There’s no benefit to us in having him walk to the ND for free.
Except that we've continually been regenerating our list over the past decade, and that hitting the trade table isn't the only means of doing just that.
Besides, not bringing in 3 or 4 players via trade isn't a sign of sitting on our hands. There's been noise all year around players of interest, approaches that have been made it - if a player decides to stay at their current club or prefers a team other than Geelong, so be it but that doesn't mean we're sitting on our hands
Then there's consideration of the players freely available - just because someone is looking for a new home doesn't mean they're the best fit for the club, so bringing them in as a means of being seen to do something isn't necessarily the smartest option
And while we may lack the top end draft picks that North has, we will still have sufficient picks to cover the open spots on the list - and as we've seen over the years, those later picks tend to go pretty well for us
The club might see that differently.
If they dont rate the mid range of this draft (and i suspect they dont) then giving up a pick (25) that they think will bust and letting him go to the draft is at worst a nil all draw. They also might think that by holding out port will get desperate and offer more.
The other point is they may well think that if he has to go through the draft he will back out and sign (and then go wherever as FA next year). Remember hawks probably want to play him fwd which will ruin him and NM are so bad if he goes there he might end up the way of polec in 2 years (i think sav is good but hes the kind of player that needs a good side around him). He obviously doesnt prefer to stay but he might decide to do it if thats the alternative.
I doubt the club is averse to keeping him for 12 months (we will be light on for depth if he goes now) and then he goes for band 1 or 2 compo in a better draft next year (when we will have more need for picks than we do this year).
Ultimately a deal probably gets done but i also wont be surprised if port doesnt up the offer that mackie is prepared to let him go to the draft. Unfortunately not all draft pools are equal and this one isnt.

With only picks 8 and 81 we should and I believe will take anything we can get for Sav.

And look at the absolute s**t show of mismanagement and near merger they have gone tru to get it.
Id take 4 Flags in 12 years after the 44 year drought and as it appears to be, gearing up for another tilt in 24 than having been basically irrelevant for 2 decades and abhorrently poor in the last 5 years just so I can have 5 x Rd1 picks in 2023 draft.
Ill take CS's 71% winning record since 2011 over the 5 Rd picks.
And its not like we are in pick wilderness. OH, Bowes, Pick7(Clark) , and Bruhn all arrived last year. Plus in getting all of that, we still kept our RD 1 this year.
Id say, while yes its nice to have threads saying "Welcome to Geelong player X" id much rather them be quality based and not so quanity based or there for the * of it... and with 1 or 2 exceptions this year our needs wouldn't be met by any of them.
GO Catters
I suspect there is a pretty wide gap between our $$ offer and Port’s. If that’s the case, I can’t imagine he’d be very happy if he was stuck at GFC in 2024.

There’s no way he stays. People say this, but how many instances of this actually happening are there?
Geelong walk to their own beat. They only want a fair deal on how they see his value which is much more than most posters. The coach has always said that he wanted so he may fight to keep him or get what he is worth. The club might see that differently.

Sav has already lost money by not being traded last year (and playing for Geelong this year). The club might see that differently.

If his request is refused a second time, there is no way he stays at Geelong next year.
Where he will be traded or he will walk.
To counter the Hawks in the PSD, Port will avoid the pre-season and will try to select him in the main draft.
Where the danger to Port is North's plethora of teens picks; albeit North are still trying to trade up to Pick One.
With their annual handouts to North, the AFL is creating a super team that already has more players selected first round than any other club. And, may still end with this year's Pick One and Reid.
So, if Geelong ignores Port’s offer that most pundits consider fair, it takes the risk of contributing to the next super team.
Both David King and Leigh Montagna seem to have a different view:

I knew Hawthorn were splashing the cash but are Port going that hard too? Key defenders really are at an all-time premium.“On Geelong’s side (they are arguing) ‘you’re offering around six years, $700,000 mark for a player who has got untapped potential in your eyes. Pay up if you want to get him off our hands’.”

And then add another year to an aging list……The other thing that's seems too be often overlooked in terms of personnel changes/additions for next season is those that come from within the club and already on our list:
- Jhye Clark, 1 game this past season
- Toby Conway, 1 game
- Cam Guthrie, 6 games
- Jack Henry, 11 games
Then add in another year of development and pre-season for Dempsey, Knevitt and maybe even a refreshed Parfitt
Suddenly we're looking at a number of players already on our list who didn't play a significant role in 2023, but have the chance to do so in 2024

Plus we lost probably our best outside midfielder of the past 3 years in Isaac Smith. And then add another year to an aging list……
Hang on, what does Port's 41 pick come into on the night after all those Suns picks get compressed? Down to 35 or something?
You'd probably get Haste at that pick... a few pundits have him going anywhere after pick 25, but most likely after 35...
Maybe we can squeeze 25+41 for Esava + 87

Yes Cornesy said it the other day. Hawkins, Touhy, Paddy, Guthrie, Duncan, blics, Cameron, Stewart…..etc all 30+ at the beginning of 2024 AFL year. Doubt all of that lot will be injury free and will likely dip in form….And then add another year to an aging list……
