Not much love for Jonathon Brown for Brisbane?

Not much love for Jason Akermanis either.

He is a Brownlow medal winner. 4 time all-australian, he won there 2004 leading goal kicker.

If it wasn't for the stuff he is also remembered for off-field, and the circumstances how he left the club, I think he could very well be Brissys greatest ever.

This is only for the time that I've been watching.

Did you mean junior? If you never saw senior, you could hardly recall Dunstall??

Seems that Matthews, Whitten, Skilton, Carey are the only "universal" goat picks (with a few exceptions including those based on time viewed).

Interesting.

For reference, here are the AFL Legends:

12 initial "Legends" inducted 1996:
Ron Barassi
Haydn Bunton Senior
Roy Cazaly
John Coleman
Jack Dyer
Polly Farmer
Leigh Matthews
John Nicholls
Bob Pratt
Dick Reynolds
Bob Skilton
Ted Whitten

Ian Stewart (1997)
Gordon Coventry (1998)
Peter Hudson (1999)
Kevin Bartlett (2000)
Barrie Robran (2001)
Bill Hutchison (2003)
Jock McHale (2005)
Darrel Baldock (2006)
Norm Smith (2007)
Alex Jesaulenko (2008)
Kevin Murray (2010)

We can excuse the list somewhat, as it seems you need to be old to get included. Matthews was the last to play in 1985, and KB the only other from the 80's (Perhaps Jezza?).

I hate hate hate the "GOAT" acronym. I know it's unfortunately unavoidable, but still.

Might choose some tomorrow but the couple of things I wished to chime on were:

- Cousins the best Eagle. By a stretch, in my mind.

- Ted Whitten the best Bulldog. Doug Hawkins second.

- Lockett a good case for both St.Kilda and Sydney. I'd rank him as St.Kilda's for sure, and even though Goodes and Skilton gave longer great service to South/Sydney, Lockett had the social impact and public interest that helped the club off-field just as much as he did on-field. In fact, yeah, I'd put him for both teams.

I'll agree that Cousins was the best Eagle. We all know the story, but gee he'd be up for some higher honours if things hadn't derailed. Almost two full seasons out of the game, and then two at the Tigers. If he could've played out those four years at the Eagles he'd be spoken of in the same breath as Voss, Buckley, Hird, and Riccuito,

Judd's peak was obviously the highest, but I think he's probably fallen two seasons short in being allowed that title.

Matera was purely magical, but went through patches of inconsistency within and between seasons. He's my #2.

Jakovich was never the same after the knee reconstruction. He played out his career as an above average player, but not a whole lot more.

For those mentioning Kemp; it's worth acknowledging, but then I'd think Guy McKenna would also come into reckoning.

If Cox can play on with 2011 form for a couple for years, he'll be right up there. I think 2012 will be his last AA type year though.

I'd say Lockett would be the closest anyone has ever got to topping the list at both clubs. You could not argue his selection as St Kilda's #1 (though they've had some legends as well). But reckon he would just fall short for Sydney/South Melbourne, purely because he only played 5 full seasons. While his impact was tremendous, he didn't have the longevity of other legendary Swans like Pratt and Skilton.

Is there anyone else in history who would come as close as Plugger?

Perhaps Judd at the end of his career will be considered top of Carlton's, but he probably won't have the longevity at West Coast to match Cousins or Jakovich.

Adelaide: Ricciuto (Mcleod)
Brisbane: Voss (Black)
Carlton: Williams (Judd, Bradley)
Collingwood: Coventry (Buckley)
Essendon: Coleman (Hird)
Fitzroy: Bunton (Roos)
Geelong: Ablett Snr
Gold Coast: Ablett Jnr
Hawthorn: Dunstall
Melbourne: Flower (Barassi)
North Melbourne: Carey
Port Adelaide: Tredrea
Richmond: Dyer
St Kilda: Lockett
Sydney/South: Skilton (Lockett)
West Coast: Cousins (Judd)
Western Bulldogs/Footscray: Whitten

I recall Dunstall and Ablett Snr.

I've reassessed my view based on the fact that jnr only played 9 seasons for the cats, of which 4 were outstanding as opposed to about 10 from snr.

Just for an example, how many of you watched Coventry play, or are you just plucking names from your clacker?
I used to watch the Coventry brothers play every week.

From 1980 onwards:

Adelaide: Mark Ricciuto
Brisbane: Michael Voss / Jason Akermanis
Carlton: Greg Williams
Collingwood: Nathan Buckley/Peter Daicos
Essendon: James Hird / Matthew Lloyd - Had his haters, but at his best he was unstoppable
Geelong: Gary Ablett Snr
Hawthorn: Lance Franklin / Jason Dunstall
Melbourne: Jim Stynes / Robert Flower
North Melbourne: Wayne Carey
Port Adelaide: Warren Tredrea - Was always underrated
Richmond: Matthew Richardson
St Kilda: Tony Lockett/Harvey
Sydney: Paul Kelly / Adam Godes
West Coast: Pater Matera
Western Bulldogs/Footscray: Doug Hawkins / Chris Grant

Simple weight of numbers would sway me on Cousins over Judd for WC. 12 seasons versus 6 seasons. That has to count for something...

This is the argument that swayed my opinion on Ablett Jnr V Snr for Geelongs greatest player.

Very few players have played enough with two teams to be considered. The first one that came to mind would be Bernie Quinlan with Fitzroy and Footscray - obviously a terrific player - although I'm not old enough to know whether he was regarded in the absolute elite during his time.
