Yeah I think it's a bit of a stretch for some to suggest that it's rumoured.

Common knowledge I'd say. But that could be said for a solid number of players on AFL lists. What annoys me is that they know the rules but whenever one of them gets caught, it conveniently becomes a cry for help or a problem linked to their mental health. Spare me - if you want the money and the recognition that comes from being an AFL player then you also need to be prepared to make the sacrifices.

If you stuff up then you need to own it.

And before people scream about the special rules that only apply to AFL players, well that's garbage. Plenty of industries now that require regular drug testing of employees.
I agree for the most part, but if we're to believe the reports then this might be one of the few times it's true.

Wasn't doing well mentally anyway, split from his long term GF, and spiralled from there.

Wouldn't be the first to do it, so I do feel for him in that respect. This does actually seem like a mental health battle.

It's not the classic "I was partying and got caught off my face and conveniently now I'm depressed" spin we see so often as you mention. This one might actually be legit.

I don't think the sacrifices are fair. We're talking about boys thrown into the spotlight and all the buildup of stress needs to come out somewhere. We simply don't have the support networks around most clubs to help these boys with all of this. They can't lean on food & alcohol (the top 2 coping mechanisms for men) as these impact their ability to perform.

So they're left to take risks, and if busted, its accurate that the coping mechanism was related to mental health. It feels a cop out, but these kids are still kids. (video game addiction as a coping mechanism is another we're seeing more in more in young athletes)

I thought DeGoey was a great example of this. A young man being forced to realize his behavior is actually more than him being a "lad" and something that required help & assistance to manage in ADHD. (If we're getting really deep the rumours of Claytons hygiene & professionalism are flags for similar).

Anyways, I get the "own it" if you stuff up narrative, but its far more powerful for them to be role models and talk about how their mental health struggles led to the wrong decisions/wrong choices- that helps the next generation more than it upsets us old "harden up" folks.

He wouldnt want to go to north though.
We aren't a serious option for Oliver.

As I understand Oliver it had some involvement with the Blues in bygone years.

If I was spitballing, the Dees badly need a forward. McKay would more than fill the bill. Both Oliver and McKay have long-term contracts. Some negotiating regarding those contracts and the Blues adding something might play out.

The Blues then have to sort out a goofball.

By the way, the Blues are very active. According to Shifter Sheehan, already signed two Irish players.

Smith should be our number 1 target this off season. We may be 12 months early but if he’s open to leaving and it can be done at a reasonable price then we should be chips in.

Adding Smith, C.Guthrie and Clark to our midfield for next year would give it a giant boost.

Why is everyone still talking about Bailey Smith?
Didn’t he say he was staying with the dogs in 2024 not long ago?

He's a C grader
Absolutely. But if he can stay on the paddock, he will be an upgrade on our now non-existent KPD depth. And, as has already been mentioned, would be a huge benefit for our VFL side, at worst.

If the cost is negligible and he can back up week on week, it would make plenty of sense for us.

Generous.

When teams are throwing $700k a year at Esava you known the supply of KPDs in the league is ridiculously low.

We need a mature body in the VFL in case we have injuries to two of SDK/Henry/Kolo.

O'Brien as a delisted free agent in that situation would be fine.
If he actually played a game it wouldn't be a good result

what about a three way trade
Melb - Get Lobb pick 7 and pick 10
Dogs - Oliver
Cats - Smith

add a few swaps of Future seconds and thirds and everyone walks away happy
That was my immediate thought too.

If the Dogs got Oliver they'd probably let Smith go.

Plus, with the Croft bid they need to get rid of the picks anyway. Might as well get a superstar in for your troubles.

Geelong -
Give: 7, Future second
Get: Bailey Smith

Bulldogs -
Give - 7, 10, 17
Get - Clayton Oliver, 25, future second

Melbourne -
Give - Clayton Oliver, 25
Get - 7, 10, 17

Honestly reckon everyone walks away happy there.

We get our young gun mid, Dogs get their premiership midfield and replace Dunkley, while the Dees get fodder for a key forward or the ability to move up for Reid.

I get that but he wont see it that way. They are still 3-4 yeard off contending and he wont agree to go there.
I'm glad you know his perspective.
I'd be stunned if he leaves Demons. He is part of their Holy Trinity- Max, Clayton and Christian

Pick 1 is not getting traded.

You have been strong with that opinion. Fair enough.

I can see a deal with North being doable. They have so many picks they need to trade ..and Reid is just one kid.... one knee away from tears for fears. They could demand their comp picks from 2024 plus 2 and something else ... Be huge to knock that back imo.

I cant see WC trading the pick with a certain Curtin. Twomey say he not be surprised to see him float within the top 5 but id say North are jsutas likely to let it be known he will not get past 3 if WC trade 1 to anyone but them.

Surely the Blues salary cap must be tight, even if they let a Harry McKay go

The cookster said a while ago they would be quiet. Been linked to Holands at GC for a future pick.

This is your life mantra, not ours
NOT MY LIFE MANTRA, as if you would know, but, Better than being deluded.
-at least we all knew Danger and JC nominated us.
-there is so much idle jumping at shadows here with our long off season, I am not sure how seriously some are looking at these rumours.

The narrative hasn't changed.

Contracted, would rather be elsewhere, & the Dogs need a good offer to move him.

We're desperate to win another flag, and need a midfielder like him to do it. Fits the age profile for our future too.

7 and the Sav pick hopefully gets it done, but we'll wait and see.
