That article from the Inside Trading desk from the AFL website told us nothing. Just regurgitated what Mackie had said about 10 days ago and chucked West Coast and Carlton in for some chatter without offering any information or possible solutions. Nothing article flung out on Sunday because it had to be done.
I know the feeling as I did 90% of my uni assignments the same way.

I hate the thought of trading down for a couple of middling picks in the teams. Unless it is a reasonable deal just take our pick to the draft

It looks like next year will be a good draft but it would want to be a very good deal for me to trade our pick. A couple of spots for the addition of a pick next year ...then we can talk... but I agree.. P7 in hand is one good kid which we have rarely had access to. We need to be selective on trading totally into next year... even one of the North end of Fr1s ..and a WC Fr2 for example would be in two picks in the 20's.

One needs to have a high knowledge of who you are going to get for the picks. If we can land two Holmes type then we make out like bandits but two Langs etc.. and we waste the pick. Someone like Wilson just looks like such an easy pick. Get him by moving a couple of picks and add a future then id be happy.

Carlton will offer p16 and a future 1st. Not enough as i expect they finish top next year.
Wce they have nothing of enough value unless they offer a future 1st which i cant see them doing. Theres no deal there unless they trade p1 for a bounty of picks and offer us some of those for 7.
Melb 13 and 25 and 33 or 13 and fr1 (prefer the latter)
Dogs 10 and 17 (if they dont get 4, but we would need to send a later pick back)
Adel 9 and 21 or 9 and fr1 (we would have to send later 2024 picks back so they have points for welsh)
Nm: 14 and 2024 p19 (we might want more)

These are all more realistic deals for 7 and much better for us than carl/wce.

Have said all along I think 9 and 21/24 is most likely. There's always a draft 'bolter', and I think O'Sullivan could fall to our pick - and the Crows will pick up the phone as a result.

Reckon we'd be happy with Wilson if we knew the team in between us wouldn't pick him. Pretty confident though that we won't trade the pick before draft night, as there's a chance someone we want could slide.

Also think there's a fair chance we could use our F1 or F2 to get into this draft, if someone we want is still on the board at GWS' pick, for example.

Be interesting to see how it all plays out. The next 10 days is going to very boring for Geelong supporters, me thinks.

I have mentioned this kid a bit when we talked about drafting a ruck late.... Taylor Goad... for 205cm kid..his has speed. Id like to see how he went in te 2k ...

South Australian ruck steals the show

South Adelaide's Taylor Goad has been building this season, and his size-defying speed has been an eye-catching trait on the field. Two sub-three second 20m sprints confirmed his freakish acceleration at 205cm. Goad's 2.97 seconds placed him in the top 10 for the draft combine amongst a bevy of smalls.

Goad has been a presence for the premiership-winning Panthers all season, and his three big contested marks in the Grand Final against Sturt showcased his improved all-round game. He looms as an exciting tall to develop at the next level.

I believe he is under developed too as he is an ex baskeballer type. As I have said a couple of times... whether we like Pike or this kid Goad... I think its better to be slightly heavy in talls and develop them. The advantage of a local kid is they may be happy to spend that 3 to 4 years in development when still at home.

Problem with that approach is that we have 5 list spots to fill. We could promote Dempsey and possible Mullin from rookie list which would mean we only needed to fill 3 spots but all 3 picks would be at 80 odd and we have to keep those players on the list for 2 years. If we trade for multiple picks needs to be 2 second rounders in this year's draft. I would rather keep pick 7 and increase our chances of getting a decent player. Take our chnace's on the late picks.

There's not going to be 80 picks in the draft, so we don't need to worry about selections being that late

But considering the success we've had with later picks and then rookie selections, it's not going to be the worse thing if we have a few picks beyond 40

Road trips are the best times for random thoughts - reading the above tweet about Brisbane lodging paperwork for Doedee and Adelaide now being in a position to match & force a trade had me thinking about free agency and especially RFA

As per the current rules, when the new team lodges paperwork for an RFA, the current team has 3 days to match the offer - the player can then either sign with their current team (not going to happen), a trade is forced between the 2 teams or the player enters the draft

Should the rules around UFA be tweaked somewhat, and that before the current team has their 3 days to match, the AFL (or AFL House /whoever) does a review of the most recent offer from the current team, compared with the offer made by the new team

IF the most recent offer from the current team is lower than that made by the new team, they lose the right to match - the premise being, you didn't value the player at that level when making your offer, so why now should you view them at that value just as a means of making things difficult...

This would stop teams being able to force a trade if they don't like the potential compensation on offer, while also placing an expectation on them to be fair with their own offer to the player & not undervalue them to see what happens

You need a maths degree with all the picks and points.

There will be clubs that need points next year. Already we have seen Carlton have the twins next year. GC will need points too... They probably trade 4 ..into 10 and 17..then trade 10 and 17 ...into more picks for points this year. The performance of Will Graham at the combine is probably the worst outcome for them... They basically have 4 players that could realistically go top20 now. Dies that mean it eats into next years picks for them .. or do they let Graham go ?

But 17 if it lands at GC is probably gettable if you have two pick that add up more than 17 in points. By the time its used 17 is probably 20 or 21... two picks in the 30's might get 17. Maybe we squeeze Port for one of those picks .. and trade a future for another ... and it gets into 17 calculations

Carlton confirmed their interest in our pick 7 on trade radio just then if that means anything

Good luck Carlton. Gonna need to offer something decent to make that happen. Only possibility I could see is them getting a late 20's pick for Fisher, and then passing us that along with 16 and a Future 1st for 7 and a Future 3rd.

I'm no expert, but wouldn't the vast majority of these trades be for higher money?

ie; if a player wants to 'explore his options', he''ll be doing so on the basis that there's no golden ticket
