Richmonds system works because they don't have to be perfect.
It's just intensity and work rate and knowing when to go.
Hence why it works, they can be out of a game, absolutely dominated, for large periods but never be lost, always find a way back, because it doesn't rely on perfect execution.
Cats, and others, however, DO rely on perfect execution, for us to with the flag we MUST play perfectly at all times, every opportunity.
I can't remember who said that prior to finals but it stuck with me at the time and it's come flooding back again, we simply cannot play perfect football for the entirety of the game to win. Richmond don't need to.
I dunno if thats coaching, or personal or just the current AFL landscape but we cannot beat Richmond while they play that system and we play one that requires perfection.
The Richmond system is a clone of the John Kennedy coached Hawthorn sides of the seventies, that forward at any cost by any means worked back then for them and I used it coaching lower grades where there was a lack of talent and Skills of the game to great affect.

Dangerfield is overrated as a forward imo. It robs us for too much in the middle for not enough return on investment. If you look up his stats, the years where he has played a high percentage of games in the F50 have actually been worse from a goalkicking perspective than the years when he has spent the majority of games in the middle. When he kicked 45 in 2017 nearly all of those were as a mid.

Think we wasted him up forward tonight.
Dangerfield lacks composure. I'd rather he gets the ball and gives it to someone likDuncan or Guthrie who will use it well. He was like a bull in a china shop again tonight. Give me a Duncan ir Guthrie any day over Da
1992 GF all over again. On top first half, didn't make it count, run over in the second half.

The bottom 6 decide GFs. Ours were ordinary. Too many plodders, not enough pace in this team.
Agree, lack of pace was the elephant in the closet. It's why Scott only trusts us playing a controlled slower tempo game. Being overrun is more to do with not having a gear to match Richmond. It looked like Geelong came out hoping to defend their 15 point lead when the aim should have been to score the first couple of goals to increase the pressure. What makes them go into their shell like that? Part mental and part lack of fitness. I wouldn't blame the younger players, admittedly Kolo killed us with his turnovers, but Dangerfield, Blicavs and Rohan had Barry Crockers. Blicavs' brain was operating in slow motion, Dangerfield and Rohan were tearing around like they were on speed but half the time left the ball behind. Everyone was talking up Dangerfield but it ended up being a fizzer.

As I said in the preview thread, both supporters have been given full value by their teams. You would be proud if your boys efforts. Congratulations to Ablett and Taylor for their amazing careers And their contributions to your club and the general footy public. Gaz has obviously been the greatest player of last 14 years. Was so brave playing on after damaging his shoulder. Well done to Duncan and Stewart who were outstanding in first half. Good luck for next season. A replay would be something to look forward fo

Yup exactly.
We need to play collectively brilliantly and have several players have great games to win.
They simply don't.
They can actually play poorly for the majority of the game and never be out of it, and usually find a way to win.
That and composure, they ooze composure.

Our system breaks down only take one player to spud it up.
Missed kick or handpass.

Port last week were good in defence but turned it over bombing it out of the D5 got no flow.

Like us in the second half.

Explain to me how Richmond's brilliance caused Hawkins and Miers to play on and miss eminently gettable shots when we had them absolutely on the ropes?

It's comfortable but lazy to write this off as "Richmond are just so super duper great".

And 2008 Geelong or Hawthorn would beat this Richmond team by 15 goals
PRESSURE.
PERCEIVED PRESSURE.
Deja-vu. Same against Port. Agree about those decisions- they were costly, and not a coaching issue.
As CS and Selwood said all week, for us to win this GF, we would have to execute nearly perfectly. Exactly why I could not select us because we can not do this under their pressure- and no team can.
We were good enough to keep rallying against Lions, but Tigers don't let up.
They are never on the ropes with Martin kicking clutch goals at will from anywhere, anytime. ANY other player, and you'd rightly say he kicked them out of his arse. Not Martin.

Simply can't lose picks or young talent for Cameron now, I know it's seemingly inevitable but please.

Completely understand the desire to keep the window open, but we can't lose the assets we got from TK and eventually the GCS. That's our future to add to the likes of Parfitt, Clark, Henry and hopefully SDK, Stephens etc

This.

Must play hardball and hang on to our picks. They are gold for us.

Push hard and find a way for them to take the compo.

Can anyone explain why there were no press conferences after the game, would have really liked to hear what Scott had to say about the fade out.
Maybe just not the done thing - especially this being a night match

The winning coach probably doesn't want to interrupt celebrations to talk to the media, while the losing coach may well be commiserating or focusing on his players

Hate to say it, but we're just going to be one of those sides, and there's plenty of them, who are near enough but not quite good enough.

It is what it is, personally I'd be going the youth route and loading up via the draft, but I can't exactly begrudge the club for loading up and going again after a GF berth and one of the premier forwards of the comp nominating us as his desired destination.

Hope for next year is still there, hopefully (Covid permitting) things are a little more 'normal' and we can go again. Get Cameron and I reckon we're comfortably the second best side in the comp, unfortunately it's all to no avail if we can't beat the mob from Punt Rd.

Thanks for the year all

Yeah ... I've been a quiet advocate of the bolded for a few years now, but your balanced view is the one I also take; I can understand the club's general bullishness in thinking we can get over the final hurdle with essentially the same team next year ...

But I can't help but consider that it might be worth at least attempting to replicate the approach the club took in building the type of team that we (largely) drafted and developed under Thompson.

Not sure Cameron will be the answer, but we did look a tall short up forward tonight.

Im out gents try not to kill each other, just remember the pain hurts now but it will go away once you take the emotion out of it. Thanks to all for a ripping season and thanks to the mods for all the hard work. Lets look forward to bringing in some new talent in the coming weeks.

Another reason they should shelve the idea of a night grand final for all eternity.

Also, Clark has to play next year and be a lock round 1.

Rejig the game plan and move it quicker to be more attacking

He probably will be playing in Round 1. Whether it's with us or not is another thing though.

Not angry at the club or the team. Richmond have worked out a hack for the game, and they're beating everybody by playing their system.

Also, this team has done exceptionally well to get to where they are. A steeple chaser, a reject, blokes who never played VFL etc. But you don't win games with Dangerfields and Guthries and Menegolas. You win them by building teams from the ground up and forging their will through going through hard times.

This model we're using is not going to deliver premierships. Runners up is a pretty good achievement.

Please hear me out. not trying to be a smart ass here.

In a game of footy, everyone misses something, cant blame your players for that.
its the overall game that you have to focus on.

You guys were red hot and made us look bad in the majority of the fist half. I had a feeling that you wouldn't be able to sustain it for four qtrs.
Why? I just did. call it belief? Being only 15 points down I thought we were a chance and I guess so did our team.
Great teams have that belief, its not just about kicking the ball around and playing keepings off.
Its speed, skill, belief, system , champions and role players, and you need a good mix of them
its everything rolled into one.

But if I had to put it into one reason (because everyone loves one reason explanations right?) it was our speed that beat you in the end, our small running players are hard to stop when they get going.

Yes Dusty did help too but it was a team effort.
You'll be right up there next year, good luck.

Thats the difference, we make an error and it’s costly, it really hurts us. Richmond make a mistake, and usually leads to nothing, and they make plenty of skill errors and mistakes but with the way they play they don’t care, it doesn’t effect their style.

Yep, but why does Hawkins drop an easy mark, straight in front of goal? That didn’t have to be ‘perfect’-an experienced, talented footballer just had to hold the easy mark.

Hopefully we don't see further injury issues next year - be good to see him get a clear run of things over the preseason & into next year

He probably will be playing in Round 1. Whether it's with us or not is another thing though.

Personally I am hoping we hang on to Ratugolea, Narkle and Fogarty - would not be surprised to see any or all of them seek greener pastures though. I'd like to see all 3 in our regular best 22.

Clark looked downright frail this year; not as bullish on him as I was in 2019 ..

Was that the one where Grimes (I think it was) had his back to the ball for the entire time? Surely there had to be a free there somewhere. That's not excusing the fact he should've held onto the mark.
