Seen a couple tenuous (at best) links, but hey, it beats talking about Worpel/Oliver for the millionth time.

Hypothetically, what would everyone here pay for Zach Merrett if he wanted to come to Geelong next month?

1 year left on his contract.

A future second according to Twomey or Beveridge.
So, with Marshall having 2 years left on his contract you'd be happy with a 2nd this year and a future 2nd?

More than I'd be willing to offer for Marshall

I know our first this year wouldn't be enough, but that would be the first part of the deal on the table and go from there

So in reality Ryan resume is better then Marshall, and is younger also, and Contracted. And you want more than our 1st round pick for Marshall.
And you want Ryan for 2nd round pick

Marshall is a better player than Ryan.

Look, I’m not going to argue about this - I’ve already posted enough on your Board.

You guys want Marshall. Which means you rate him.
He is contracted for another 2 years and has already been paid a large part of those 2 years. So would have a very desirable deal. A deal that also suits us and he is a desired player.

Even Geelong fanatic Cleary is saying it’s going to take more than you have. Let’s see what happens. We already said no to Marshall next year when he asked to leave.

That's why the NRL doesn't have a draft I'm pretty sure.

A player challenged that they had to go to where the draft told him he had to go and he won the case.

Something along those lines anyway
Yeah spot on. Case is: Adamson v Australian Rugby League.

There hasn't been any real test of the AFL's draft or restricted free agency rules.

I think it's pretty shaky ground though.

Honestly seems to me like Saints fans are pushing for this more than we are.

A lot of Saints posters' trade scenarios seem to be based on the assumption that Marshall is going and another first rounder is coming their way. Whereas most Cats fans are "It's great if he comes to us but we're not frantically chasing him".

Saints have every right to dig in and demand maximum value for a contracted player, but I guess we'd just walk away if it came to that.

We rate him as better / insurance for a guy who is about to turn 35, and our up and comer who might yet have a leg amputated.

So we're not setting our ratings bar real high.

St kilda want a 1st and then something they can trade for Ryan

The salary situation means we need you to improve your first round pick.

You are also the ones chasing the contracted player and getting him to commit to you ultimately.
I mean, yes, but also you are the ones sitting on an AFL-grade ruckman, chewing plenty of salary, to effectively sit in the VFL.

Would be funny to see negotations between Corey Enright and Andrew Mackie though.

As per Cleary this morning. Marshall’s deal has been front loaded. There isn’t a lot left to play. So it’s an extremely valuable cap deal now.

So in reality Ryan resume is better then Marshall,

Not sure what reality that is, as I would be pretty sure mist neutral supporters would rank Marshall as the more avlauable player.

Marshall is contracted for 2 more years.

And you want more than our 1st round pick for Marshall.

Well the Cats could go out in straight sets to improve the offer, but I doubt it? So I would expect some form of sweetener.

And you want Ryan for 2nd round pick

Marshall's salary for 2026 and 2027 has had a large chunk of it paid already as it was heavily front end loaded (as it has been with a number of other St Kila players).

So for St Kilda Marshall will be cheaper for 2026 and 2027 than Ryan will be. And cheaper than many players on our list will be for 2026/27.

This effects the trade price that St Kilda would be Ok to release him at.

I’m confused, why would you be needing a large price for your VFL 30yo ruckman?? How could this in any scenario be more valuable than a first round draft pick? If you get a first round pick, take it and run.

Eh, it's basically going to be a game of who blinks first. But deep down, I think there's almost zero chance that Marshall stays at StKilda next year. Playing him either in the VFL, or even worse, as a key forward, would be pretty silly, when he's probably in his last year of being worth something seriously good at the trade table.

Whether it's to us, or to some third party club, is the question.

Rowan Marshall is a better player than Liam Ryan, but not necessarily more valuable.

Ruckmen are like wicketkeepers - that becomes the problem here. Teams don't have a use for two of them.

Getting close to a tantrum because your logic is being called out for what it rightfully is

Like I said it’ll end in tears as usual

Give them our current 1st and a future 3rd or something. The rest can be a problem for them and wce to sort out.

Wrong. St kilda want a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick. 2nd round pick for Ryan and you intend on completely trading out of this draft as much as possible. GWS have a slight squeeze and can't hold aleer. Talk is a 3rd round pick gets it done
