Port. Losing finals year after year is getting extremely old, and to me it's not something to be proud of.

Duncan especially is a terrible player to put in a centre bounce in a crunch contested game where the opposition is hitting every contested at a million miles.

Selwood was on the bench trying to get his finger fixed - he only played 67% TOG and came off injured before the Marshall goal

Hoping he's ok to play next week because they had a lot of problems trying to get his finger back in after he dislocated it in the 3rd quarter

Guthrie was also on the bench at the same time with at least one of those centre bounces - I checked the AFL app which shows who's on the bench

Atkins was ok tonight. He played better than Menegola and Guthrie I reckon.

Both him and Guthrie had very poor nights. After such good years it was back to the 2019 and before for them both.

Ridiculous. Guthrie and Menegola were fine (and historically I haven't been Sam's biggest fan). It was a scrappy game with high pressure disposals but apart from Guthrie's turnover in the 3rd they used it pretty well and worked really hard. Menegola was really important helping the defence and Guthrie had game high tackles (9) and 4 clearances. They weren't great but they were solid.

That was mentally draining. I've wasted too many hours getting my hopes up and probably fooling myself. Geelong did well to make the finals. Looking forward to the draft hoping that we don't trade our first round picks for ageing show ponies. We need some players with genuine pace and we need a decent ruckman.

Being at the game was so Frustrating. Last half of second quarter our midfield had got on top but in a familiar tale we pissed away the chances (2008 anyone?). Got to within 2 midway through last then lost a soft centre clearance which went straight down for a goal. At the ground Miers and Dahlhaus nowhere near it And seemed soft and easily pushed off the ball. I’d drop both of em, we looked old and slow. Forward setup is crap they can’t convert. We need to face the fact that the list and clashing are not quite good enough. So why not go for it next week and bring in Close (should never have been out), Clarke and I am begging for them to bring in SDK. Close into his usual role, Clarke to a wing, Blitz into the backline perminantly, and SDK to full forward. FFS do something different it is not going to win it as it is.

9 defenders in the team and a lack of pace, bringing in Atkins when Steven has had a better year and Close is a better pressure player. Esava for Stanley was the right call. Not making more changes to the team that struggled against ****ing Sydney wasn't.

Port completely demolished us from half time. Clearly the far better team. We got a couple of arsey goals late, which made the score line seem respectable, and they were a bit unlucky going forward themselves. The whole team fell apart. It wasn't just a Hawkins issue.

Demolished us so completely yet we won contested and uncontested possession, more contested marks, more marks inside 50 and same number of inside 50’s.

I'd throw caution to the wind next week. Bring someone like Tarca in as a small forward to debut. Bring some energy. If we do the same thing again we'll lose so lets try something different. Drop a defender. Maybe even two. Bring two more mids in.

True, that’s probably what’s due if you don’t go the distance this year. Can also be exciting watching a young team rise though
