giving non-Victorian teams a fair go

The likely move of the four SA and WA teams into the AFL probably in 2025 provides the AFL with an opportunity to reduce some of the inequities in the competition that currently exist.

The reserves teams together will hopefully be able to have full access to anyone in their state - as well as players from other states as well - the only restriction being a possible salary cap for those non AFL players on the list.

For the SA and WA teams this plan would see their respective states broken up between the two clubs with 4 of the city and country zones in each state given over to each of the AFL teams. Each of the AFL clubs would be expected to develop talent within their zones in partnership with SANFL and WAFL sides. In return each of the AFL sides would have first call on local players from their respective areas, in the first and second rounds of the national draft unless players from those zones specifically nominated to go into the open draft instead. The players, similar to those in the northern academies, would have a bidding system employed if other clubs were prepared to make a bid on those players in these rounds.

The Victorian clubs could also have their state divided up into city and country zones (10 teams for 6.6m people - meaning 660,000 for each club). They could also be given the opportunity to pick up a player from their zone from the first round of the national draft - under the same conditions as the SA and WA clubs to provide some form of compensation and compromise with these VFL teams.

One of the objectives of allocating specific areas to clubs around Australia, would be more the money, time and effort spent by the clubs developing talent in their respective states. The clubs would actually gain some benefit from developing talent within their zones and plan accordingly

NSW and QLD would continue to have their academies to ensure that the game grows in their respective states, but eventually it would be hoped that the north Queensland, Northern Territory and maybe even northern WA areas could be assimilated into a team playing out of Cairns, Darwin and Alice Springs , making a 20 team national competition, with the impending entry of Tasmania.

It would be easy to criticize such an initiative, and it can tweaked in manner of ways, but something needs to be done to redress the serious imbalance which now exists for teams like the crows, Eagles, Power and Freo compared with the Victorian teams and some aspects of the other interstate rivals with their own academies. There has been few interstate premiers since 2005 and particularly when non Victorian teams are pitted against their Victorian rivals. Something needs to be done to even up the competition for SA and WA teams in particular.

I agree something needs to be done but:
1. I don’t think fairness is a high priority for the AFL. It comes well below money-making and boosting the game in nsw and qld
2. As far as money-making goes, the AFL probably thinks sa and wa are doing pretty well. Our clubs are generally financially ok, even when we’re playing badly. Footy rates well on telly in SA and WA. Footy is not being displaced as the dominant sport in sa or wa any time soon. They don’t see a financial need to give us a fair go. Incidentally, this is a big part of why tassie didn’t get a team. They had good tv ratings already so why bother?
3. There is no powerful voice crying out for a fairer go for SA and WA. Our club’s leaders are mostly very wary of complaining. Our club is in fact controlled by the afl. The swans goal post fiasco is the exemption that proves the rule, but so far we haven’t seen any results even from that. Compare and contrast eg Eddie at Collingwood. The AFL exec is dominated by a close network of Melbourne people. They still talk about ‘interstate clubs’. The AFL commission is weak, full of business types and anyway is dominated by the exec.
4. Your idea would only get traction if the Melbourne footy establishment bought in, and why would they when they are already running the show and doing just fine?

Why do you hate paragraphs?

Surprised that not more people would be interested in this given the inequality in present system
Im interested in it. Have many comments but no time to post atm.

I also am surprised, heaps of supporters like the point the finger at club for what they see as below par performance on things and why we haven't won premierships, but then are tumbleweeds and crickets on obvious issues out of the AFL which are as large if not larger part as to why we dont/can't win them.

I don't think all the SANFL "get the AFL teams out" brigade realise the damage this is going to do to the SANFL, at the moment Port and Crows are restricted on who we can grab as top ups, that will all go, the good players will be snapped up by the AFL sides, and that isn't taking into account the money that the AFL sides put into the competition. The SANFL will become a 3rd rate comp barely above the Amms.

Its only my ideas and thoughts Coopers.
That bit where you said "The likely move of the four SA and WA teams into the AFL probably in 2025" is that a thing that's happening though? I haven't read about that.

It's a big deal if there is a proper ressies competition. Possibly even for the VFL clubs whose ressies also would have top ups and stuff too right?

That’s the likely timeline according to a number of people in the know.

Will weaken SANFL as players vying for this reserves team will be SANFL players you would think as well as players from other states

The idea of an AFL reserves competition is a good one. BUT, will the Victorian powerbrokers really want it?
What happens to the VFL? That will be the primary concern. They won't care at all about equality for non-Victorian teams.

What Port have done and will probably do, is once again weaken the South Australian case. They will end up joining nothing more than an extended VFL, not an actual reserves competition. Again.

They really are that dumb.
