Duncan especially is a terrible player to put in a centre bounce in a crunch contested game where the opposition is hitting every contested at a million miles.
Agree, he is terrible defensively.

I come in peace, and ask you supporters this question with genuine curiosity:

Gary Rohan has an atrocious record in finals.

He went missing again tonight with 5 disposals.

If you're selecting the team for the semi final, do you keep him in the side. And if you elect to do so, why?

Your correct - however the cupboard is pretty bare -there is not much to bring in

Seeing your a neutral - gives us your HONEST opinion on Geelongs game style - do you like it - are they good to watch - bad to watch - terrible to watch

Tells us what you actually think - not just for the likes etc

Mate football supporting is driven by emotion. It's the entire lifeblood of this tribalistic pastime. You can't seriously expect Cats fans to log on after another finals disappointment and post calm, unemotional analysis along the lines of "not the result we hoped for but ultimately it was an honourable loss. Better luck next time".

Of course people are going to react like this.
Hmm! So emotional uninformed personal attacks are par for the course? Nup! They should be called out for what they are.

Can we just play every player in their true position where they are strongest and stop playing slow footy. Would go along way to winning the game instead of fking about playing players in wrong positions.

Yeah but how will Scotty claim the "master coach" title without some sleight of hand and rabbits out of hats?

Our best scoring chance is when we win the centre clearance because it means the ball is coming in quick for a change.

Do you know how many times we started with Stanley, Selwood, Dangerfield and Guthrie at the centre bounces?
(Genuine question)

Not enough

Didn't help things though that Selwood dislocated a finger in the 3rd quarter and he wasn't quite right after that, ultimately having an early night when he finished on the bench - missed him when things got tight in the last quarter

Dude, he destroyed your argument. It wasn't a lack of options that cost us. It was a lack of basic skills.
So a different option couldnt have changed the outcome.
Are you serious.
didnt destroy only in your perception.

Did Guthrie win one clearance? He has been outstanding this season breaking away from the middle. Tonight I saw him just play a very defensive, reactive game. There was none of the flair we've seem this year at all.

He won 4 clearances behind only Selwood and Danger for us with 6 each. He wasn't brilliant but nobody on the ground really was for either team.

Let's be honest. We played a good team on their home deck and should've been 4 goals up at half time. We weren't and we paid the price. You can wish we were more compared in the 3rd or that particular players contributed more but in the end that game was decided almost entirely by our inability to finish our good work and Menegola and Guthrie weren't too blame there.

B: Bews, Blicavs, O'Connor
HB: Stewart, Henderson, Clark
C: Menegola, Guthrie, Narkle
HF: Parfitt, DeKoning, Rohan
F: Dangerfield, Hawkins, Close

Foll: Stanely, Duncan, Selwood

Int: Dahlhaus, Henry, Atkins, Ablett

Ins - Clark, DeKoning, Close, Narkle

Outs - Kolojashnij, Taylor, Miers, Tuohy
No way I'd put DeKoning for a first game in a knock-out final unless it came down to injuries. His season is dusted, he needs to debut during the home and away season. I think Close offers more zip, pressure and x-factor than say an Atkins. Tuohy stays in, one of the tall defenders must be out, either Taylor or Kolo. I prefer Taylor to taking out the gorilla's. Means we can play Blicavs further up the ground when needed. Kolo out for me.

Don't know if someone has already mentioned it.

Silver lining IMO is that I think Brisbane will beat Richmond tomorrow night and we can avoid them on the way to a GF potentially... clutching at straws.
Dude if Brisbane beat Richmond then there's no ****ing way that we'd get past Brisbane, but I like your optimism:)

Wow, looking back over the thread now that I've written my bullshit and I am surprised at just how vitriolic this place is; maybe I am more surprised that I am less disappointed...

Like I said, I thought we played a Finals brand of footy, but unfortunately we absolutely muffed our chances - more scoring shots than Port and we were on top for all but a brief (and admittedly decisive) period in the 3rd quarter.
I expected we'd lose, but I am oddly at peace with the way in which we lost; gave a good account of ourselves imo.

I'm not surprised by the vitriol, but I share your minority position on this match, CC.

Port's third quarter was immense. It had the lot—momentum, manic physical pressure, slick and quick ball movement. It was a 'premiership quarter', to use the old parlance. But despite the domination, they kicked just three goals and won the quarter by only two. It would have been an abject procession against almost any other team, but we absorbed the pressure well and were still in it by 3Q time. There was no capitulation.

We didn't lose around the ground, but in converting opportunities. Zip from six to Hawkins, three of which were there to be kicked. We had four more scoring shots than Port.

And it was interstate final—a finals win on the road is a rare bird. I didn't expect it, and overall thought they showed plenty of grit and metal.

Who do you bring in that kicks goals when the leagues best goal kicker was missing goals? We had lots of options to kick goals, but not enough of them converted.

Taylor was great tonight. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool.

Kolo was deplorable, had he kicked that goal it would have ignited the entire team. Blah.
Taylor was poor.
You lay it on Kolo, who has never scored a goal, but don't mention Hawkins who kicked 0-5??

I didn’t think Port were great but after half time they flogged us around the ball. They should have won by more in the end. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not solely blaming just Guthrie and Menegola (there were others far worse - Miers, Kolo, Rohan, Henry...) - merely pointing out that their games weren’t of the standard that saw them be AA or nominated. On tonight’s performance you wouldn’t think of selecting either in that team.

It's a passionate game - people get upset from time to time, especially with the stakes this high. If you don't want to read it, then maybe it's best you don't come on here. It's the same with every team. Not embarrassing - just passion and dissappointment. We invest heavily as supporters and it sucks to lose sometimes, hence we vent. There's nothing embarrassing about it - people are very invested in ths game and after a bad loss (in this case a huge final for us) sometimes we might say things that are over the top. Nothing wrong with having a vent IMO. Would be a boring world if we all golf clapped every perfomance.

Not what I meant, but if you feel better for that so be it

We finished the game kicking 5.12 42

We convert just half of those behinds and suddenly the score is 11.6 72 def Port 9.4 58

Failing to convert when we had control of the game is what cost us

Id say 3 of those were really bad misses 2 Hawkins and 1 Stanley but Selwood kicks a freak goal so that cancels one out. The others were all low % that I wouldn't expect to be goals. So it's not the reason. A better game plan and better team selection would of given us many more looks anyway so my point still stands

We are too system based

not just tonight but we always look our best when 15 points down and taking the game on
Riewoldt said tigers and port don’t need to play perfect football to score and win. Yet we do. We are stifled by our system and method. Apply pressure to that method it just seizes up. Can’t score in finals.

It was more about “who’s left we haven’t tried?”. Jenkins is too immobile, Esava just isn’t reliable enough so why not? Be a brave call.

I personally like it. When the cats are up and going its a free scoring, aesthetically pleasing game style that make for great viewing. You guys had a ripping game against us in Perth this season one of the best viewing games of the year, and we were just very fortunate to be leading at the final siren. The result could have easily fallen the other way.

Tommy Hawkins is copping and absolute pasting on the main board and he really shouldn't be. Yes, he had a bad game tonight, but he has been the dominant key forward all season and didn't win the Coleman by accident, he will bounce back.

The annoying thing is, if we beat Collingwood, we will play you guys and there is no chance in hell Hawkins kicks that badly for 2 games in a row 😔😂

You can analyse everything to within an inch of its life but in the end the game plan doesn't work in finals and the team selection isn't right. Which is all the coach
Situation solved. Scott out. Who’s your pick for next coach? Are you sure they’ll do better? Happy to be missing finals as well? Most other clubs outside Hawthorn, Richmond and WC would have loved to be init every year like us. They are hard to win, but I’m not sure it is the coach that is holding us back. Perhaps we are achieving as well as we can at the minute, at least until the players work out that they have it within them to win one.

Im just saying sav is a random unit that can be dangerous on his day and is worth his place in the side.
People dont agree thats fine.
How did today turn out?
