Gold Coast and GWS has failed

Fact is the North game at Bellerueve drew 7k. It ain't our responsibility to draw away crowds obviously. We're disappointed our guys are used to playing in front of larger crowds.

7k is a statement.

7k in a place that likes its football says something.

Firstly it says we don't give a toss about either club.

Secondly the AFL itself has the name of MUD here at the moment anyway.

That's fine but if you're going to have a go at our crowds, when we're clearly a work in progress, focussed long term, then you cant poo poo at the big picture.

I think in the long run, the lack of immediate on field success will be better for both clubs. I'm sure even the most diehard Suns and Giants fans would agree it'll mean more if they actually go through some hardship first (no, the first few years of playing kids with absolutely zero expectations does not count as hardship).

It would be interesting to know how many of their Annual Presenation Nights have been held in the GWS area.
Actually, I looked it up.

2017 The Waterview, Sydney Olympic Park
2016 Le Montage, Lilyfield
2015 Ivy Ballroom, Sydney - transferred to Rosehill Gardens, Rosehill
2014 Ivy Ballroom, Sydney
2013 Star Casino, Sydney
2012 The Waterview, Sydney Olympic Park

So that's three in the GWS area, three either in the city or inner-west. And it would have been only two in the GWS area, but for the late transfer of venue in 2015.

And none of the pressos held in the GWS area have been west of Parramatta. Funny that.

I have actually but I'll go back over it

From day one I've supported the strategic approach into the 'great West' of Sinney. It was always going to be a long campaign. The outcome is not certain. The cost is not certain, the value to the professional game is not certain. But as a strategic push it makes sense.

GC on the other hand had no such obvious values at hand. Its whole history of glitz & glitter has a litany of sporting club corpses strewn across its beaches. I doubt it will ever be self sustaining or give much value back to the game.

Maybe I'm wrong, I hope I am. Because it will be a monumentally expensive failure for the AFL if it goes to form on the GC. At the moment we have two 1/2 clubs in SEQ. In NSW its better with one whole club & a 1/2 in the west.

The jury might be out still, but the bills are rising to dizzying heights, even as we speak. ;)

I have a friend who has a couple nephews living in Fairfield and they're quite sold on AFL - and they're not really a family big on sports either
Pretty sure they've got a ground or two in that area that have got posts set up as well
You'd struggle to find kids into AFL in that area when I was in school, let alone posts set up

Aussie Rules is certainly growing in NSW & particularly in metro Sydney.
Paul Kent on NRL 360 a few months ago made a big song and dance about Aussie Rules posts being put up at the ground where the first Rugby League game took place. He called AFL a virus that needed to be stopped.

I agree. The population is here to support a Western Sydney team, provided the determination of the AFL to make it succeed remains.

The problem is that many here on BigFooty can't see the longer term, bigger picture.

I guess its the level of support at the end of the day. NRL clubs don't get a lot. The 'footy' culture is not like in AR states. Yet an area of 2 million plus people should be enough to sustain 'life'. ;)

Gotta keep the yacht charter sponsor happy Sherb, how else are people from the west going to enjoy the off season if not for a leisurely yacht cruise around Sydney Harbour.

You are mistaking support for game attendance.

I dont see the Swans going all over Sydney nor quite a few other clubs.

Should Sydney change their name to Moore Park?

This is about the Giants, not the Swans. I thought you may have cottoned on to that.

Anyhow, the Swans are established here. The Giants are not. The Swans no longer need to Swan all over Sydney in an attempt to establish themselves. The Giants, however, need to promote themselves as much as possible.

The Giants have the GWS branding in their name, presumably to help them get and grow a support base, I am simply advocating that they make the most of it. And be honest to that branding (which holding a function at Star for instance is most certainly not).

Holding all their presentation nights in the GWS area would be a good way of doing that. And, as part of that, getting out of the Olympic Park cocoon would be a good idea. I reckon they could find a decent function centre or two west of Parra if they really tried.

Problem is, most of them would probably get lost if they had to go to a function west of Parramatta.......:D

Anyway, I know how defensive you lot get when anything negative about your club is said, even when it is well-intentioned, so I will leave it there.

Swans have a large presence in the St George/Sutherland shires. They are often gifting large amounts of free tickets to schools, particularly the schools with a large proportion of kids of non-European descent, of which there are many in those 2 shires.

That's part of the problem, they are supposed to be representing a clearly defined area (as per their name), yet it's beneath them to visit these places unless absolutely necessary.

Could you ever imagine the GWS Giants holding a major club function in Penrith for instance? Most of them wouldn't even know where it is, let alone consider actually going there. :D

Thanks for that.

I have no idea why he even talked about the Swans.......

I tried to make that point earlier in the thread but was howled down by the GWS mafioso.

The problem is the club isn't secure yet, so as a result neither are the supporters. Also, they cop plenty of criticism here on BF, so they have become so defensive as a result that even valid criticism is shot down.

I've been through it myself several years ago, when I dared criticize the decision by the brain surgeons running the Giants to sponsor and lend their name to the Manly senior club here in Sydney.

I strongly support the Giants as a concept and as a club, don't get me wrong, but their approach to promoting themselves has often left me scratching my head. They could certainly be far more true to the "GWS" branding, that's for sure.

So as long as we do our function in Penrith instead of Rose Hill then we dont need all that juniour development and schools efforts?
You seem to leave out all that work put in by the club.

But hey the functions havent been far enough West so naughty club.

Ive been bashing the club over coaching so dont give me that garbage about over protectiveness.
