Road trips are the best times for random thoughts - reading the above tweet about Brisbane lodging paperwork for Doedee and Adelaide now being in a position to match & force a trade had me thinking about free agency and especially UFA
As per the current rules, when the new team lodges paperwork for an UFA, the current team has 3 days to match the offer - the player can then either sign with their current team (not going to happen), a trade is forced between the 2 teams or the player enters the draft
Should the rules around UFA be tweaked somewhat, and that before the current team has their 3 days to match, the AFL (or AFL House /whoever) does a review of the most recent offer from the current team, compared with the offer made by the new team
IF the most recent offer from the current team is lower than that made by the new team, they lose the right to match - the premise being, you didn't value the player at that level when making your offer, so why now should you view them at that value just as a means of making things difficult...
This would stop teams being able to force a trade if they don't like the potential compensation on offer, while also placing an expectation on them to be fair with their own offer to the player & not undervalue them to see what happens

You mean RFA. No matching for UFA
Id change a fair bit on matching FA. Your suggestion seems a very afl type rule . quirky enough to be something they would do. To me the whole concept of RFA and UFA is restriction of trade ... you treat 25% of your list different to the other 75% based on how much they earn... in a certain year. Back ended deals mess up the concept about who is RFA and UFA.
The only thing I don’t like is him having the ability to enter the draft.Road trips are the best times for random thoughts - reading the above tweet about Brisbane lodging paperwork for Doedee and Adelaide now being in a position to match & force a trade had me thinking about free agency and especially RFA

But what if they can't agree to a trade, he has to go somewhere? The only thing I don’t like is him having the ability to enter the draft.
It should be he goes to Brisbane, stays at Adel or trade if it’s matched
I think that’s bad luck, to many avenuesBut what if they can't agree to a trade, he has to go somewhere?
Matching is 100% about the pick they'll receive. North outright said that this year re. McKay. If we get 3 we won't match, but if we don't we'll do it.Yeah, that one - I've corrected it now
It does feel at times that matching on an RFA is more about getting a better draft pick/s than on offer via compensation compared with how the team does value the player as part of their team - about the commodity they can bring in for them
I remember when Scooter joined us as a RFA that WCE very quickly didn't match the offer, but after they were notified of the compensation pick, there was a bit more noise around being unhappy with it and they would have matched if they'd known it would be a pick either in or end of first round
So that wasn't about matching due to wanting to keep the player, but purely about wanting a better pick which I'm not sure would have been coming anyway
Yeah but where does he end up in that scenario?I think that’s bad luck, to many avenues
What could they possibly offer?
Eagles would be giving up F1 which they wouldn't do and Carlton is going into their premiership contending window....
What are they giving up? 3 Firsts? Its not happening.
9 + 19 would probably get it done it for 7.I was correct in assuming Adelaide would get end of R1 compo for Dodee (seems overs though).
Boy do I hate this compo thing.
Anyway Adelaide is stocked with 3x picks in the low/mid 20's + #9.
I won't be surprised if they get busy trying to move up.
We could be an option with our 7 going to them for 9 + a 20's pick.
If 9 was low enough to get Darcy Wilson I'd be keenish (assuming only Caddy is left for us from the top tier kids).
In saying that, they could make a play for that earlier and better GC pick and potentially trump the Dogs for it.
GC will be absolutely blessed this draft with all their academy guns + teams probably paying big for their #4.
Damn
What was Brisbane's contract...
It's certainly not out of the range of possibilities.9 + 19 would probably get it done it for 7.
It sounds expensive, but clubs pay a premium for these picks. It happens every year.
Ratugolea's ceiling from this point is beyond either too. It's going to be upsetting when we get pick 35 for him.Crows getting end of R1 compo for Dodee makes North getting #3 for McKay the surest of sure things.
#bogus
I'm happy to play hardball with Sav.Ratugolea's ceiling from this point is beyond either too. It's going to be upsetting when we get pick 35 for him.
Because of the supply/demand and therefore value of KPDs (especially omeswith potentially elite intercepting) I'm inclined to agree on this one. He could be one of their Mitchell/Hill plug and plays that helps finally win Kenny a flag.I'm happy to play hardball with Sav.
Either we get something of value we rate or no deal hopefully.
Swings and roundabouts for the benefit we get for Rat. They will not offer more if they do not have a selection. We will need a backline player that can play on the monsters. Stewart and Kolo cannot be expected to do so.Ratugolea's ceiling from this point is beyond either too. It's going to be upsetting when we get pick 35 for him.
