Players only move for picks now, not direct swaps - especially when a weaker club is selling to a stronger club. After all, who would move from Geelong to Carlton, unless they weren't getting a game here?

At the absolute most, third parties might get involved with a player. But that's it.
Whilst true Carlton aren't trading him to us for a bunch of late firsts so will ask for A grade talent and we won't and shouldn't even bother entertaining that idea.

I would have said the same about Jeremy Cameron changing clubs after we finished runner-up, too.

Obviously, the fact that Carlton do hold a whip hand in terms of a contract does change the game somewhat. It really depends on how much they value desire and team cohesion, I suppose - Melbourne is Exhibit A on what happens when you hold unhappy players for too long, regardless of contract.

Of course, there are a couple of examples where that has worked out for Sydney (Ryan O'Keefe, Tom Papley).

Things I’ll never understand

Re Curnow - Pass. He’d cost way too much…..go back and re read the Cameron thread when GWS matched the free agency bid. Half the board was melting down saying walk away immediately Geelong.

Re Curnow - Pass - We have Mollier, Polkinghorn and Whiltshire at home. I just assume that these ppl started watching footy recently.

When a player easily in the top 20 of the league wants to come to your club you run. When he’s a Key Position Forward you sprint.
if sprinting means paying whatever it takes, which player(s) would you have in mind as part of the trade? ... because we just don't have good picks.

Maybe curnow should take inspiration from former 49er Charles Haley

Very interesting doco for someone who knows little about the American game and that player certainly had his mental health issues.

At times, I could see how our game could almost look semi professional in comparison to theirs ..everything seemed amped up including bad attitude, poor behaviour, private ownership and administration and players caught up in a miasma of self importance and being given credit for success.

One aspect that interested me was when the 2 time super bowl winner was replaced by another coach ..and the new coach leaned more towards trusting players and expecting the players to be professionals etc.. and some ex players disliked that they lost stern voice and the hard hand. .. The new coaches attitude seemed very modern yet was considered less successful ..and to this day some players believed they would have done more with their group with the bombastic dictatorial coach.

No player in our first 22 would move to Carlton, especially not with their ruckman and best forward having left.

So many contacted players this year expecting to move from ordinary clubs .. how do the deals get done? Especially ina year with what is considered a poor draft ..and the afl have made it harder to trade for picks from the academy clubs by changing the points system ..when previously they might trade them as long as they have enough points in total.

Yet one see the media continually push the line as if the contracted player can just be traded…. like how does Geelong get a deal done for CC

I would say ..why would a contracted Shannon Neale agree to the trade… let alone why we would want to trade him just as he is coming into his own

The inability to trade contracts without player permission ..means a reliance on draft picks ..which in itself is an irony as what is a draft pick but an enforced method of player movement.

We will not force adult men in the system on significant money to move yet ..we are happy to dictate to boys to men that they must go to where they are allocated for a base contract…(unless of course they are of the upper class draftee that is a father son or an academy kid or nga )

I have no issue with this. 18 year olds aren't as tied down as men in their 20s and 30s - they usually don't have marriage-like relationships, they don't have kids, their parents are usually in rude health, they don't have a house, they aren't in the prime of their career, etc etc. It's a lot easier to pick up your life and move across the country when you're young.

The amount of players wanting out from their clubs a year or two before the contracts finish is becoming ridiculous. Why did they sign contracts in the first place. The writings pretty much always on the wall well in advance when you're at a club like Essendon or Carlton.
When your promised success and end up with mediocrity that’s how.
Carlton had all the main pieces to start contending.
Then they filled their list with average footballers and a proven average coach

How much of that is them wanting out vs the club pushing them out.

You have factor in "buyers regret" into the equation.

A lot of players have been doing this for years in NBA/NFL. Sign a long term deal and get PAID then orchestrate their way out to where they really want to be.
Very smart on their behalf, bank the pay then ask out.

Reckon that's what Harley Reid is doing as well.
Take the money then in 2 years time ask out once after you got your guaranteed cash in hand.
Same for Nas, put pressure on the club to overpay then leave once you've already cashed the cheque

Think there's a bit of the player wanting out but also Clubs being more open to the player wanting out, especially when that player is 12 months out from free agency

IF Jezza was a true free agent (not restricted), it would have seen GWS receive pick 9 as compensation when he joined us rather than the forced trade situation that arose and the trading of multiple picks plus Jezza - and as we know, 99% of the time clubs won't match a FA offer meaning they'll accept the compo pick

But there's times where clubs know 12+ months out that a player is leaning towards a move versus staying, so they'll be more open to trading a player out when they believe they can get more for a trade during that "Pre-FA" period compared with what they'd receive when the player actually hits free agency

As a free agent, the club receives a single compensation pick for the player but as a pre-FA, the original club may be able to push for a higher pick than they'd receive via compensation or maybe have a bit more thrown in

I don't think it's always as simply as being the player looking for an out while under contract

I have zero problem with them wanting out, provided that they are prepared to be professionals and try their guts out if the club holds them to their contract.

Sure thing. And when Carlton demand Holmes, Dempsey and a first round pick in return, what then?

Do you just shrug, hand them all over and put your new 29yo injury-prone "top 20" KPF under your arm and head home (probably via the surgeon's office)?

If Charlie is interested in coming to Geelong, we should ABSOLUTELY engage in that conversation and do everything we reasonably can to get him down to KP. But there is a limit to how much we can and should pay.

if you think it's a good idea to blow up the core of our team for a 29yo key forward with dodgy knees who managed just 32 goals from 18 games this season, when we are already the second highest scoring team in the comp this year, then I'm gonna assume it's YOU who started watching footy recently.
Or its Charlie's agent 😁

Not that I think there's much chance at all for CC... but Ollie Henry would be a name I'd bring up as part of a deal if exploring a trade.
That would the definition of selling low.

Plus it would erode the relationship with one of our most important players (Jack H).

We should be looking to build o Henry up, not giving him away for next to nothing

In view of OHenry’s drop off in form this season, my guess is that there is an injury and/or off field issue that the club will be expecting to resolve next year. He is a handy player to have up our sleeve should we get forward injuries in the finals

Enright is driving talks with Flanders, Merritt and Butters.

They want to flick Marshall our way and use some of they get for Ryan. Leek aleer price has dropped.
Marshall and Ryan in a 3 way trade has always made the most sense to me. Why put Marshall forward where he's kicked all of 15 goals in a year ever? You could be using him to get an actual forward line player to play there.

I just assumed he was carrying some niggle, and/or he's the sort of player who needs to be close to 100% fit to feel confident and in a good headspace.

Excellent 2023, started off 2024 pretty well (was something like 25 goals after 10 games which is fine), then missed a stretch and was on/off as sub a few times, and just never got back into the swing of it apart from the Prelim.

The just never really got going in 2025.

As if he copped a knock or nagging injury that he couldn't shake in mid 2024, and it just wrecked his momentum and confidence.

Correct. Which is why curnow wont Get traded anywhere because Carlton will set the price too high.

I think Ryan would be a bit of waste but thats just me.
